I read this book when I was homeless and had a community garden. Following the instructions in this book got me laughed at until everyone saw how magnificent my garden was. I eventually went on to teach classes about my experience and was elected to the City Council. Worthwhile read.

I've seen some of the Ruth Stout videos on YouTube and I ADORE her (R.I.P. Ruth). The writing style is very much like her videos would suggest, you can hear her voice in every word. However, on the practical side, the primary thing you will learn from the book is PUT STRAW OR HAY MULCH ON EVERYTHING IN YOUR GARDEN AND YOU WILL HAVE VERY LITTLE WORK TO DO WHILE ENRICHING YOUR SOIL. There, I just saved you some money. It's still rather sweet, I'm just not sure that beyond the primary tip I just revealed, you'll gain much else here that you can't gain from any other source on gardening. Ruth still rocks though!

I noticed a mention of Earl Stanley Gardner in Ruth Stout's book, probably a sly dig at her brother, Rex Stout, whose Nero Wolfe mysteries I adore. Too bad these folks are gone, I would love to write them each a fan letter. To her book -- yes, it's premise is simple, but we folk who were raised on the complexities and mysteries of gardening JUST CAN'T BELIEVE it's that easy. I've started and my only problem is getting enough straw. When I get some down, it looks so pretty! I think if I put down hay, the deer and rabbits would assume it was for them. I'll report back next spring, meanwhile, enjoy the book over the winter!

I wanted to garden, without killing myself, and I got that, and much more from this book. Indeed, the book is not new, however, I know you will find the information in it, as wonderful as I did, and if you want to save your back, knees, sweat, and tears, then purchase the book. It turned out to be so much more than I ever expected. Not just in the reading, but in the doing. For the first time in a long time, I know that I will be able to garden for many years to come, and for those who are young, it will not wear you down like old gardening does. Trust me, I know both, and THIS METHOD IS OUTSTANDING! I intend to grow all of my produce myself, and this is the ONLY way I will be able to do that for so many in my family. I may be old, (64) but I can do it with Ruth's method. She gardened until she was 90 yrs. old! How's that for proof of her method! She was before her time, follow it, you won't be let down.

This book is utterly charming as well as presenting an innovative way of gardening. We've had the best garden ever this year, in part because of ample rain, so I was looking for information to nudge along our success. After trying just a few of her methods, we're looking forward to extending our vegtable garden into the fall. Ruth Stout had gardened for 50 years when she wrote this book and readily admits the failures that are sometimes inevitable. However years of experience with her methods have resulted in usually great crops in her huge vegtable garden and from very little work. Sounds impossible, but no tilling, no plowing, no weeding, no fertilizers or "-cides", and it all makes a lot of sense when you read the book. Her methods also work for flower gardeners. She was a delightful old lady and I cannot wait to read her other books.

I was familiar with the Stout method of gardening. I saw the book and decided to read for myself. The book was as easy to read and as delightful as her gardening practice. I am lazy. This is easy. I had been using her techniques for several years with much success. Now I know why.

Ruth Stout, in her own quiet way, caused a gardening revolution. Her mulch method is now time honored and many books have been published parroting her mulching ideas. Many are good books but I love her honesty and open style. She never claimed to be an expert but was always open to new ideas and shares her failures as openly as her successes.Great read!

These book is like sitting down with an older family member who tells you the easy way to garden and makes you really enjoy gardening without all the work! She swears by using hay but that wasn't feasible for me living in a big Southern city. I ordered over 50 bales of pine straw and threw it about. So far my trees, scrubs and perennial plants are lovin it! Now when I go to put seeds out, I just move the pine straw and toss. The ground is not bone dry but I haven't gotten into our 100 degrees Summer drought season yet.Great read for a Gardener.

