I am quoting from this book on a regular basis. It's been instrumental to illustrate and help me make my case.

I liked very much this book. Caper Jones is one of my best authors. Everyone worried about software quality should read it.

In this book, authors Capers Jones and Olivier Bonsignour quantify the factors that influence software quality and provide information for people to gain insight into how their projects might compare to others. The measurements in this book are based on thousands of software projects. One of my frequent complaints about the software industry is that we just don't measure very many things. However, thankfully there are people like Jones and Bonsignour that do have a rich source of metrics from enough projects that we can learn from them.Capers Jones has long been considered the source for software quality metrics. To me, Capers is the "numbers guy" of our profession. With over 40 years in the field, Jones has a wealth of information he has maintained and published over many years.Olivier Bonsignour is responsible for Research & Development and Product Management in a continual effort to build the world's most advanced Application Intelligence technology. Prior to joining CAST, Mr. Bonsignour was the CIO for DGA, the advanced research division of the French Ministry of Defense. For example, the authors state that "high quality levels are invariable associated with shorter-than-average development schedules and lower-than-average development costs." This finding is based on over 13,000 projects between 1973 and today. The authors maintain that the real economic value of high quality software is not the cost to fix defects, but rather: * the reduced likelihood of canceled projects * the reduced risk of litigation * shortened development schedules * lower development costs * reduced warranty costs * increased customer satisfactionThis book addresses: * What is software quality and how do we define its value? * How can we estimate and measure software quality? * How can software defects be prevented? * How can we find and remove defects before testing? * What are effective ways to test software and measure its effectiveness? * What is the current state of post-delivery software defects? * How do projects of various characteristics (low, average and high-quality) compare? * How can technical debt be addressed from a business value perspective? You will find a multitude of data from projects in a variety of industries, at various levels of quality, and at various levels of practice maturity. You will see by the numbers which project approaches work and which ones don't work very well.By reading this book, you will gain insight not only into the current state of software quality, but you will also learn about measurement and metrics of software. These are critical things for any software quality professional to learn. In fact, after reading this book, you will know more about software measurement than 95% (that's my estimate) of testers and QA professionals.I highly recommend this book, not only as a guide for software quality efforts, but also a benchmark for your own efforts.

Capers Jones and Olivier Bonsignour have authored a very useful book that will help the software industry make more objective decisions and improve the economic outcomes of software delivery organizations. This book is loaded with data, benchmarks and cause-and-effect relationships for reasoning about how to improve software quality. It is not an easy read because it goes both deep and broad across the diverse contexts of software domains and across the life-cycle practices of software development. This book is a great place to start when looking for credible and objective benchmark data to build a business case or defend a proposal for improving software quality or productivity. The economics of software quality is an attractive topic all by itself. However, the book delivers unexpected value on two other fronts. First, the presentation and discussion of substantial data provides an educational framework for quantitative reasoning with enlightening discussions on cause and effect as well as cautions on potential misinterpretation. Second, the well-integrated history lessons throughout give the reader a good feel for the improvement trends, or lack of improvement trends, across the software industry.Decades of experience, compiled into an encyclopedia of facts and figures. Well worth the price.

This book is a a precious and amazing piece of work. It includes hundreds of statistics and real world metrics, organized by project type, project size, technology, methodology, etc...Statistics range from defect density to common quality tools and processes defect removal efficiency.I do not know any source of information that come even close to this one.Precious corpus for anybody dealing with Software quality and outsourcing contracts. And a great book for anybody dealing with software in general !Expected all my expectations on the subject...

On of the better books explaining the facts behind the quantitative part of qa. it really gets to the why we are doing what we are doing.highly recommended.

Some off the material is different than previous works, but having so much data is amazingly helpful.

