I got this book as part of the preparation for my Pantanal Escapes online travel guide website ([...]). Despite the fact that I've been to the Pantanal multiple times, and have family there, this book showed me lots that was new. It's not an animal encyclopedia (which would be too big to carry and too boring to read) but instead its a concise description of the animals you're likely to, or hope to, encounter there on your travels. It provides great insights into the wildlife and the environment, and where to find things. Furthermore, it gives the best rundown on travel lodges - and especially those along the transpantaneira - that I've yet seen in print anywhere .., including within Brazil. It also provides some very competent photography advice to travellers who are looking to take home stunning photos of the wildlife they see as a souvenir. I was impressed with this book on my first read and keep going back to it.Of course, if you're a serious bird watcher then I'd also recommend something like the Wildlife Conservation Society Birds of Brazil: The Pantanal and Cerrado of Central Brazil (A Field Guide) which is more detailed and which is designed specifically to help with recognition. I also have David Pearson's Brazil: Amazon And Pantanal (Travellers' Wildlife Guides). While this is also a good book, its more like reading a scientific textbook and is considerably more difficult (and less entertaining) to read, with the result that I learned a lot less from it. The sheer size of that book also makes it much less convenient to take with you.Hence, it you're travelling to the Pantanal, and only want one book then this is the one I recommend. I guarantee it will be the most practical help for planning your trip. The only thing to be aware of is that some lodges described by Lowen have changed hands or no longer operate since the book's publication. The Pantanal Escapes website has some more recent updates as well as links to most of the lodge websites - and there could well be other websites which do the same. Here's hoping there's an update to this book in time for travellers going to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, as an excursion to the Pantanal is well worthwhile.

This guide provides an overview of all things Pantanal -- from birds and mammals to reptiles and insects. The color pictures are good; and the descriptions under each category -- for example, Waterbirds, then Herons -- give you an idea of what you might see while there. Knowing that there were three particularly beautiful herons, I asked our guides to help me find and/or identify the "beauty queens:" the capped, the whistling and, especially, the agami herons. I was lucky to see all three, and they are of almost unbelievable beauty. Is it a Bird Guide? No. There was, for example, only the picture of the Agami Heron. To distinguish between the various heron or any other category of birds a proper Guide is needed. A particularly good one, aimed at the region, is the Wildlife Conservation Society's Birds of Brazil: the Pantanal & Cerrado of Central Brazil.Returning from the trip, my travel companions wanted to look at the book. Several planned to buy it for the overview of everything we'd seen.

We actually bought this book after our trip to the Pantanal. I really thought the book was right on in many ways. As I was reading the book, it was like reliving our experiences that we just had a month ago in June 2017. Depictions of the animals were nearly perfect, and the listings of attractions, POIs and other man-made stops was very accurate. I just wish I had bought the book before we had left on the trip!!!!

Excellent primer--well-worth the price, especially for a first-time visitor. I found it most helpful for my first time Patanal visit, including helping to identify many species of birds and animals. It is not meant to be a comprehensive deskbook, but a guide to have with you "on the road".

This book is a treat to read as it provides information about the wildlife on might well see in different locations within the Pantanal at at specific eco inns and ranches. The descriptions of different genera/species are concise and useful for broad brush field identifications.

Nice review of the Pantanal itself as well as the wildlife found there. Used it on a recent trip and it was quite helpful.

Useful guide to mammals, birds, and other wildlife. Especially good on the mammals. I liked the breakout on habitats.

Loved all the information this book provided on the various wildlife of the Pantanal. And the photos in the book were amazing. Would recommend this book to anyone who plans to visit this area.

Just got the book today. Haven’t read much but saw that Det. Sharon Hinesburg (who died in Deadly Heat) is in this book (pg. 32). Doesn’t seem like the kind of mistake Tom Straw (who wrote the first 9 Richard Castle books) would make.

Wasn't going to read this book after the same flawed story line destroyed a very popular TV show and then the last two books. Geez, what arrogance in the powers that be! But, I hoped they would try to give us back the great story line of two people deeply in love fighting crime. Well, after a huge continuity issue with a dead major character in a previous book and a quick remark by Heat to justify her horrendous behavior of the last two books, the story settled into what we came to expect in our two main characters. Not a difficult plot, but definitely fun to read. Not sure how this book will sell after The disastrous Heat\Storm fiasco, but I hope many of you give this a chance and a book 11 can be written without any remarks about the train wreck of books 8 and 9 and give us a well written book 11 with Heat\Rook romance and crime solving.