5 Tips to Transform Another Person’s Anger Impulse In Outsmarting Anger you’ll be learning how it’s not just your own anger that gets in the way of success, but someone else’s. Add A Thank You To Your Day It sounds so simple. Without even thinking twice we thank the bank teller, the waiter, the teacher, the boss, and they thank us. But think about when someone doesn’t thank you, when those two words don’t appear. It feels pretty strange, almost like we’re invisible, or that our very presence isn’t valued. Someone who doesn’t say thank you is instantly classified as “rude.” That’s how important it is to remember those words. Try adding a few thank yous to your day- even to those you don’t have to thank but who really deserve it like the street cleaner, the intern, and the parking lot attendant. When you value others, it’s like taking a fire hose to feelings of anger. Talk in Line Nothing causes the feeling of common frustration and more than a disorganized line at restaurant or place of service. We have in our evolutionary DNA both the need to get to resources first and an innate sense of fairness. When someone cuts in line, people get angry. If you’re the last to arrive and don’t know where the line is, you will be helping calm everyone’s anger impulse by speaking up to establish where the line is and going to the end of it. You can even make a joke, “Wow, you’d think they’re giving them away today!” As fans of these awesome bagels, you already have a lot in common. Remove Your Shades Those fancy designer sunglasses probably make you feel like the coolest looking person on the planet. They ought to; you spent the big bucks on ‘em. But when you don’t show your eyes to the person with whom you’re interacting, you are sending a very subtle but clear message of disrespect, as if they’re not worthy of your glance. And what’s worse, when a person cannot see your eyes, they can’t gauge your intent or level of sincerity. Consequently, you’ve communicated to them that you are not trustworthy. When you are not trusted, you tend to breed mistrust or suspicion, a perfect kindling for anger. Smile Who are you more likely to want to meet, let alone trust? The person who walks around the office avoiding eye contact and scowling, or the person who walks by you and gives you a warm and respectful smile? Studies show that the person who smiles is perceived by others as calm, happy, and confident – the kind of person most of us are already attracted to. But on a deeper level, they’re also the one who’s least likely to be seen as a threat to your safety. The safer you feel, the less frightened or angry you feel. So when you smile at someone, you’re signaling to them that you are safe and they can relax their suspicion and anger radar around you. Boast Less We live in a society that is always telling us to “toot your own horn” to get ahead. But actually, boasting about a new home, sports car, or raise, is unlikely to win you lasting admiration. When you brag, in fact you’re kick starting a human tendency to feel envy, a close cousin of anger. You run the risk of making others want what you have and resent you for having it instead of them. It’s not their fault. People are just wired this way. But now you know how you can influence others and keep them less angry at you, and less angry in general. Mum’s the word on those Red Sox Box Seats.

Shrand and Devine describe this fascinating emotion comprehensively with great anecdotes in easy to understand language. The title is slightly misleading because the book delivers so much more than anger management. It's really about how to understand and manage urges in general. I recommend for anyone, not just for those with anger management issues.

This book is helpful for those interested in building positive relationships in their lives: at home, at work, and in their communities. I find myself thinking about the concepts even while watching movies, wishing the characters might try to empathize with each other rather than resort to violence. I suppose the action might be less intense!

Dr Shrand is a brilliant psychologist and teaches you how to not only control your own anger but also, recognizing it in others so you can defuse it. He includes his own experiences that most can relate to.

The author gives practical examples of handling anger in a variety of situations. He also explains what goes on in the brain while dealing with them. I have recommended this book to several people already and will continue to do so when school starts next month.

I really enjoyed this book. It breaks down the biology of anger intocomponents and then helps you understand and control it.The writing is top notch. Complex brain discussion easy to understand.Highly recommended.

Enjoyable reading and very good lessons to learn and follow through life. Anger can be outsmarted with the through description of how the brain sees it.

Dr. Shrand is clearly onto something! This is a topic which will be of use to anyone working in the medical field as well as to the reading public. It is very well written.

I highly recommend this book for anyone, even if you don't think you have anger issues. We all have anger issues!