About the Author

STREETWISE® is the first map to be designed with modern graphics and is the originator of the laminated, accordion-fold map format. We ve set the standard that every map company has imitated but never duplicated. Our mission is to make you feel comfortable, to make you feel safe in a place where you ve never been before and to enable you to experience a familiar place more fully. The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Brown, who had been in international publishing for many years, setting up subsidiaries for textbook publishers. In the 1970 s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving. After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain. He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. More titles were added, each title requiring months of research and design.Today, STREETWISE® produces over 130 titles for major destinations, regions and countries throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom and Asia. We have grown from the back of a motorcycle to selling millions of maps around the world.Yet each title is still painstakingly researched and updated. STREETWISE® is one of the only, if not THE only map company that conducts research by walking or driving an area to ensure accuracy. After all, what good is the map if what you hold in your hands doesn t match what you see on the street sign? This lengthy fact checking results in superior accuracy; in effect, we ve done the work, now you have the adventure. In the end, it s not about the map, it s about getting out and finding your own authentic experience wherever you go. It s about being in a city or a region and discovering things that you never thought you would find. You can do this if you have confidence and you have confidence if you have a great map. STREETWISE® is the great map that you need.

Much of the map is taken up with a list of streets, in type that is too small to read. We spent 5 days in Madrid, and the best map was the one from the pocket guide to Madrid by Lonely Planet. A close second is the free map available from all the hotels.

This map appears to be of good quality (durable), very good detail but still easy to read, includes the Metro lines and lists virtually all of the Madrid tourist attractions I found in the travel books (Fodors, Frommer, etc.). The map is considerably wider than it is tall. The dimensions are about 27 in. wide and about 8 in. tall. The northern half of the city is shown on on one side of the map and the southern half is shown on the other side.My only complaint is that, when switching from the north to the south or (south to north) sides, you can't just flip the map over vertically to find that continuing street. Instead you have to flip the map the long way (flip end to end instead of top to bottom). This may not seem like a big deal, but, for me at least, I find I am constantly flipping the map the wrong way and working a bit harder to find the street I was looking for.Interestingly, I also purchased a Streetwise map of Barcelona. The Barcelona map flips the logical way.

Wow -- the level of detail this map shows was a life-saver. I stayed in Madrid for ~ 1 week and was walking everywhere - no car. My AirBNB stay-over was on a tiny street that would not have been shown on most other maps. This was also useful for an overview of the rail system (does not show all the stops, but enough to find main intersections and stations). This map is compact enough that I could fit it inside a small purse, and it's very light as well.

The free maps distributed at every hotel were much better and easier to read unless (1) you wanted to see Metro routes superimposed on the map and (2) you were planning to visit the norther parts of the city, e.g., Salmanaca. I found the type way too small.

On the plus side this map is small and easier to carry and thick material so it may be longer lasting. On the minus side, the graphics are smaller and what you're looking for will likely be harder to find.

Another excellent Streetwise map. The Madrid map was invaluable when I was in Spain. Tough and laminated, the map is definitely up to the rigors of travel. Even with Google maps on my phone, I always carried this streetwise map around town with me. It's convenient, easy to read, easy to navigate, and rugged.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this map. It seems that it will be very durable. Size is too large to fit in a back pocket, however I think the maps would be too hard to read if they were any smaller. It will fit easily in my purse.

I've used Streetwise maps in Rome, Barcelona and Madrid. They are so helpful whether you're walking or taking the the metro! A must if you don't have language or gps to fall back on.

Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist, by Kate Raworth

Review

“I read this book with the excitement that the people of his day must have read John Maynard Keynes’s General Theory. It is brilliant, thrilling, and revolutionary. Drawing on a deep well of learning, wisdom, and deep thinking, Kate Raworth has comprehensively reframed and redrawn economics. It is entirely accessible, even for people with no knowledge of the subject. I believe that Doughnut Economics will change the world.”―George Monbiot, author; columnist at The Guardian“Raworth’s magnum opus. . . . A fascinating reminder to business leaders and economists alike to stand back at a distance to examine our modern economics."―Forbes, “Best Business Books of 2017”“An admirable attempt to broaden the horizons of economic thinking.”―Financial Times, Martin Wolf, “Best Books of 2017: Economics” “This is truly the book we’ve all been waiting for. Kate Raworth provides the antidote to neoliberal economics with her radical and ambitious vision of an economy in service to life. Given the current state of the world, we need Doughnut Economics now more than ever.”―L. Hunter Lovins, president and founder, Natural Capitalism Solutions“[A] sharp, insightful call for a shift in thinking . . . Raworth’s energetic, layperson-friendly writing makes her concept accessible as well as intriguing.”―Publishers Weekly“Can anyone seriously suppose that today’s economic orthodoxies are going to bring the world back from the brink of chaos? We need to fundamentally rethink the way we create and distribute wealth, and Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics provides an inspiring primer as to how we must now set about that challenge. I hope it ushers in a period of intense debate about the kind of economy we now so urgently need.”―Jonathon Porritt, author of The World We Made; founding director, Forum for the Future“What if it were possible to live well without trashing the planet? Doughnut Economics succinctly captures this tantalising possibility and takes up its challenge. Brimming with creativity, Raworth reclaims economics from the dust of academia and puts it to the service of a better world.”―Tim Jackson, author of Prosperity without Growth“Not long ago, well-known development economist Kate Raworth’s Doughnut graphic became an overnight sensation. Now this marvelous book clearly and succinctly explains her re-envisioning of the economy. On a bookshelf crowded with attempts to reframe economic thinking and the way forward, this book stands out―brilliantly.”―Juliet Schor, author of Plentitude“Economics rightly is under the microscope. Kate Raworth’s insightful Doughnut is what every budding economist should see when they first peer down the lens.” ―John Fullerton, founder and president, Capital Institute

