About the Author

Nivaldo Tro is Professor of Chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum. He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution. Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces. He has twice been honored as Westmont's outstanding teacher of the year and has also received the college's outstanding researcher of the year award. Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Ali, Kyle, and Kaden. In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys reading good literature to his children and being outdoors with his family.

I have just bought this brand new 3rd edition and compared it with my 1st edition. They are almost exactly the same, even down to the page numbers. This is an old scam by textbook publishers, but usually they will at least change around the table of contents and put in new diagrams, photos and tables. Not so with this title.And if the 1st and 3rd editions are almost exact copies, then I'm sure the 2nd edition would be fine too.Also, do not think that you need to buy the "Custom Edition" for your school, it's just the campus bookstore's and publisher's way of keeping you off Amazon and charging you double for an already overpriced book.

Chemistry: A Molecular ApproachEven though it says twice in the description that the ebook comes with Mastering Chemistry, and it is the first result with an ISBN search that includes Mastering Chemistry, it actually doesn't contain Mastering Chemistry. False adverting at its finest. Chatted with support and all they would do is refund my money so I can order a hardcover. I can't go without a text while in a class. Very bad customer service.

Chemistry is my least favorite subject and the one I struggle with the most but this textbook provides lots of helpful examples that have step by step explanations. This is one of the few textbooks I've actually read and worked through completely and it doesn't disappoint. I went from getting solid C's in chemistry to an A-/B+ level, which I think is pretty good. I do wish the chapters were a bit shorter though but I guess it would be hard to condense all the material.

Great book, included even more than I needed for my class. It was frustrating that it did not include much of the appendix information that most of the other books include such as acid/base values, oxidizing/reducing agent values, etc. the tables in the chapters are only partial and refer one to a nonexistent appendix to see the "rest of the values" that this book doesn't include. It's too bad because this was actually a wonderful book otherwise. It includes extra information and problems that the other version of the general chemistry book does not and it helped carry me to an A in my chemistry 2 course.

Content of the chapters matched up with the non-global edition. BUT, the exercises/word problems and answers were almost always different than the non-global edition. So, if youâ€™re purchasing for class, I would spend the extra money for the non-global edition. I got lucky and had a professor that let me take pictures of her exercises and answers in the non-global edition since Iâ€™d already bought the global edition. Just an FYI!

This is a good chemistry book for anyone in an AP chemistry or college chemistry setting for those taking their first Chemistry course in a post secondary school setting. I have seen a better book for this topic but this book does serve its purpose and I would recommend using it consistently especially if this is assigned in your course. The explanations are fairly straight forward and examples are numerous throughout the book. If you follow this book there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't get an A in the course you are taking unless your teacher decides to digress to more advanced topics such as Organic Chemistry.

Been using this book for several terms now for my general chemistry sequence and it was a little cheaper than buying it at the campus bookstore. Very satisfied with the purchase. Tro does a great job walking through the problem solving and using real world examples, but I've found that problems can ask you to find a given variable in an equation and the book may never give an example like that. So the book is good but you won't see every kind of problem i.e. it might be up to you to rearrange the equation. This is not a fault of the book just expect to have to do some critical thinking as they don't spoon feed you everything.

Complex concepts, such as rate laws and the more difficult concepts of acids and bases among others, were broken down well and explained with helpful detail. It is the type of book that you can sit and read for a longer period of time because, although it seems like it is based on size, it isn't a verbose book and relates chemistry topics to the real world. The chapter review exercises are also very well organized, getting a bit more and more difficult as you progress rather than mix a very simple problem with a very difficult one right after.Toward the end of the chapter, they also provide a unique section called the "Key Learning Objectives" where they guide you toward specific chapter review exercises that relate to in-chapter example problems. Speaking of those in-chapter example problems, I thought it was nice how they guide you through a problem and then leave a "For Practice" one that has no guidance and challenges you to mimic the path they gave for the previous example problem.My college used this book for an entire year for a general chemistry sequence, so I experienced this entire book and was satisfied with it overall.

