Although Evans originally wanted to be a writer, he had photos printed in small magazines and in some galleries while still in his 20s. Nau recounts his friendships with Hart Crane and James Agee, among others, which led to other assignments. Eventually, Evans went to work for Fortune magazine where he spent 20 years. The America that he documented was often that of ordinary people and disappearing architecture. Rich in details and unstaged, his works offer candid glimpses of our society, from Coney Island in the 1920s to Southern tenant farmers in the 1930s, and, later, to small towns and signs in the '70s. Excellent examples of the various periods appear throughout. The text succeeds in portraying his determination to photograph what mattered to him rather than what conventional wisdom might have dictated. Although the focus is on his professional life, mention is made of his marriages and bouts with alcoholism. If you enjoy seeing people being themselves and coping with the business of living on very little and really finding an "American Dream" that would be considered sub poverty to us now then check out this book. Like Dorothea Lange, Evans goes away from the mainstream to find America, and he shows it to us. A real necessity for any love of US culture or history.

Burdett refers to the project as her seven-and eight-year-old students' "unedited work." Their lively art portraying Shakespeare and scenes from his life seems to have been polished for publication. But the letters and diary entries that the youngsters have imagined for William and his family, reproduced with all their cuteness and misspellings intact, are appealing for their imaginative precocity and breadth of knowledge. The drawings and writings accompany short, labored verses that give the facts of Shakespeare's life accurately, though the forced rhyme is especially glaring in a book about the Bard. There is a strong sense of a well-meaning adult's heavy hand, and if that hand were involved, why did it not remove the grammatical errors? This book is the result of efforts that were clearly fun and enlightening for the children and serves as a good example for other teachers. These are amazing books. Thye were an excellent purchase.

My 9 year old was curious about Shakespeare so I ordered this book as well as three others in this series for her, and she loved them. She can't wait for me to order more for her.

Terrific!

I purchased this book because I was attracted to it and I intended to put it away until I could pull together an interesting unit study on Shakespeare. However, my two boys (7 and 9) could not stand to go to bed without me reading it to them first!! They were instantly attracted to artworks and writing done by kids their age and wouldn't let me pass a single page without reading everything! They enjoyed finding the spelling errors and I was certainly surprised at how many they caught, as I am sure they would've made many of the same ones. My boys asked, after reading the book, if we could study Shakespeare for school THIS week! Yikes, I have got some quick planning to do. This is a wonderfully inspiring leaping off point for a trip into the world of Shakespeare. At the end of the book, one of my sons said it well, "Hey mom, he wrote drama and he lived drama, too!" I think they got it.

How many people really know the details of Shakespeare's life! Find out in this well-done, rhyming text filled with kids illustrations and "letters" and "documents". For example: one child crafts Shakespeare's will...very interesting! Lois Burdett is a genius! Perfect for teaching about Shakespeare - for kids and adults! Buy It!

My son who is 2nd grade loved it and ate it up. After reading the book together, he and I played rhyming games just as the book was written about Shakespeare in rhymes! The pictures drawn by the author's students were also nicely done and appealed to him as well. Five stars without hesitation. Great way to introduce Shakespeare to children.

I was looking forward to this book because I tend to worry about everything... and pregnancy is such an emotional time that I needed all the help I could get! But overall I found the advice in this book to be the typical 'white rice is the same as brown rice' stuff. Sure there was some good, practical wisdom offered that basically shut down the old wives tales, but then there were other things that I just flat out disagreed with.For example, on one of the pages there's a side bar that talks about improving your odds of getting pregnant and the author states, 'Don't worry about your poor diet or how many lattes you drink.' Really?!? Don't worry about your poor diet?! You're trying to grow another human being! WHY would diet not play a role in helping you conceive? Sure, super unhealthy people get pregnant all the time, but that's not to say you shouldn't make an effort to make your 'baby house' as clean and healthy as possible. It will only help! When your body has all that proper nutrients it needs it can function more efficiently, fight off illnesses, better build and repair itself, and ensure your baby will get all the proper nutrients it needs to be strong and healthy. Not to mention during the first trimester you will probably be eating saltines and ginger-ale and just trying to survive the nausea. Better to start off on a healthy foot when you can!The author also doesn't advocate prenatal vitamins... He says that if you're eating healthy you won't need one. Ok, sure, but in this day in age when we are bombarded with stress, lack of sleep, hectic schedules, and nutrient depleted food, a prenatal can only help! Not to mention the importance of building up enough folic acid and other important vitamins BEFORE you get pregnant. My Dr. told me to take a prenatal at least 3 months before trying to make sure I had enough reserved for when I got pregnant. Plus my first trimester was tough... I had almost no appetite and was vomiting. My prenatal helped make sure I wasn't deficient. I certainly think there are crappy prenatals out there, but a good, organic, whole food vitamin will help ensure you and your baby are getting everything you need.Overall I'm not a huge fan this book, but I do think some of his advice is helpful. If trying to conceive I strongly recommend the book, "Taking Charge of Your Fertility," which basically talks about the importance of nutrition and how to dramatically increase your chances of conceiving naturally by recognizing your body's natural fertility signs.