Whoever used to ghost write these stories isn’t doing it anymore. This was terrible. The characters used to be real people, but the writer has turned them into something from a bodice ripper romance novel. Sad that I wasted my money on it.

Bought this book not knowing what to expect. It's my first Nikki Heat book ever. It was so engaging I couldn't put it down. Read it over a very busy weekend - a real page turner! I loved the backstory on the characters, since this was my first book on this character. I loved the story line! What I really enjoy in a book is how the details put me in the story! This book did just that! I will be ordering more books in this series! Loved it!

This book showed us what could have happened if they would have let Castle & Beckett have a nice wedding and then continued to solve murders together. Fun banter, nice use of the writers knowledge helping to solve the murder. If only...

From page one to the last word, Richard Castle has given the reader an outstanding non stop, keep turning the page journey follow James Rook and Nikki Head through a complex story from New York City to up state to new York to solve murder with James Rook as the key suspect. Keep these great adventures coming !!!

This was a great installment of the “Heat” series, based on the TV series “Castle.” Spell binding story and fascinating characters.

There's nothing critically-acclaimed about the writing by "Richard Castle", but it's light, easy prose that makes one miss Castle.

This was such an odd book. I started it a few months ago and had to put it aside as it simply didn’t engage me. Then, having finished another of Atkinson's books (When Will There Be Good News) and not wanting to move away from her writing, I picked this one up again, started from the beginning once more, and couldn't put it down.Ostensibly the story of Isobel Fairfax, a young British woman who at an early age, along with her unattractive younger brother, Charles, "loses" her mother. Unlike Charles, Isobel appears to have the ability to slip through time, back to the Elizabethan period, and thus her life becomes this peculiar negotiation of time, space and people. Though the novel has this magic realist/mystical element it’s also a coming-of-age-story, a tale of familial and suburban dysfunction, murder, disappearances, secrets and lies, and an exploration of the ties that bind and tear us apart. The novel takes the reader on a remarkable journey through Isobel's childhood, adolescence and that of her parents and forebears, exposing warts, flaws, mistakes, triumphs and tragedies.Capturing the essence of the 1960s as well as war-time London, the characteristics of class, neighborhoods and the passion and heartbreak of relationships of all kind, this pseudo and quite dark fairy-tale is remarkable. Moving, haunting, at times funny, always strange and yet familiar, the novel shifts points of view from first to third person and a cocky omniscient narrator who through Isobel also functions like a Greek chorus, or a Shakespearian player setting the scene and passing commentary upon what unfolds. The book plays with reader expectations, genre, the notion of secrets, and in doing so examines the minutiae of the everyday, and explores the adult world from a child's point of view and vice versa. All the world and time is Atkinson's stage, and this is certainly an ambitious and clever novel that offers alternative readings of not only scenes, but characters' interpretations of events. What the reader accepts is up to her or him, but nothing is predictable. The prose is simply lovely and some of the ideas expressed are timeless and erudite and have you reaching for a highlighter in order to recall them. This story won't appeal to everyone, and it’s very different in so many ways from Atkinson’s other books, but if you cast aside expectations and go for the ride, it's one you won't forget in a hurry.

