I'll start by saying I have always been a big fan of Bowen Theory, however I have never been enamored with Edwin Friedman or his school of thought - Peter Steinke falling into that category. Steinke makes some critical errors in his application of Bowen theory to congregational systems. The first is the way he collapses self-differentiation with emotional hijacking from Daniel Goleman's works. Steinke then treats the emotional hijacking as if it's a result of poor choices and insists that leaders simply be "a non-anxious presence." The two theories are actually very different in scope and function and it's inappropriate at best to conflate them the way he did. All throughout the book Steinke presents a very either/or portrait of the human psyche. Either someone is differentiated and therefore mature, or they are undifferentiated and immature. Any serious practitioner of Bowen theory will demonstrate that self-differentiation is a scale which all human beings fall on. No one is ever a 0 and no one is ever at 100 - we all fall somewhere in between. This becomes glaringly obvious in his discussion of pseudo and basic self where he portrays Moses as the epitome of basic self and his brother Aaron as the epitome of pseudo self. Again serious practitioners of Bowen Theory recognize that human beings have both a basic self and a pseudo self - it's the relative degrees of one to the other that make up a person's self-differentiation. Steinke also gives an inadequate description of self-differentiation, applying solely the descriptions of the basic self. While connected, a much better description of differentiation is one in which a person is able to distinguish his or her thoughts from his or her feelings, and also from the thoughts and feelings of others. Low levels of this ability result in higher levels of emotional fusion. Steinke's advice throughout the book amounts to little more than being non-anxious, and acting on principle. Most of the examples he gives relate to what happens in the moment of a crisis, while the most important work of Bowen Theory happens outside of crises. A person desiring to work on their self-differentiation is best served by utilizing a coach or a trained therapist who can help them grow. There are many good books on Bowen Theory out there. I would not consider this to be one of them. If you choose to read this book please take his conclusions with a grain of salt and please investigate some of the other wonderful resources that are out there.
An interesting combination of cell biology, Bible stories, and systems dynamics -- used to highlight some of the dysfunction typical of religious communities and prescribe behaviors likely to promote strong leadership. Those already deeply involved in congregational politics will recognize some of the parishioner types described. Steinke's suggestions for leadership success aren't easy, but they sure seem promising and admirable.
This was a great book that challenged me a great deal to think through my leadership style and tendencies. I am still trying to figure out what it means to be a "self-differentiated" leader, but this book made me do a great deal of evaluation of some of the leadership decisions I have made and help me to understand why sometimes my solutions led to more complicated situations rather than to help untangle them. I would highly recommend this book for anyone in leadership of any type.
Practical steps for handling different areas of conflict in churches. Written more to churches that have episcopal type of government rather than churches in congregational control and style but still offers valid helps that can be applied.
Steinke enables readers to quickly get a 50,000-feet view of what happens when challenging events occur in churches. This perspective enables leaders to properly analyze the problem and have confidence and emotional strength to implement solutions.For example, understanding that people are usually more interested in relieving their own anxiety rather than managing the crisis is a key factor in the strategy a leader uses in a crisis. By focusing on relieving anxiety, a leader can more quickly get to the heart of the issue and ignore the static (e.g. blaming, criticizing, taking offense, desire for instant solutions, avoiding responsibility) that anxiety causes.The solution is for a leader to use calm, reflective, and principled action toward working through the problems. He responds rather than reacts. He changes the conflict from a win/lose situation to a learning situation so that both groups can focus on solving the problem rather than wining. The effects of this thoughtful approach will permeate the whole organization and offset the negative effects caused by those who are controlled by anxiety.If you would like help in analyzing and solving conflicts in churches, this book is for you. It will give you the theoretical and practical help that you are looking for.
This book provided wonderful content to prepare me for a period of transition at our church. It was easy to read and gave great spiritual and physiological references for the challenges congregational leaders face in times of change. Scenarios of real life issues are included as well as checklists and open ended questions. I am much better prepared to lead in the anxious time approaching our congregation.
A good book that, at its core, warns leaders that change and anxious times are your staples if you want a healthy organization. Written with churchs in mind, this book explores how change can affect an organization. Look leaders must be mindful of the early signs of change, know how to ride it out or facilitate healthy chsngs. and how to instigate healthy change. It's final chapter deals with members and leaders who rely on their charm and are too worried about the status quo, and their detrimental effect on the organization.
For those familiar with Edwin Friedman's book "Failure of Nerve"--this is the same thing with Bible verses attached. He gives great examples of churches in crisis and how leadership can benefit or harm the situation. Words like "self-differentiation" and "anxiety" take on whole new meaning when you understand his perspective. Instead of giving you the "tools" to use in your leadership, he gives you the conviction that healing a community is all about the leader's presence.