70-200mm lens at 200mm, ISO 125, 1/3 sec. at f/10I would describe myself as a budding enthusiast. I've had a Canon Rebel T1i for about four years, but have never really gotten beyond full auto, and sometimes struggled even with that, particularly at night. I was looking for a book to explain three basic things:1. Camera bodies (dSLRs vs. mirrorless Micro Four Thirds, crop vs. full frame, etc.)2. Lenses (focal length, zoom power, and aperture, plus the impact of crop factor)3. Technical basics (aperture, ISO, and shutter speed; what PPI and DPI really mean in practical terms; the difference between JPEG and Raw; what Landscape and Portrait and other preset modes on your camera are actually doing).All of these questions were basically answered in the first few chapters and ~100 pages of the book, and in a pretty easy read. After reading those first few chapters, I found myself able to fairly competently browse photography website and magazines without being completely lost. I can tell you what f/2.8 is (the aperture), what 1/500 sec. refers to (shutter speed), and what a photographer means by ISO 100 and 70-200mm at 200mm.Much of the middle of the book (chapters 4-7) deal with the basics of photography and composition, and is probably not any better or worse than other entry level books on photography. The remainder of the book deals with fairly basic (for dummies) material on downloading and printing pictures (chapters 8 and 9), and stuff like creating desktop wallpaper and slide shows (chapter 10).Overall, I think the book is a pretty good value for $15. Personally, I've shied away from the "For Dummies" line in the past, as I've found that there are better books for many of the subjects that I have been interested in. But if you're like me and are at a level where you're even considering a "For Dummies" book -- and if you're reading this review, I suspect you are -- then this book should do the trick, and my guess is that Digital Photography For Dummies is probably exactly the book you are looking for.

Great book. Simple easy to read and understand. I bought a canon rebel last year. I have kept it on auto since day one because I was intimidated by my first dslr camera.Its time to move forward and see what I can learn!!!

Most of the first half of the book deals with selection of a digital point-and-shoot or DSLR, an area that I haven't seen addressed elsewhere other than in comparison tests in popular magazines. The treatment in the book is easily accessible by beginners, unlike much of the meat of the comparison articles which are performance parameter comparisons.The second half of the book is a tutorial on effective use of a digital point-and-shoot or DSLR right out of the box. I bought this book as a gift for a very intelligent fellow who has had some difficulty in effective use of a great DSLR, and this part of the book could have been written for him and his family. The book ends with a chapter that is action-packed with excellent tips on using the camera, getting the pictures out of it, sending them by e-mail or putting them on a blog or whatever, and printing them through web services, at CVS or whatever, or at home. Thus the all-important step of how to get great prints from a great camera is the ending of the book.For those who shoot for Facebook or other blogs or to display their cameras in e-mail or on smartphones, or even those who simply use the great miniature cameras that come with some newer smartphones, this book is an excellent tutorial and reference for getting pictures that display well on computers, tablets, and smartphones. Except for the number of pixels (you need lots more pixels for sharp prints), it's the same art and science.

This book provides a great introduction to the basic techniques of serious digital photography. This was wonderful for me as I had literally NO idea of how to operate a digital camera correctly (I was the stand-point-shoot kind of guy) and I'm training to become an Archaeologist, so I really need to know my way around Photography (also, I love animals -especially bugs- and spend lots of time chasing them down and taking pics of them). This book got me from not knowing why even my stills got blurred (I have shaky hands) to actually getting almost exactly the pictures I want every time. I say "almost" because my point-and-shoot camera is only one step above "basic", but I'm sure as soon as I get my hands on a nice SLR I'll be able to nail it because of this book.The computer chapters take you through the very basics of viewing, downloading, printing, making minor edits to your pictures and even creating screensavers on common software and platforms (for example, Windows Live Photo Gallery), which is great, because the author doesn't assume you have gargantuan pro (or semi-pro) software for photo edition. The only thing lacking, in my oppinion, is too few info on lenses (that would've made it perfect), but then again, the book is aimed for laymen, which don't necessarily own SLRs (I don't) and probably won't need to much info on lenses. Still, make no mistake: you'll have the fundamental data on lenses here and learn what (and where) to look for when you decide to take the SLR step and buy lenses.I must stress, though, that this is aimed for the very beginners. If you already know about illumination, manipulating ISO, shutter speeds, balancing colors, composing images, digitally retouching pics and stuff, you may find it too basic. Again, if you know nothing about these subjects, this book is a great place to start. If you don't even have a camera but are considering getting one, this is for you: you'll feel quite satisfied when you get the most juice from your camera no matter how simple it is.