After reading my third Kate Atkinson book (her second), it’s now official – Kate Atkinson is my new favorite author. These stories are so rich, so bizarre, so unique, so sad, and yet so hilarious. I found myself wanting to have a pencil and paper handy to jot down many of the humorous quips that seem to flow so effortlessly from her pen. Maybe next time. There are many similar elements between this book and her first, Scenes From a Museum. The story is undoubtedly “British”, features a multitude of characters, is told across multiple generations, and is not a particularly happy read. Actually, the story is a joy, it’s just the predicaments the characters are in are less than ideal. The story revolves around Isobel. She’s about seventeen, rather unattractive, and living sometime in the late 1950s. She lives with her brother Charles and her father Gordon in a house owned by Gordon’s mom, known mainly as “the widow”. Of course, by the time we’re introduced to these characters, “the widow” as already died. But, there are couple of other relatives in the house along with a border who is some sort of traveling salesman. Note there is no Mom. It seems Mom left the family many years ago when Isobel and Charles were very young. There is a step mother, however. Not that this really matters to the kids. Isobel doesn’t have too happy of an existence. The bulk of this story revolves around Isobel’s yearning for her mother. Who was she? Where is she now? Why did she leave us? Most of the grownups don’t care to talk about her mother. Her name is/was Eliza. What author Kate Atkinson does so well in her books, is she moves around in time so we know more of the “whole story”. We’re taken back to when Eliza and Gordon were married and “the widow” was still alive. It is often said that young marrieds shouldn’t live in their mother/mother-in-law’s house. This story is a perfect illustration as to why. So we see the young family along with all the trials and tribulations. We see how/why Eliza left. We’re not surprised. After Eliza leaves, Gordon (the dad) leaves as well. I won’t go into why, nor how, but it seems he might be gone for good as well. So young Isobel and Charles now live with “the widow” and their morbid Aunt Ginny. Talk about a miserable existence. This was the one area of the book where the humor, unfortunately, didn’t quite cover the sadness I was feeling for the children.“The widow” and Aunt Ginny aren’t fun people to be around. I remember one exchange:Eliza: Why don’t we ever have fun in this family?Ginny: “Fun” don’t get the wash done! The family in this story are actual descendants from a clan known as “The Fairfax” family. Author Kate Atkinson begins the book telling the long, sordid history of this clan from centuries ago. It seems as though this family is rather cursed. Not surprisingly, by the time we meet the modern day characters, the curse has not been lifted by any means.I only mention this because there are parts of the book where Isobel experiences strange, out-of-body, and time-travel episodes. They’re small, brief interludes, and we’re inclined to ask “Were these real? Or is Isobel losing her marbles?” There are even episodes where Isobel lives the same day over and over again a few times – each radically different, but each with less than desirable outcomes. Ultimately, the story is so well told that you don’t really care whether these events are real (i.e. existing in some parallel universe) or the result of a bizarre hallucination. I can see where many authors might seriously bumble episodes such as this, yet with Atkinson, everything runs very smoothly, and the fact that these events may or may not have happened is mostly irrelevant. On a final note, there actually is a game called Human Croquet. It’s mostly played like the standard game, only using humans instead of balls that are whacked through hoops, run into each other, and cause destinies to be unfurled in ways unexpected. This book, nor this author, is for everyone, but I imagine many, like myself, would simply love this story.

Because I am a huge fan of Kate Atkinson I decided to read some of her very early work. It was disappointing, especially in comparison with her excellent recent novels. The language was forced for the young characters and the story was sort of hidden beneath it. It shows an interest in time distortion which will come to full fruition in "Life After Life", but it really didn't hold my attention.

Set in the 1960's in the town of Lythe in England, the tale focuses around a girl, Isobel, at the time of her 16th birthday. However, the story travels throughout history at this location, venturing back and forth as pieces of the puzzle of Isobel's past are unveiled. Isobel has found that she slips in time, seeing past events that are all somehow connected to her life. Her mother left their family while she was young, and as we find out, their father abandoned Isobel and her brother Charlie not long after, leaving them in the care of his mother and sister, until finally returning with a new wife. It is clear that the Fairfax family is in decline, and a history shows how they have fallen over time. It is clear that in addition to her family, some of her neighbors also have dark secrets. The truths once discovered are ugly and at times sad, and are mixed with Isobel maturing into a young lady along with some of the conventional horrors of the teenage years, particularly when she relives a particularly traumatic day, each time with a different ending. This book crosses genres, with elements of science fiction (time travel), mystery/suspense, history, and a coming of age story. There is also an underlying theme of Shakespeare and the Forest of Arden. This was an unusual and complex tale with an intriguing approach to storytelling.

Amazon.com Review

In her first book, respected digerati opinion-maker Esther Dyson looks at computing and the Internet and how they will profoundly change our business and social lives in a fully wired world. The wisdom of Dyson's view is that, while the digital age will be vastly different from the one we know, it will be governed by the same forces that have always shaped social organizations. She has given lots of thought to how those forces will interact with specific new technologies and does a convincing job of predicting the shape of things to come in considerable detail. Dyson is the founder of the influential PC Forum conference and her company Edventure Holdings publishes the respected Release 1.0 newsletter, from which her book adapts its title. She is also chairman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a lobbyist organization that seeks to present a pro-Internet voice in Washington.