This is an incredible book, but what is most incredible of all is that after ten months of availability it currently ranks 40k+ in Amazon’s sales ranking and has only 40 reviews. That still puts it in the top tier of books, mind you, but this book should be in a tier by itself. It is truly transformative. (I only discovered it due to a comment written in response to the review of another book.)Kate Raworth, who trained in economics at Oxford, has never quite felt comfortable in her chosen field of study. And for good reason. The neoliberal economic model that has guided us for the last three or four decades, based on fundamental assumptions that pre-date us all by several generations, are not so much flawed as they are misaligned, to the point of actual destruction, to the social, economic, political, and environmental world in which we live the 21st Century. As an economics major myself back in the 1970s, and a corporate warrior who lived, breathed, and trusted the neoliberal creed for four subsequent decades, I am both an unlikely and uber-supporter of Raworth’s perspective and ideas. The markets and the consumer are decidedly not efficient; as every leading economist has assumed but every businessperson knows is bullocks. If they were, strategic planning would be a lot more straightforward and companies would be a lot more consistently successful. Companies would not have to constantly reinvent themselves, the turnaround experts and bankruptcy attorneys would have little to do, and investors could take long holidays on the private islands they could easily afford. The resources we rely on are not unlimited. Why are we arguing about the science of climate change? Look around, and if you still don’t see it, sit down and take an inventory of the resources you personally consume and plot it against whatever happiness index you like. The imbalance, you will quickly conclude, is absurd.I lived as an ex-patriate industrialist in a part of the world where you could not drink the water or, on many days, breathe the air. On both counts I am being quite literal. And I can tell you that on both counts nothing else matters. Now back in the US Midwest I can tell you both that I continue to pay the price and that our collective attitude here in the developed world toward these issues is conscious but dismissive. In short, we have been spared true understanding in the same way the blind are spared having to look at the ubiquitous “comparative selfie” that seems to be the single most transformative accomplishment of social media at the moment. We do not assign value to the economic inputs and the assets that really matter. There is no place on the balance sheet for engagement or innovation, and nowhere is there an accounting for shared (what Raworth calls common) assets, like safety, education, infrastructure, the country’s defenses, etc. We’re measuring well-being by the quality of the creases in our trousers.I could go on, but there is no need. Raworth has already completed that task. Which is why this book should be required reading for every adolescent in every corner of the world. The universe is interconnected in ways that we have known, but largely ignored, since the beginning of time. We see the world in a linear framework that reflects and reinforces our deductive worldview in which logic and reason progress from left to right and down to up. Our top is where our smarts reside. Our backs contain the backbone that carries the weight of our ever-extending bellies (mine at least).Nowhere in economics has this been more obvious or more damaging to our long-term interests than our pre-occupation with economic growth. It’s not an assumption, really. It’s a necessity. As we’re reminded daily, we need economic growth to keep people employed and wages rising. Without new air going in each and every moment, the balloon deflates. Doesn’t that mean, however, that at some point the balloon reaches its innate capacity and ultimately bursts?Raworth’s perspective is spot on and the writing is excellent. She has an obvious knack of distilling what may at first seem complex down to the simple and straightforward without losing anything in the translation.I think of the debate in more personal terms. We currently see our world through a very individual-centric lens. In economics, as Raworth covers here, the macro exists to serve the micro. In politics we are motivated by individual rights and freedoms. In medicine we focus on individual health and well-being. Even in psychology we are absorbed with personal happiness and personal measures of purpose and contentment. The result is that our political, social, economic, and even religious spheres of influence operate in independent isolation. And that was okay in the past since there were far fewer of us, resources were in abundance, and we lived and acquired information and knowledge in a largely local ecosystem. But technology, population growth, and constant advances in science have changed all that. Those spheres are now completely inter-connected. Social media drives politics. Politics drives social identity. Economics drives social injustice. The need for security impinges religious freedom.Raworth’s donut is the perfect visual analogy for the need to think less in terms of absolutes and more in terms of balance. I also think of it in terms of balancing the deductive Western worldview with the more inductive Eastern worldview. Most importantly, we must learn to think in terms of “we” rather than “I.”All of our systems of influence, from the political to the economic, must be transformed to promote collective balance rather than individual hegemony. In the last sections of the book, Raworth addresses the question of the era: Can the plane of economic growth, as we currently define it, continue to soar ever upward; must it level out, and if so how do we fulfill our economic expectations; or is it time to land and make do?As with the rest of the book Raworth does the conundrum justice and lays out all of the options thoroughly and with clarity. I think there is only one element that is not missing, but perhaps deserves more emphasis. We continue to treat economics, politics, philosophy, sociology, psychology, and the hard sciences as distinct and discrete spheres of knowledge and influence. With advances in technology that have entirely transformed all aspects of our lives, that is simply no longer possible. We must take a page from our leaders in science who are quickly integrating all functional disciplines into, essentially, one. That is how the universe ultimately works. One of the arguments for pushing the plane higher and higher is the recognition that democracy, as we have known it, will die if we don’t. It is, however, already dying, if not already dead. The democratic justification for growth, in other words, is a specious argument. We must redefine what it means to be free.To borrow a page from Darwin, none of the current disciplines will give up its identity quietly (With perhaps the exception of philosophers, who have largely given up or gone into hiding. Sadly.). Each will fight to the death to preserve its own privilege. It’s a bit like the game of Jenga. Who goes first?I won’t say Raworth would endorse this priority but she certainly makes the case for it. I think the first to go has to be the notion of shareholder supremacy. It is an anachronism of the most abusive kind, positing, as Raworth notes, employees as the ultimate outsiders looking in. It’s an unsustainable model. And it’s pure fallacy. To say that today’s investors own our corporations is like saying that the gamblers own the casinos. (At least in the case of gambling, the gamblers at least set foot in the casino.) As in the case of poker, the gamblers may own the pot, but not the cards, the table, or the dealer. And, as Raworth futher notes, changing the perspective will require a complete transformation of the process by which we currently manage our largest corporations. So be it. If it doesn’t start there, I don’t think any of the other transformative needs are feasible.Beyond that I believe that the only viable option for transformative change is to address the problem from the consumption and expectation side of things. We just don’t need all of this “stuff” in order to live fulfilling lives. We can and should live much more locally. And technology has given us the perfect opportunity. What really matters in life is to think and dream globally and the Internet has given us that opportunity at next to zero cost. The next step should be an easy one although no gambler ever got rich betting against the power and resilience of those entrenched interests who wish to protect the status quo. (Which is why our politics are such a mess.)At any rate, this really is a great book and I do hope we can collectively push it to the top of the bestseller list where it belongs. It’s a discussion we need to have, not just with our economists, but with our children, our colleagues, and our loved ones. (Not to imply we don’t love our children.)