He and I are about the same age, and reading further I realized dumb luck plays a big part in our success or grave misfortune on motorcycles. Charley's luck ran out one winter day in Portugal. How he reflected on this major mishap, and so much more, is the true thrust of this stirring autobiography. I spent just enough time around Charley to start to know him, just a little. Reading his reflections in the book, I see how with sufficient time in months of casts, pain, uncertainty, and humiliating circumstances, how self-doubt and melancholy must start to creep in. But guess what: the man's spirit won out, end of the day. That, folks is a portrait in courage.Charley's interludes discussing his family, upbringing in Ireland, struggles in school and acting, hopes and dreams, lucky and unlucky breaks were always interesting and sometimes funny, making this book a real page-turner. I empathize very much with the fear he described at Dakar and indeed in any road race, learning to cope with that myself in amateur road racing years ago. And our ambulance was mere feet away, not tens or hundreds of miles.But the bulk of the book is of course about Charley's recovery, the struggles and self-reflection. Anyone who has faced great life-trauma can empathize, doubly so if you are a fellow rider and wonder, "would I have the same fierce determination Charley does, in similar circumstances?" I smiled widely at his successes, chuckled at his goofs, and frowned at his setbacks.The writing and editing are excellent. Charlie was upfront about his dyslexia with me as well, a near stranger, during one evening during our brief group trip together in 2015. I had suggested, ironically, he consider an autobiography given all his strange and wonderful adventures! Fortunately, seems he found a way to capture his thoughts into such a wonderful narrative. Well done, Boorman! Keep up the good fight and keep that recovery rolling, and I will keep needling your friend Billy Ward (through FB and "across the pond" in America) about your next big ride with clients. I'm in. We are all in: fellow riders standing with you in your recovery and zeal to do this thing that only you do so well. Keep living that life less ordinary!

Exactly where does one start, when you've come across such a treasure. I have my short list of life's favorites; Bikes, Movies, Books, Places, etc., ...and this book just made the top of my list. As I sit here trying to put into words just how amazing this read is, I'm at a loss on how exactly to do it justice. What I can say is this, ...being a motorcyclist myself, and lover of all things two wheeled, I COULD NOT put this book down. The first day I received it from Amazon, I started reading it. And at 320-pages, I found myself over half way through the book before forcing myself to put it aside so that I could go to bed. But truth be told, ...I didn't want to. I felt as though through this entire read that I was right there, ...right by Charley's side. I could picture everything so vividly based on what he had written. Its just such an amazing read. I own both of the Long Way Series on DVD, and have eagerly watched each one from beginning to end no less than a dozen times each. I never get tired of either, even though I know them both by heart. I had the privilege and honor of meeting Charley once a few years back at IMS in Long Beach, CA. I realize he must have met hundreds, if not thousands of fans that weekend, but it truly made the show for me to get to meet him. I would have loved to hit the Irish bar across the street from the convention center, and talk bikes all day long. In addition to being a huge motorcycle enthusiast, I've had two major crashes throughout my own life, and could relate to Charley's story in so many ways, and on so many different levels. From the hospital and the surgeries, to the external fixator and physical therapy, ...I've been their myself first hand. Maybe thats one of the reasons this book hit home with me. The bottom line is this, if you're a fan of Charley, or of his adventures, consider this book a must read. You will not be disappointed. And in closing, ...if your eyes should ever come across this review here on Amazon Charley, ...I would just like to say thank you. It's truly one of, if not the best book I've read to date.

I'll have to admit that after reading and watching "Long Way Around" & "Long Way Down", I thought of Charley Boorman in a not-so-positive way. He seemed to come off as, well--boorish (pun intended) and a hanger-on.But that was simply my own limited perception. After reading this very personal and soul-searching book, I came away with a totally different picture of this man. He is truly an example of a man who, although gifted many things, has worked and struggled to become what he is. His true love for his family and friends is an example to us all. His "come-back" from his accident is just one more example of Charley coming back from the realities that life hands each of us--no matter their position or fame.I felt like he and I had a long conversation about life and afterwards, I felt like he had taught me some lessons.A good read and I look forward to more.

