About the Author

Maureen A. Ryan is a producer based in New York concentrating on feature films and documentaries. She is co-producer of James Marsh’s Man on Wire, a documentary about Philippe Petit, the wire-walker who stunned the world when he walked between the World Trade Center towers in 1974. It won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Documentary and the 2009 BAFTA Award for Best

Other awards include the Sundance Jury Prize for World Cinema documentary and Audience Award for World Cinema documentary, the Critics Choice Award, the IDA Award, the National Board of Review, the NY Film Critics Award, the PGA Award, and the LA Film Critics Award. Their latest documentary Project NIM premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and won Best 
Director of World Cinema Documentary and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary that year. It screened theatrically in the US and UK and premiered on HBO in the winter of 2012. Ryan is Co-Executive Producer of the television pilot Stanistan for USA Network/Universal Cable Productions. She is also the Re-Creations Producer for Johanna Hamilton’s new feature documentary 1971 that premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and is touring the film festival circuit. Her other Re-creations credit is for Alex Gibney’s feature documentary Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God. The film had a US theatrical run, won the Peabody Award, the BFI Grierson Award at the London Film Festival, and was shortlisted for this year’s Academy Award for Best Documentary. It premiered on HBO in February 2013. She is also a producer of the independent narrative film Bomber which premiered at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival, has won numerous film festival awards, and is currently distributed by Film Movement in the US and Distribuzione Indipendente in Italy. Written, directed, and produced by Paul Cotter, it was shot in Brighton, UK and Bad Zwischenahn, Germany. She produced a short film Red Flag that was written and directed by Sheila Curran Dennin. The film won awards at the Palm Springs International Shorts Fest, the Woods Hole Film Festival, and the Taos Shortz Film Festival. Ryan’s other producer credits include The Gates, Grey Gardens: From East Hampton to Broadway, The Team, The King, Torte Bluma, Last Hand Standing, and Wisconsin Death Trip. Additional awards have included a Peabody award, three AICP awards, a Billboard award, a Freddie, a CMA award, an ACM award, 11 Addys, and 5 Tellys. She is the Producing Concentration Supervisor and Associate Professor at Columbia University’s Graduate Film Program. In addition to various U.S. cities, Ryan has taught seminars in Amman, Jordan, Beijing, China, Brussels, Belgium, and Kinshasa, Congo. I'm teaching a documentary pre-production class next spring and plan to use this book. It is effectively detailed and nicely captures the complexities involved in the budgeting process.

Great, but no mention of small commercial shoots or segues into digital advertising, which more and more production companies move into. It'd be great to have a few chapters and budget sheets for that. Not everyone makes "films" as a staple.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in intersectionality and transnational feminisms. Alexander is brilliant. I particularly loved her chapter about her experience at the New School and how 'diversity' initiatives elide the real problem of social justice: "normative whiteness" or "eurocentricism" in so called liberal progressive schools like New School in her opinion.

This book is amazing. A canonical Black feminist text, and a must have for any feminist or Black studies student.

Not since the early 1980s has there been a book that literally takes one's breath away. Prof. Alexander's new volume is profoundly spiritual at the same time it's grounded in a unique materialist feminism. Its signifiance also lies in the book's manifestations of a real hope. Being alive and politically conscious in the first decade of the 21st century is to be easily seduced by despair, it is also to be absolutely at odds with terrible, counter revolutionary, antifeminist cultures. Not for Alexander glib, soggy liberalism but a spirit that is courageous and awe-inspiring. In the book's third section, Alexander writes of 'returning' to the magnificent anthology, 'This Bridge Called My Back' and, following this essay, the book's most thrilling chapter, in which the writer conjures a new life force, one thoroughly rooted in both spiritual and secular lifeworlds. As if this adjectival 'heap' of praise were not enough, Alexander's book render obsolete the common periodization of feminisms by 'wave'. It would not be innacurate to say that 'Pedagogies of Crossing' is a epistemic rupture, demanding its readers to again grapple with feminist legacies from an entirely new standpoint. If you've not heard Prof. Alexander speak, I suggest you do so as soon as possible. The impact of her spoken word 'appearances' powerful. Her lectures constitute an epistemological rupture, filling one with true hope.