My wife is anxious. About everything. A while back, I got her a copy of Cockpit Confidential, which is a book written by a pilot which (I gather) is about all of the facts and myths of commercial air travel. It really helped to ease my wife's anxiety every time she gets on a plane. Reading about the reality of the situation--the actual numbers and stories and explanations and redundancy--totally reassured her and eliminated all of those irrational fears that an anxious person has.This book did the same thing, but for pregnancy. I wish I had bought it sooner than the 2nd trimester. While she wasn't overly anxious or panicked at all, I knew she had some concerns. She didn't know what advice to take, what risks to worry about, or what horror stories to believe. Over the course of one evening, we laid on the couch, and I read her excerpts from this book. Just jumped around to different topics that seemed relevant or interesting. It's not the kind of thing I think you need to read cover to cover. But we both came away from it feeling like we knew a lot more about the reality of pregnancy and childbirth. It confirmed a lot of my suspicions--that a lot of the advice that you hear these days is overly cautious, and that the risks in most cases are minuscule and not worth worrying over.One big takeaway was from several sections about food-borne illnesses. The bottom line in nearly all cases is that the mother should try not to get sick herself, but that she doesn't have to change her whole diet to do so. If she eats something, and it makes her sick, that's probably not going to be good for her or the baby (but even then most illnesses are minor and do not affect the fetus). But she's not more likely to get listeria or parasites or anything else just because she's pregnant. Sushi isn't going to make the baby sick by its nature alone. So if she wants to eat some sushi, she might get sick from bad sushi (or anything else) just like I might. But the risk of the mother getting something so bad that it would endanger the baby is just tiny. So have some sushi if you want it. Or a beer or two. Or whatever. And don't worry about it. Except for cold cuts and cigarettes, of course. Take care of yourself and your baby will be fine. There's nothing to freak out about.It also had good chapters about childbirth (cesarean vs vaginal, different medications, etc.), vitamins and supplements, and more. There's something in it for everyone. I enjoyed the book, and I absolutely appreciate the calming effect that it had on my anxious, pregnant partner.

I like the advice in this book, but it can be summed up easily. Here it goes:Outside of prescription drugs and illegal drugs pretty much everything else is fine in moderation.Yeah, that's the whole message. I actually preferred Emily Oster's Expecting Better - which has largely the same message but is super data driven if you want to dive in for that. Obviously this book is older and if you don't care about the stats it would be a good place to get a reasonable perspective on how crazy the advice can be for expecting mothers.

Finally, a book that offers women some balance in terms of what is safe and what isn't during pregnancy!! Dr. Broder does an exceptional job of setting the pregnant woman's mind at ease. So many women (myself included!) are a bit frightful about harming their tiny humans before birth that they become preoccupied with every tiny risk, no matter how small. Now with the release of the live-action movie trilogy, virtually all the Tolkien-related books are being pulled off the shelves and rereleased -- this among them. It's a good, insightful collection of essays, but there's something vital missing...It's a compilation of essays, by various people. Among them are Bonniejean Christensen'sstudy of Gollum in "The Hobbit" -- there were two versions of the "Riddles in the Dark"chapter; Walter Scheps's "Fairy-Tale Morality of Lord of the Rings," which studies the ethicsof Tolkien's trilogy as well as traditional fairy-tales; Agnes Perkins and Helen Hill's essay onpower, corruption, the lust for power, and the One Ring; Deborah C. Rogers's study ofhumanity both in the "everyman" hobbits and in the noble Aragorn; Robert Plank's study ofthe Scouring of the Shire and how it reflects fascism; and several others. On the downside, Dorothy Matthews' "The Psychological Journey of Bilbo Baggins" is okay, but rather off-balance because it explains a hobbit's mind in complex jargon -- those don't go together.But there is a major problem. I was fortunate enough to find a first-edition paperback of this book, from the 1970s, and the last part of it is a special meaning and pronunciation guide by J.R.R. Tolkien himself. It's a wonderful bonus, and worth the price of the book alone. But for some reason, the chapter has been removed from the reprinted "Tolkien Compass." It's just essays, no Tolkien -- I'm not sure why it was removed, but it was."Tolkien Compass" is a good collection of scholarly essays on various facets of Tolkien'swork, which aren't dumbed down but also aren't too hard to understand. If the extra guide chapter had been included, this would have been a reissued treasure. As it is, it seems very incomplete.