If you've read the other Long Way _____ books or watched the episodes, the ones with his buddy Ewan, you don't really get to know Charley a whole lot. It's easy to get overshadowed by someone like Ewan McGregor no matter who you are. By the time you're finished with this book, you sort of do feel like you know who Charley Boorman is, what he's about, and what's important to him. I feel like if I bumped into him somewhere I'd already know heaps about him. This book isn't just about his recovery from his accident, it's a bit of a character study which he does on himself. While not a full auto-biography, it's enough of one that keeps one interested and going along in the book. He does a good job flipping between his recovery and memories, back to his recovery. The book isn't just about his recovery- there's also a lot of anecdotes about riding that just aren't available in the other books. If you've read the other Long Way books, give this a firm go.

Great technical asset, must have for technical library

Goldstein et al have written a book that serves as an excellent introduction to the SEM, and is also a formidable reference. When I took SEM at NC State University, it was taught from this book. Between our professor and this text, I learned the ins and outs of the SEM, and I keep the book within arms reach whenever I'm at work.Goldstein covers everything from the basics of operation, through image formation, sample prep, usage in particular fields of study -- everything!If you get one SEM book, get this one.

This was an excellent book (5 stars) but has been superseded by the 3rd edition. Buy it only for historical interest.

This is an excellent textbook for graduate students majoring in Materials Science. The text is easy to read, and accompanied by plenty of photographs and schematics, is easy to understand. Covers almost every aspect of SEM and X-ray micro-analysis e.g. underlying science, technology, and practical use. Each chapter begins at a basic level and gradually develops the subject to intricate detail, and depending on the level of study one may skip chapters or part of a chapter.

This book, although not the newest textbook on the market, is THE textbook to have if you are looking for the history, theory or applications of electron microscopy and x-ray microanalysis. Well written, thorough and packed full of well-designed diagrams illustrating the principles described. I've used this textbook in classroom and laboratory settings with excellent results. Looking forward to the next edition!

It was a privilege to learn the subjects of SEM and TEM from the the author of this book himself (David Joy). This is an excellent book which starts from the basics and it depends on the researcher how deep he wanna go. The book provides in depth analysis as well if required. Great resource book.

Oh my, don't miss out on ANY of Jane's Furry Logic books. I sent one to a 16 yr. old friend who had a concussion and has been out of regular school for 6 mos. With a picture and just a few words the author manages to convey some of our deepest thoughts and feelings. Not a children's book despite charming covers but children would probably enjoy and "get it" too.

I enjoyed most of the recipes in this Vegan and Vegetarian air fryer cookbook. Most of them turn out crispy! Am a proud Vegan Weight Watcher.

I bought a new Power air fryer but I don't really understand the manual because it was not written in English so I had to first translate the write ups. The stress made me almost condemn the air fryer. But thank God for this Vegan and Vegetarian air fryer cookbook. It is not just a cookbook for me. I also see it as an air fryer oven manual. Thanks to the author. He really saved me from the great stress!

The special seasons air fryer recipes are the best. I don't only cook them on special occasions, I cook them even in ordinary seasons because my husband will always want me to repeat some of the meals. I think he now shows me more love these days. Thank you Renee for helping me win my hubby's love again with your cookbook!

I felt reluctant in buying this cookbook but thank God I finally bought it. Although it does not have many recipe images but the recipe steps were simple to follow. My last son Kelly will always go through the recipes and pick the ones he loves and they tasted great!

He does not take an apologetic (and therefore weak and defensive) stance which is particularly refreshing. That Hadith about 72 virgins? He talks at length in the book itself and includes an appendix as well! He takes care to present multiple viewpoints with nuance, leaving the reader to think for herself about which argument and use of evidence seems most convincing.Th reason I consider this book compassionate is that Brown manages to capture the raw yearning for meaning and spirituality among humans of all heritages without sacrificing intellectual honesty or academic rigor. The questions in this regard which he poses are not uncritically sympathetic to his own identification with Islam, but instead highlight the human civilization's search for meaning and our cumulative efforts to collect, categorize, standardize and neatly package Truth as tradition.I can't believe I waited so long to read this book!