Perhaps one of the most important works of socioeconomics seen in the last 50 years. Rather than simply identifying problems, Raworth presents a comprehensive and beautifully designed framework for overcoming the problems we face -- a true socioeconomy for a new century -- a century with a unique and never-seen-before set of inherited structural dangers and breaking points.Raworth's brilliant whole-planet thinking will certainly be held among the great economic architectures of the 21st century, a prototype for the absolutely necessary requirement to change our old (and deeply entrenched) ideas of "unlimited growth" into something sustainable for all earthly inhabitants. Brava, Kate, for gently leading us out dangerously antiquated thinking and into far smarter ways of understanding what it means to thrive and prosper and be a human community.Raworth presents a scientifically-based mix of market solutions constrained by sensible government regulations. They may not be the kind of regulation some like, such as those who deny anthropogenic climate change or the toxic global impact of CO2-loading, ocean acidification and microplastic gyres, soils depletion, rain-forest depletion, aquifer depletion, population growth, deepening socioeconomic non-linearity. First-world neoliberal policies have artificially decoupled all of these issues from economic theory. Such policies are killing our shared resources, our commons.Neoliberal. Alas, no word more properly embodies the reigning ideology of our era - one that venerates the logic of the market and artificially strips away the things that make us human. Some (like me) see this as a fatal flaw, while neoliberals see this as the ideal economic theory. One two-star commentor makes the immediate black/white jump to -Marxist revolutionary socialism- without bothering to address her key points, which have everything to do with science, survival, and behavioral economics, and nothing to do with Marxism or overt central control. Self-defined -libertarians- usually exhibit an undeveloped sense of our planetary commons and a dismissive attitude towards planetary science, throwing around words like Marxist. Raworth's arguments are deeply nuanced and decidedly not "Marxist" but rather call for balanced policy intervention, much like the modified free-market social democracies of Sweden, Germany, NZ, etc..