From Library Journal

One of only two women included in Vanity Fair's October "new establishment" roundup of the top 50 information age leaders and best known as writer/editor of the 15-year-old computer insiders' newsletter, Release 1.0, Dyson seems well credentialed to explain the importance, current and future, of net culture to the average citizen. Indeed, she delivers a readable analysis of such issues as the impact of the net on our education system, the ups and downs of privacy in digital environments, and the best strategies for governing amorphous international communities. The problem is that, though written in an engaging style, this is a serious study of many complex issues, and Dyson doesn't always resolve them easily. (Librarians may be disappointed at the short shrift they are given in the chapters on "Intellectual Property" and "Content Control.") Netizens will be fascinated, and those of us professionally affected by the net should read this book, but it will have trouble achieving the international best seller status that some expected.?Eric Bryant, "Library Journal"Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

She is neither visionary nor intellectually equipped to deal with the tech revolution, merely privileged. Privileged to have been born into a place and time with the right genetic lottery ticket (save for being female, but white, upper middle class, Swiss) to leverage her privilege into her Wizard of Oz "Digital Doyenne" moniker. She's *not* an innovator or entrepreneur; she's an investor. But even on the level of investing she's a hack, having arrived at her position via -- here's that word again -- privilege, and not insight or acumen. As proof, listen to her expound on technology and listen to, say, Vinod Khosla or John Doerr. The difference is striking; it's like listening to Hendrix and then some kid at Guitar Center aping Hendrix. The kid may have chops, but you get the feeling it's all been thought, felt, seen... before, and done in a MUCH more thoughtful, invigorating and *original* way.Esther Dyson's appeal is to those who don't know better, much like everyday people sucked into mortgage backed securities via sub-prime loans. She rings hollow, but in some ways is the *perfect* "Doyenne" for our times; privileged and falsely sophisticated. Think: Alan Greenspan, Robert Rubin, Larry Summers, Ben Bernanke, Paul Krugman, Tim Geithner, Jamie Dimon, LLoyd Blankfein, Sandy Weill, Hank Paulson....

Mark Kelly states: "Unlike that silly Negroponte" but I had the opposite reaction. I read both books, one after the other, and the contrast was startling. Whereas Negroponte ("Being Digital") writes and thinks 20-30 years in the future, Dyson is plodding along in a plebian present, unaware of a good deal of the reality around her. Whereas Negroponte tells us what we might expect with many startlingly-original speculations, Dyson seems intent on explaining the present at a fifth-grade level - and her analysis is often so far off-base it's amusing. She spends a good deal of the book telling us how smart and special she is, being the spawn of two world-class scientists. She prattles on about her investments, her apartment, her desk, her travels - as if we care. In fact, her brother's book ("Darwin Among The Machines," George Dyson, 1997) is 100 times more insightful without all the puffery. Of course everything her father Freeman has written is as modest and intelligent as she is self-important and dull. I kept getting the feeling, as I was laboring through her assembled platitudes, that she was jealous of her brother's and her father's authorial successes, and decided "to write a book herself." Trouble is, she doesn't have anything to say - and it shows.

Because I'm in the industry of know OF Esther Dyson, and have ocassionally read her stuff in the computer press. To be honest I bought this book expecting more, and found it disappointing. What I found was a columnist making her living. We learnt about her network building, her "names" and could see how she developed those into an income stream of words covering the last 10 years of the Internet. On the other hand I thought her discussion of "communities" was thoughtful. It made me stop and think about relationships and contributing. In my opinion there's little in this book for thoughtful people who are already in the IT industry. But perhaps for people who are looking for a "humanist" view of the Internet and don't know where to start, this book would be quite useful. I was thinking here of an Adult Education class or night class. The jargon might be a bit tough in places, but with a guide this book might suit that audience.

An old Subgenius adage goes "You'll pay to hear what you already know!" So Dyson apparently decided she could write the /best/ book ever by writing things /everyone/ knows. "Email will change business communication'? Oh my God, Esther, thanks for the news flash! What's next for Release 4.0? A timely pensée on how one day we will all own VCRs (that stands for "video-cassette recorder"!), and how this will change everything, /everything/?How about this wild futuristic scenario: in the future, you (YOU!) will be able to make a book by just buying a microcassette recorder and some blank tape, taking it home and taping your unorganized frappucino-addled ramblings. You'll mail the tapes to a typing service, and have them send the MSWord documents /right/ to the printers. What about editors? In the future, everything is fast, no time for editing! Have the publisher bankroll the printing of a few hundred thousand, and wham! "Just-in-time" publishing! The question is, just in time for what?

I tried hard to appreciate Esther Dyson's book Release 2.0: A Design for Living in the Digital Age, but failed. Briefly stated, the problem for me is that the topics she deals with, while important, are presented in a rather bloodless, chatty techno-speak, that either states the obvious or leaves the reader wondering what she is talking about. I kept going, hoping to discover what the buzz was about this book but only succeeded in achieving that brain dead state one can reach after hours of reading business memos and reports. I didn't find it informative, provocative, helpful, or clear. Certainly not fun. There are better, less self-centered, books about the implications of living in a digital age. Dysons 'Design' reads like it was formulated by committee. I wouldn't want to base my life on it.