I am a graduate student and bought the Kindle version of this book. It is unfortunately a waste of time. I am viewing this books with the Widdows 8 Kindle app and am unable to search within the text of the book. Also, the ''Table of Contents" button is not activated. Did I mention, that there are no page numbers. How on earth am I supposed to make proper citations and navigate through it? My suggestion to Amazon, I am reading a book for research and not chick lit for my amusement. Um... pages numbers, chapter headings, being able to search the text (those minor things that enable you to cite text properly) actually do matter!My suggestion to anyone who is using this book for research: DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE VERSION IF YOU ARE USING THE WINDOWS 8 KINDLE APP!Perhaps, I am not technologically savvy enough! If anyone has suggestions on how I may get my money's worth? Please, let me know.

Not that it will necessarily help you with your class, but it is good form to buy the book of the person who is teaching you something for free. With that in mind, I wanted to rate this higher, and I am probably being a little generous with 4 stars. The book is missing some pieces....The sample problems seem to be an afterthought. They are collected in the last chapter of the book, and none are worked out. There is a PDF for the answers. The answers are overly terse and don't provide complete coverage. There are also too few figures and explanatory drawings. Way too little. I was also disappointed with the xerographic b/w printing. Picky yes, but not so much for an expensive book.On the positive side, this is a very mathematical book and it certainly lives up to its quantitative billing. You will do well to remember your Calc3. Also, this 3rd edition is very logically organized and shows years of mastery teaching the material. I would also give high marks for the passion of the authors and the occasional, but useful, commentary about the novelty of certain systems. It helps increase interest in the material.PS Coursera ClassThe Coursera class is perhaps 1/5 as technical as this book. The class uses math that you would expect a biology student to know, whereas this book is clearly based on engineering mathematics. Being mathematical, I find the book quite understandable, with the math supporting the message. For non-mathematicians, the opposite effect may prevail. In my case, the book is definitely a big help in the course, if only to see the material in a different format and with a different approach. Evidently, there is much more to bioelectricity than what is in the course.

Just go look up the Erratum for this thing. The publisher has known about how error prone this book is and still hasn't reissued or issued a better version. Some of my favorites include page 25 where the author writes the equation R = rho*A/L instead or R = rho*L/A (resistance of a wire, elementary stuff), page 133 where the conductive equivalents wrongfully have potential differences, and the majority of the solution manual to be just plain wrong. Seriously, don't even bother using the dang thing.This book is horribly edited and I implore professors looking to assign this book to look elsewhere unless they want their office hours filled with confused students. It is a scam at $70.

I think this book has the potential to be successful. It's fairly well written with explanations that are usually clear, even to persons with minimal biological background. However, it suffers tremendously from the errors that pervade each chapter. From the trivial errors such as misspellings and significant errors like incorrect formulae, it seems that nobody bothered to proofread this edition of the book (3rd). Derivations also tend to be rather difficult to follow, either due to errors, unclear assumptions, or mislabeled or missing equations. I suspect that much of the book was scanned and edited from the previous edition since there are numerous typos that are substitutions of similar looking letters (e.g. I->l). Even worse, many of the original figures in the book are awfully unclear, confusing the subject rather than clarifying it. In many graphs, axis are missing labels and captions are no more helpful. Many of the figures look like they were drawn in MS Word. All in all, a disappointing textbook, especially for a 3rd edition.

This book is next only to "From Neuron to Brain" to understand Neuroscience Basics. It covers a bunch of other topics other than Neuroscience. Worth a reading!

I first found the author early one morning on PBS. I am 66 years old and was delighted that here were exercises that I could perform without hating every minute. ( I am now not ashamed to say, "I hate yoga".) I am also, like her though not as accomplished, a former dancer but have let myself get out of shape. I have been really impressed with Miranda's program and bought several DVDs which I really like but out of laziness stopped doing. When I heard about her book I felt that it would re-motivate me. How true that is! The book really explains how important - and why - it is to work the muscles. Her program is the best at keeping a person from getting stoop-shouldered and slow and unsteady-gaited, typical of the elderly and the aging. She focuses on range of motion and strength which has the added benefit of developing balance which is completely important in and of itself. This is a really sound program and I think it should be taught and done by everyone, not just those of us who are up in years although for someone of my age who has been starting to see the effects of aging (a little hard to get out of the chair, sometimes hard to straighten up upon standing, etc.) it is absolutely ideal. I don't have a lot of aches and pains but her program is supposed to really help with that, as well.

found the answer i've been looking for. this book covers the answers for my ageing back and joints, The docs said I had arthritis, but I don't think so. I've started to employ some of the stretching that this book speaks of and one of my (5 year old) problems has started to respond nicely to. I plan on getting the DVD's and pursuing it farther.