I was a little skeptical at the thought of another book on economics, so I opted for the cheaper kindle version. After twenty minutes with the book, I was so impressed that I also ordered the hard back version so that our hard-pressed library can have a copy.I've realized recently that our way of thinking about economics has led into a political cul-de-sac. This book has answers that ring true.

Having studied economics at 'A' level I was left with the impression that it was an excruciatingly dull subject. This was in 1986 and the course I was taking seemed obsessed with the 'big bang' of the early eighties and the wonders of the free market and deregulation. Reading Ms Raworth's book has proved very rewarding in many ways. It brings economics as a subject to life as different ideas are discussed and the different purposes of economics as understood by early economists are touched upon. This provides a suitable framework for the argument for a different way of thinking about economics and what economics should focus on to provide a means of support for everybody and the planet on which we depend.

This book was my first experience with reading Cortazar. From the first story on, the excitement of encountering a new (to me) brilliant writer went through me like an electric shock. The book injected an excitement and alertness into what otherwise might have been a sluggish weekend.I have found, however, that explaining the basis of this excitement to others is not easy. It comes down to the difficulty of explaining what it is that makes great writers truly great -- an elusive insight.Part of it is simple virtuosity; Cortazar possesses that which also distinguishes the writing of other greats such as Nabokov and Proust: that facility with language, the ability to find and to manipulate exactly the right words, to create a precise, vivid image, and to make music out of prose. (Note: I could perceive his virtuosity even though I read this book as an English translation.)But it goes beyond virtuosity. If Cortazar wrote about ideas to which I was indifferent, the writing would not matter to me. But his stories inspire those flashes of recognition that make reading exciting; he creates those "aha" moments through his ability to present a feeling or situation that you recognize on some level, even if it's one that never previously made it out of your subconscious and which you might not have thought to remark upon, had not Cortazar dug it up for you. From the general to the specific: This is a collection of short stories, most of which contain an element of the fantastic. Some of the flashes of recognition that I mention above are recognitions of mundane, daily feelings, but others are not. Cortazar seems to have ready access as well to our subconscious fears and to our dreams. To take but a few cases in point:One story involves a brother and sister who share a large, old wooden house, once owned by their great grandparents. At one point in the story, they hear voices and commotion from another part of the house. They bolt the doors, shut off that section, and confine themselves to living in the front part of the house. It's all left quite mysterious: Cortazar never explains who "they" are, who have taken over part of the house. But someting about this story rings eerily true; it's that bizarre combination of vivid, mundane reality, and unexplained phenomena, and illogical reactions to those phenomena, that characterize dreams.Another example is a story in which a young girl goes to live with distant relatives in their country house for a summer. The house has a tiger roaming the rooms, but let's put that aside: what is remarkable about the story is Cortazar's ability to bring the scene to life, of an urbanite or suburbanite who is new to this comparatively relaxed environment. In one small, but typically rendered scene, the main character finds a bug crawling in an antiquated wash basin. She flicks at it, it curls into a ball, and she easily washes it down with running water. This is classic Cortazar; with a few well-chosen sentences, he puts you in that world: a world where the reader senses the sunlight through the house, the smell of pollen in the air, the renewed emphasis on the freshness of vegetables at the local market, and the ease with such inconveniences as older plumbing and intrusions by bugs are encountered.Comparison with other writers is a bit unfair, because Cortazar has a voice all of his own. But in case it's helpful to you, Cortazar's precise prose reminded me a bit of Nabokov, his sense of wonder and magic recalled Steven Millhauser, and his trafficking in paradoxes a bit like Borges. But he's not quite like any of them: his prose focuses less than Borges on logical contradictions, and is more weighted toward precisely rendering sensory images.Several of the stories are outstanding. My favorites (in addition to the two mentioned above: "House Taken Over", and "Bestiary") included:Axolotls -- in which the narrator identifies very closely with an exotic amphibian species on his trips to the zoo.A Yellow Flower -- an encounter with a sort of reincarnation gone awryContinuity of Parks -- a very economical, very short story with an eerie, paradoxical twistThe Night Face Up -- a story in which reality and dreams are very difficult to distinguishCortazar is a master of the short story form. I would recommend him to anyone who likes the works of Borges, Millhauser, Nabokov, or Bruno Schulz.

