About the Author

Michael S. Broder, MD, MSHS, is board-certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, where he serves on the Council to Advance Human Health, and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He has published more than 50 articles in scientific journals including JAMA, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Human Reproduction, Fertility & Sterility, Contemporary Ob-Gyn, and the Journal of Reproductive medicine. Dr. Broder is the author of two books and multiple book chapters. Dr. Broder graduated cum laude from Harvard University before attending medical school at Case Western Reserve University. He completed his Ob-Gyn residency at UCLA and subsequently joined the faculty of both the UCLA School of Medicine and the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA.Â

I was looking forward to this book because I tend to worry about everything... and pregnancy is such an emotional time that I needed all the help I could get! But overall I found the advice in this book to be the typical 'white rice is the same as brown rice' stuff. Sure there was some good, practical wisdom offered that basically shut down the old wives tales, but then there were other things that I just flat out disagreed with.For example, on one of the pages there's a side bar that talks about improving your odds of getting pregnant and the author states, 'Don't worry about your poor diet or how many lattes you drink.' Really?!? Don't worry about your poor diet?! You're trying to grow another human being! WHY would diet not play a role in helping you conceive? Sure, super unhealthy people get pregnant all the time, but that's not to say you shouldn't make an effort to make your 'baby house' as clean and healthy as possible. It will only help! When your body has all that proper nutrients it needs it can function more efficiently, fight off illnesses, better build and repair itself, and ensure your baby will get all the proper nutrients it needs to be strong and healthy. Not to mention during the first trimester you will probably be eating saltines and ginger-ale and just trying to survive the nausea. Better to start off on a healthy foot when you can!The author also doesn't advocate prenatal vitamins... He says that if you're eating healthy you won't need one. Ok, sure, but in this day in age when we are bombarded with stress, lack of sleep, hectic schedules, and nutrient depleted food, a prenatal can only help! Not to mention the importance of building up enough folic acid and other important vitamins BEFORE you get pregnant. My Dr. told me to take a prenatal at least 3 months before trying to make sure I had enough reserved for when I got pregnant. Plus my first trimester was tough... I had almost no appetite and was vomiting. My prenatal helped make sure I wasn't deficient. I certainly think there are crappy prenatals out there, but a good, organic, whole food vitamin will help ensure you and your baby are getting everything you need.Overall I'm not a huge fan this book, but I do think some of his advice is helpful. If trying to conceive I strongly recommend the book, "Taking Charge of Your Fertility," which basically talks about the importance of nutrition and how to dramatically increase your chances of conceiving naturally by recognizing your body's natural fertility signs.

My wife is anxious. About everything. A while back, I got her a copy of Cockpit Confidential, which is a book written by a pilot which (I gather) is about all of the facts and myths of commercial air travel. It really helped to ease my wife's anxiety every time she gets on a plane. Reading about the reality of the situation--the actual numbers and stories and explanations and redundancy--totally reassured her and eliminated all of those irrational fears that an anxious person has.This book did the same thing, but for pregnancy. I wish I had bought it sooner than the 2nd trimester. While she wasn't overly anxious or panicked at all, I knew she had some concerns. She didn't know what advice to take, what risks to worry about, or what horror stories to believe. Over the course of one evening, we laid on the couch, and I read her excerpts from this book. Just jumped around to different topics that seemed relevant or interesting. It's not the kind of thing I think you need to read cover to cover. But we both came away from it feeling like we knew a lot more about the reality of pregnancy and childbirth. It confirmed a lot of my suspicions--that a lot of the advice that you hear these days is overly cautious, and that the risks in most cases are minuscule and not worth worrying over.One big takeaway was from several sections about food-borne illnesses. The bottom line in nearly all cases is that the mother should try not to get sick herself, but that she doesn't have to change her whole diet to do so. If she eats something, and it makes her sick, that's probably not going to be good for her or the baby (but even then most illnesses are minor and do not affect the fetus). But she's not more likely to get listeria or parasites or anything else just because she's pregnant. Sushi isn't going to make the baby sick by its nature alone. So if she wants to eat some sushi, she might get sick from bad sushi (or anything else) just like I might. But the risk of the mother getting something so bad that it would endanger the baby is just tiny. So have some sushi if you want it. Or a beer or two. Or whatever. And don't worry about it. Except for cold cuts and cigarettes, of course. Take care of yourself and your baby will be fine. There's nothing to freak out about.It also had good chapters about childbirth (cesarean vs vaginal, different medications, etc.), vitamins and supplements, and more. There's something in it for everyone. I enjoyed the book, and I absolutely appreciate the calming effect that it had on my anxious, pregnant partner.

I like the advice in this book, but it can be summed up easily. Here it goes:Outside of prescription drugs and illegal drugs pretty much everything else is fine in moderation.Yeah, that's the whole message. I actually preferred Emily Oster's Expecting Better - which has largely the same message but is super data driven if you want to dive in for that. Obviously this book is older and if you don't care about the stats it would be a good place to get a reasonable perspective on how crazy the advice can be for expecting mothers.

Finally, a book that offers women some balance in terms of what is safe and what isn't during pregnancy!! Dr. Broder does an exceptional job of setting the pregnant woman's mind at ease. So many women (myself included!) are a bit frightful about harming their tiny humans before birth that they become preoccupied with every tiny risk, no matter how small. This can be exhausting, overwhelming and stressful for an expectant mother and that can't be good for baby! From eating sushi or drinking 8 glasses of water per day, this guy answers all of the most asked questions and gives answers based on medical fact and research. I also enjoyed the latter part of the book, which discusses a variety of medical interventions most often used in the United States, such as pain relief choices during labor, and cesarean section births. I love the approach the author uses, which describes the risks and benefits of these procedures, which can be especially helpful to parents hoping to make the best choices possible for their little ones. I highly recommend.