I'm a lifelong exerciser, now in my 70's, with a strong aerobic and heavy-weight program. This approach has caused me to rethink my entire program. After two weeks, I feel stronger, more agile, more relaxed, better posture, than with my previous program. I still supplement the program with medium hand weights. But after each program, I no longer feel tired; instead I feel totally energized.

This book is like a cross between Pilates, ballet, yoga, physical therapy -- and more!!I studied classical ballet for years as a child, have done all kinds of dance and exercise throughout my life. Fads in exercising come and go! But this is here to stay! Great at any age! I ran across this program on PBS and said, "this is IT!"

I had results within 2 days doing only half of the exercises. A lot of my aches and pains were minimized or gone. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Everyone should read this book especially if they are over age 50 or have suffered chronic pain from any ailments involving muscles and bones. It is inspiring and has changed my attitude from giving up to new found hope. You can stay as young as you want if you will only try.

wonderful reference book. I love Miranda's "Classical Stretch" DVDs. this book shows the details of a lot of the moves and the rationalization behind them.

I was skeptical, but these exercises are really good. They're deceptively easy, but they're very effective in gaining flexibility and easing joint pain. I find it's very workable to do two sets of 10 minutes a day without even noticing.

After watching the movie "Freedom Writers" I became interested in Anne Frank's story--much more so than in high school, when I read "The Diary of Anne Frank." I am even more interested at this point, since I am planning a trip with a friend to Amsterdam (among other places). I definitely want to visit this museum. I downloaded this ebook to get a preview of the museum and was pleasantly surprised at the contents. The ebook not only gives you the rules and policies of the museum, but also the best times to visit to avoid crowds. You also get a virtual tour of the museum so you know what to expect and what to look for when you actually visit. There are helpful resources, such as where to buy tickets online and where to read more online (the museum website). I checked out both and will definitely be using them before attempting to visit the museum. This short ebook packs in all the information a potential visitor needs to maximize a tour of museum. I highly recommend this as a resource for potential visitors, and even a memento for those who have already made the trip!

If you are planning to visit the Anne Frank House, this book is a must read to get you both prepared and inspired for your trip. Filled with information and unknown facts about the property and surrounding area, this book offers insight about not only the property, but also prepares you for the emotions you will likely experience once you arrive. Having never visited, I now feel like I have a vision for the property itself and a little more insight on the life and struggles of Anne Frank. Within these pages you'll find her bibliography in addition to historical information, including how her diary came to be published. An informative read, to say the least.

The Anne Frank House book by Leisbeth Heenk and Marko Kassenaar is a very quick read and has some fascinating information for all who intend to visit there. It warns readers that the visitation will be an emotional experience and it is definitely that. I was there in '98 and I was overwhelmed. Seeing Anne's writings on the wall was incredibly powerful. The book gives a good history of the Frank family and the house they lived in. It also talks about the Chestnut tree that Anne so loved and describes the tree as 'possibly the most famous tree in all of Europe.' I wish I had the book before I went because I'm sure I saw that tree but did not understand its significance. If you are going to visit the site, a book like this helps you prepare properly.

I think this book, albeit very brief, is a great introduction not only to this important museum, and also a great book to read with your kids. The book includes family history, great images, info on the surrounding neighborhood and notes on the historical context. The book reminds us of why Anne Frank is an important figure and an inspiration to us all, even if at the cost of great tragedy.

If you are going to Amsterdam and wish to visit the Anne Frank house, or haven't been there and wish to know about it, this is a book with information about it. It gives a biography of Anne Frank and tells how her diary came to be published and how the house became a museum. There are also pictures and other reference material.

No one can think about, talk about, read about Anne Frank and not feel emotional. What she and her family experienced is a reminder yet again, that war is hell. The author gives us a look inside the Frank house and Anne's room. Anne's story has stood the test of time and the author brings it to life again. Kassenaar inspires us to want to visit Anne Frank's museum.

Although the information in this book was interesting and useful, the overall book was far less extensive than I expected or hoped for. More pictures would also have been appreciated, and would have helped emphasize the points being talked about. Still, what was there was good.

Seemed strange reading someone's diary but it gave a good picture of what the Jewish people endured during this terrible time. Interestingly to note that Anne's inner self was very different from her outward self.

I bought this for our 4½ year old after being blown away by Locomotive, also written by Mr. Floca.Like Locomotive, this book takes the reader on a journey, and explains a lot along the way. Unlike Locomotive, it feels a bit more solitary and uncertain (nail biting, even -- and why shouldn't it be?). With so much build up, there's quite an emotional touchdown on the lunar surface, but unlike Locomotive, that's not the end of the story.Brush up on your space history, and cue up the Apollo videos -- this book is sure to elicit a ton of curious questions from the intended audience.