The title story is the basis of the Antonioni film, though the two are very dissimilar. The cinematic adaptation is a work of art; the short story is intriguing and perverse. My favorite tale in Cortazar's book is "The Night Face Up," with its surprising and devastating ending. It's truly disturbing and not easy to forget

I ready many collections of short stories and I often find that they are like pop albums: a few catchy numbers up front followed by fillers, repeats and instrumental versions. But every one of these stories is entirely interesting, including "The Distances" which I admit I didn't understand at all, even the second time through. Many of these stories exist in the territory of terror and awe, but the three I liked best were all occasions of sustained compassion, and each revolved around a death. "At Your Service" is about a paid mourner who ends up grieving for real. "The Gates of Heaven" is about the death of a dancing girl. The novella "The Pursuer", based on the last days of Charlie Parker, is so convincing that I fell for it hook, line and sinker and believed I was reading an actual memoir, that he must have actually sat in a Paris hotel room with a ranting naked Charlie Parker. This novella is also a meditation on genius, which unfortunately does absolutely nothing to exempt one from ordinary misery. If you enjoy this, make sure you read `Cronopios and Famas', Cortazar's playful eccentric book of tiny stories and prose poems - there's nothing like it.

I'm a big fan of Cortazar's unique surrealistic writing style. For years, his short stories have been difficult or impossible to find in English. Finally, we have a HUGE collection of his best works, including (but not limited to) Continuity of the Parks, Axolotl, and Night Time Face Up, all professionally translated into English.

Parker fans will love the long jazz story.

LOVE THIS BOOK

Though I enjoyed these stories which are rich in ideas, and the use of magic realism to some extent, I always had the feeling that I would enjoy them more if I could read them in their original language - Spanish.Still, because Julio Corta'zar is a very famous Argentinian author I am glad to have an opportunity to read him.

Cortazar is an oft-overlooked master of the short story form. In this collection, he delivers stories befitted with beguiling metaphor, tremendous ambiguity, magical realist mind-bending, and, at the tail end of the book, some unrelenting tedium. Like Barthelme and Kakfa, Cortazar works best when he keeps it short and sweet. Wonderful capital-F Fabulist tales in this book include the story of a man turning into a salamander and a girl on summer vacation at a decaying manor house patrolled by a Bengal tiger. These stories, and another in which a couple is chased out of their house by a marauding, unknown force, sing with poetic language, and reveal some cosmic absurdity lurking behind the façade of everyday life...an absurdity we can glimpse if the fates align, but have no real chance at comprehending. The stories at the book's end are much more blasé, particularly one concerning a flailing Sid Vicious-esque musician bombing around Paris on an inevitable downward spiral. These stories do not diminish the power of what has come before, but they seem a little out of place--more like padding than anything else. The book, despite its uneven nature, is a must-read, however, for fans of black humor, magical realism, and so on.