Touch and feel book as advertised. Smaller than expected and disappointing to our son who likes the different textures in his Peter Rabbit touch and feel book. This book used "shimmery spots" which are just shiny ink on multiple pages and the few fur patches are not soft at all. Touch and feel spots were tiny. Couldn't hold his attention.

After watching Oprah interview Beyonce', I noticed she gave her this book for her newborn. I got it for my 12month old, and she LOVES it! After just reading it three times, my baby predicted that the bear was in the boat. Each page shows an image of a bath item : ie boat, then u flip the flap to the side (which is made of sturdy thick cardboard) and a teddy bear is shown in the boat. Another page showed a toy tub, then under the flap was a frog covered in suds. At the end, they show all the bath toys as a recap. My baby loves this book. I completely recommend it. It's high quality, thick shiny cardboard pages have real images of toy items (not drawn). Get it!

Cute little book, my 2 year old loves to look at and feel the pictures, and learns new words at the same time! The pages are nice and thick, easy to turn for young children, the pictures are simple yet colorful, and the textures in pictures make the book all the more interesting for the little ones!

Pictures include: Teddy in the bathtub with bubbles on his head, fish shaped soap bar, boat, rubber duck, whale bath toy, rubber frog, starfish towel, tooth brushes, swimming toy turtle, submarine, folded towels in a stack, teddy wrapped in a towel. The textures include terry cloth for the towels, foam mat for the rubber frog and duck, the rest are just sparkly paper with a little depression. Not as many textures as the other books in this series, but if your kid is all about bath-time books I am sure this will be a hit.

I was VERY disappointed with this purchase. The Baby Touch and Feel names is very misleading. There was little to no texture on the pages. There were seven (7) pages that had the SAME shiny, flat metal texture on the page- 1.) fish with shiny slick bubbles 2.) sail boat with shiny, slick sail 3.)whale with shiny, slick skin 4.) toothbrush with shiny slick handles 5.) turtle with shiny slick water spray around him 6.) submarine with shiny slick windows 7.) teddy bear with shiny slick water around him. THERE IS NOTHING TO TOUCH OR FEEL! The rubber duck and rubber bath tub had the same smooth rubber texture. If I saw this book in the book store, I would not have made the purchase. I expected to feel a variety of textures, which didn't happen. I also bought the Baby Touch and Feel "Animals" book and was equally disapointed.

Basic Touch and feel book. It is small enough for a baby to hold in both hands. Wish there was more to "feel" on each page.The area to touch is small and pretty basic. Book is durable though and easy to wipe off. I would buy one of these again because the book is affordable for what you get.

Like others have said this book has very few textures. Most are just the same shiny metallic paper. Two are almost identical rubber foam. Two are terry cloth material. This is by far the worst touch and feel book we have.

Cute book. Nothing fancy but good for the price.

It would have been much more satisfactory to offer several examples covering various domains of Microservices and explain why the Microservices were sized as such. After years of building microservices in both startup and corporate environments, I was still learning so much about decoupling services and data in a way that increases system cohesiveness. The authors accurately and comprehensively took apart each of the organizational impediments to the "microservice way", explaining each with real-world examples. Very good read. Anyone trying to increase their influence on their organizations technical trajectory should pick up this book.