A very fine picture book for children of all ages of probably the most historic event ever in the history of the world. Published as a fitting tribute on the 40th anniversary of the event. Sadly, Neil Armstrong is no longer with us, but as time goes on, books like this help to keep his memory alive. Neil, Buzz and Michael, are three of the most courageous astronauts of the 20th century, and three of America's national treasurers, if not bonafide heroes. Children the world over should read this book for inspiration of what can be done by exceptionally trained and goal oriented people in the name of all mankind. Highly recommended!I also highly recommend two very educational DVDs covering the Apollo moon missions from the early 60s thru 1973. First, is Ron Howard's theatrical production of "Apollo 13", and second, Tom Hank's HBO mini series (12 episodes), "From the Earth to the Moon". Both are truly outstanding docudramas faithfully based on the events of those particular NASA years leading up landing six different two man crews on the Moon, Apollo 11 being the first. These are all of the Apollo astronauts own true stories, some quite tragic but most very successful, with very realistic reenactments of all the missions.

Absolutely loved it and immediately bought two more copies for my friends as gifts. I love reading this book to my 3-year-old daughter and she loves it as well. The other day I saw her playing with her Disney princesses saying "This one is Eagle, and this is Columbia..." She remembers which seat Buzz Aldrin sat in and basically has the book memorized (as little children are known to do).The book is exceptionally well written. Accessible and easy to understand for children but at the same time surprisingly detailed. The drawings are simply beautiful. I must admit I often get moved to tears just reading it, it really puts you there.My only wish is that the end of the story would be a little more detailed as well, after the landing it seems to be over in a hurry and not much is said about the way back and landing.But this is a 5-star book without hesitation, one that children and parents alike will love and enjoy.

Although it's nonfiction, this book is written like poetry. It's one of my favorites to read aloud, and kids are always mesmerized when I do. It has suspense, drama, and even some humor. The illustrations are both detailed and gorgeous. Both text and images strike a great balance between informative and beautiful. I definitely recommend it to science or history teachers and parents of budding astronauts!

This book is a stunner. It's highly dramatic, fused with tension and excitement throughout, from preparation to liftoff, landing, and finally, the return to Earth. The illustrations are spectacular. It feels as if you're right there on the journey with the astronauts. We also see people across the country holding their breath because, after all, nobody knew for sure these guys would make it. I loved the fact that Floca provides a complete but easy-to-read story, a real page turner, for all readers, but also provides additional technical detail in the afterword for those readers who want more. The writing is excellent, filled with voice, and inviting to both young readers and adults. This book is suitable for all ages, really, from four to a hundred and four. It would make an outstanding gift for anyone interested in space travel or just wanting to know more about that exciting trip to the moon. Highly recommended.

It's fun to read this aloud to pre readers. Our daughter learned to read this book at age 5 after a trip to the Johnson Space Center, and after having it read to her for months. We give it to all of her friends when we go to their birthday parties. One of her friends (just turned 9) has declared her intent to be the first woman on Mars. It's a hit with the little girl crowd.This book is absorbing and appropriate for a wide range of ages because of the carefully chosen /sonically interesting language, beautiful pictures, and more-detailed extra information inside front and back covers which appeals to older children. And parents, for that matter.

This book is a joy for both adults and children. My 5 year old son has been fascinated with space and space travel (I also highly recommend national geographic's big book for little kids on space). But before even reading it too him I found myself poring over the Apollo rocket diagrams, absolutely fascinated. I love that it's very accurate in the details. It allows for wonderful questions and discussions in our house.

At first glance, this book seems “above grade level” for my 3 and 5 year old but they both love it. It’s long, and they sit riveted to the entire story. It has become a family favorite, along with his other book Locomotive. The drawings are great. The words are poetic and even adults will enjoy reading this aloud.

About the Author

Deborah Landau is the author of three collections of poetry: The Uses of the Body and The Last Usable Hour, both Lannan Literary Selections from Copper Canyon Press, and Orchidelirium, selected by Naomi Shihab Nye for the Robert Dana Anhinga Prize for Poetry. In 2016 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. The Uses of the Body was featured on NPR’s All Things Considered, and included on “Best of 2015″ lists by The New Yorker, Vogue, BuzzFeed, and O, The Oprah Magazine, among others. Landau was educated at Stanford University, Columbia University, and Brown University, where she was a Javits Fellow and received a Ph.D. in English and American Literature. She teaches in and directs the Creative Writing Program at New York University, and lives in Brooklyn with her family.