For Muslims Al Quran is infallable. And Hadiths, despite composed by men, are a close second. But in reality the people who read them are still subject to (mis)interpretation, are prone to errors and human emotions like greed and envy, or can have their own hidden agendas using religious doctrines. This book is about that human fallability.The book shows the complex intellectual and spiritual debates on the interpretation of Al Quran, and how complicated and political the writings of the Hadiths are. It shows that Islam is where it is today not only through the conquerings and assimilations, but also as a result of many theological frictions occurring for the past 1400 years.The central message of this book is very straight to the point: we need to read Al Quran wholly, from cover to cover (or Khatam). Reading only some verses of Al Quran or just bits and pieces would take the verses out of context, and thus their individual messages could be highly misleading - the major problem the world has always had since the 600s, especially today.Chapter 3 was spot on in highlighting this point. The author, Jonathan A.C. Brown, shows the infalibility of the work of Shakespeare, the Bibble, even Homer's Illiad and Odyssey, where each one of them have obvious flaws but were overlooked. So why should we intellectually scrutinise the blank spots of the Quran? The point of this chapter is, if we read the texts separately it will indeed produce oddities and flaws (or blank spots), but if we read them wholly the big picture will make sense in the end, just like the work of Shakespeare and Homer.Moreover, it seems like everything are being discussed by his book. Everything, including controversial topics like the Hadith about masturbation, the long debate about who is entitled for zakat, and the relevancy of Quranic verses and Hadiths in modern time. It also discusses whether a woman can lead a mass prayer, an extensive discussion and analysis on syariah banking, and those 72 virgins alledgedly "promised" to martyrs.It also shows the extensive debate between Muslim ulamas and philosophers on reading the Quran and Hadiths in a literal way, including the literal reality of heaven and hell. Most importantly, using many references from various ulamas and scholars, the author also directly answer one controversial verse with another verse that cancels it out, and explains the reasoning and the context for those particular verses to emerge.For example, the controversial verse "when you meet the unbelievers in battle, smite their necks until you overcome them, then bind them as prisoners, either then setting them free out of munificence or for a ransom, until the war ends...." (47:4) is actually cancelled out by "It is not for a prophet to take prisoners until he has triumphed in the land" (8:67) and "Fight the polytheists altogether as they fight you altogether" (9:36).Another example is the "wife beating verse" (An-Nisa 4:34) that is often misinterpreted, because the syariah in no way condoned a husband striking his wife, and the Prophet himself never struck a hand on any of his wives. A similar controversy lies in "honour killing", where the book clearly state that no Muslim scholar of any sect throughout history has sanctioned a man killing his wife or sister or daughter for tarnishing family honour. The author then elaborate the context that honour killing is a product of patriarchal societies in underdeveloped economies, including those not predominantly Muslim countries like Brazil and India.This is no doubt a truly inspiring book, and it definitely will be my go-to reference book whenever I need to understand any specific matters under Islamic law. The fact that so many briliant scholars debating so many specific aspects of the Quran and Hadiths - as analysed extensively in the book - it humbles me, and show how small I am in the presence of the many experts, and how little I know about my own Holy Book and the sayings of my Prophet. With so much wealth of hard truths and brilliant reasonings this book is a must-read for every Muslims.

I'm a Muslim American woman, and I have read a number of books and essays about various parts of Islamic history. But, I've always been left with a fragmented sense of the history of Islamic thought. This book does an excellent job creating a narrative and progression, tying all the different pieces together, in an easy accessible manner. I am still in the middle of reading it, but I'm finding I can't put it down.

For most westerners, "Sharia" means nothing but cutting off the hands of thieves. However, the ad hoc barbarities given the name of Sharia by ISIS and the Taliban bear very little resemblance to this rich and complex tradition. Brown shows that this tradition deserves respect as well as critique, and why Muhammad is portrayed as one of civilization's great lawmakers on the upper Freize of the US supreme court building. This is a rich living tradition that was never afraid to reexamine and re-invent itself during Islam's golden age, and Brown shows that such re-invention is the key for a vital Islam in todays world.

This is a straight-talking practical guide to getting a little dough through small claims court. The book is well-written, explanatory, and through. Read it before you miss that first house payment if you can, before you respond to the foreclosure papers, before you walk into court or even after you've been to court and lost. You still will gain some perspective on your situation if nothing else. I wish I would have read it much sooner but it was still very helpful. Thank you Alan Sims. The general public would have been better off following the essence of this book rather than the government holding up these stupid modifications that, if you could get one, only made the banks more money and cost the homeowners valuable time they could have better spent revamping their lives.

This is one of the best books I've read, written in laymens language and easy to understand.