To be clear, the technical content is generally quite good, although it is very high level (you won't find any concrete implementation examples here, or even crisply-specified schematic level descriptions of worked examples), there is nontrivial repetition, and (to my taste) there is a lack of conciseness, taking three pages to say something when one page would do.My main complaint is that at $39.99 list (~$30 on Amazon), there's just not enough contentâ€”a mere 146 pages, and those are small pages with a fairly large font. It's as if these (very knowledgeable) authors submitted an extended outline for something that would have made a great but long technical article, and O'Reilly rushed them into turning it into a short book as quickly as possible.I've been perusing listings for other recent O'Reilly titles on this topicâ€”Susan Fowler's "Production-ready Microservices" has been highly praised, but offers 172 pages for $38 (Amazon price), which is hard to justify for a technical book. If you bought both, you'd have spent ~$68 for ~300 pages of content that doesn't include much in the way of specifics.O'Reilly used to be the "go to" for concisely-written, clear, good-value books on rapidly-changing technical topics, but if this is what they've become, it's a lot less compelling.

First, I have to say that the book is very well-organized. Second, there are some good points and some chapters are quite strong.However, you could clearly feel that different chapters are written by different people. Some of the chapters were really tedious and not on point.What I found a big NO is the fact that in certain cases it is more about technology than the architectural principle behind it. The most obvious example is Docker. Yes, it is practically THE standard for Microservices, but I would like to hear a critical evaluation of it especially about what it is lacking. The overall Docker talk was very favourable and felt like an advert.I got the book for free at a conference, but I am not sure that the price of 32$ is justified for 100 pages. I would love to see updated version extending on the good points and deviating from technology.

One of the worst technical books I've read. The authors spent pages discussing irrelevant topics and repeatedly delved over and over these. Out of the 140 plus pages in this book, only a dozen have meaningful content. The book could have been easily condensed into an article. I'm surprised O'Reilly chose to publish

We purchased our house last year that has a beautiful wine cellar built by Perry Sims. His attention to detail is unmatched. His book highlights many of the important aspects that go into building a wine cellar. Some reviews complain that there are specific details missing, I would agree, but not for the same reasons. Perry builds custom high end cellars from scratch. With every cellar he builds he has to take into account a multitude of different variables, such as location to exterior walls, power available, ambient temperatures, and most importantly the desires of the owner. When our cellar ac unit went belly up we called him out for help, he was extremely professional and honest. He gave us options of replacement ac units he could install but never once tried to persuade us with a specific brand. He stated he does not feel comfortable recommending one brand over another as he is not in the business of selling ac units but rather building custom wine cellars the home owner will enjoy for generations. We picked a unit and a few weeks later he performed a flawless install. He truly is a artist when it comes to wood working. His book is a great guide for gainingideas and getting an understanding of what is involved in building a cellar. You can read 1000's of books but the bottom line is if your expecting to build one that compares to his workmanship your wasting your time.

Very informative book about the requirements needed to have an efficient and decorative wine cellar in your home. Has all the information needed for racks and equipment to keep the atmosphere perfect for storing wines. A must read for the home owner looking to create a cellar in an existing home or what to look for in building a cellar for a new home.

Covers everything I needed - mainly ideas for room and rack construction plus some decorative design concepts. Beautifully photographed and highly readable.

Good guide to build your own wine cellar.

The negative reviews here mystify me. This is a wonderfully illustrated book, that covers the details - such as the requirements for exterior walls - that other books miss.

Not very informative and poor layout.

This is a pretty book. It has nice pictures of some very pretty cellars. From a practical standpoint though, only about 25% of it is actually worthwhile. They should offer a scaled down version at at quarter of the price.

I am planning to build a 2,000 bottle cellar myself and have found the published literature on the subject inadequate. After purchasing this book, I am no better off than I was prior to reading it. The book is so general that unless you do not know what wine is, it will tell you almost nothing you do not already know. It spends an inordinate amount of time discussing things like how to install and use a wine cooler. I own two wine coolers already and I assume almost everyone planning a wine cellar knows what a wine cooler is and how to turn one on. It spends a bunch of time on wine drinking, selection and pouring which is not what anyone buying this book is looking for. It also spends time discussing how to put shelves in a closet or under stairs, all of which is common sense. I need help on what type of vapor barrier to buy, how thick the studs should be, what is the best lighting to use, what coolers are best, what insulation will handle moisture the best, how to level a basement floor prior to installing tile, what types of wall finishes are best, what wood is best for racks, what stain is best, what themometers and humidity sensors are best, most efficient and best looking floor plans, etc. This book offers no solutions to the real issues with building a cellar. I found more real information doing a few hours of web blog searches than I found in the same amount of time reading this book. I found the Richard Gold book on the subject much more informative even though it focuses on passive cellars and has no pretty color pictures.
