I'm a synthetic organic chemistry grad student, and here is my two cents: It is partially an actual workbook for you to run experiments to analyze for yourself. It also explains the basic workings of an NMR that I have had a hard time finding in regular spectrometry books (and people). It also has some interesting information on odd things you might see, that ultimately save you a lot of time in your workday.

This book is excellent as a book to begin learning more practical aspects of NMR. Other texts are better as basic texts, but for learning why pulse sequences work and what each component does, this is excellent.For the most part, what's in this book is still current, but it could definitely use an update to reflect the wider use of pulsed field gradients, which are now extremely ubiquitous.

We find out about the rise of the nutrition industry and how they’ve led us astray. We’ve all heard that fresh, less-processed is better, but the author does an excellent job of explaining why. Living in Switzerland decades ago, I said, half jokingly with no scientific basis in my head, that the cheese and chocolate was excellent because of happy cows, all roaming the hillsides looking content indeed. The author validates my offhand comment and explains the science behind it. I’ve been buying eggs from pasture grazed hens, for the sake of the hens. The author tells us that the nutrition content of eggs from grass-grazed eggs is vastly different from those of grain-fed hens. I’ve been buying grass-fed beef after cringing at the conditions in El Paso and Central California feed lots after driving past, again for the cows’ sake. The author explains how the meat from grain fed cows is very different nutritionally from naturally grass-grazing cows. Interesting how consideration and care for the animals in our food supply chain dovetails with our own health. This book is a must read for anyone who believes that what you eat effects your health and wants a simple framework for making better eating choices.

This book was life-changing for me! I found Pollan's writing style to be thoughtful, clear, and relatable. And I can't tell you how many times "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." has run through my head in the years since first reading it. I appreciate how he challenges so much of what we hear about diet -- every time researchers think they have the key to nutrition or weight loss, something new is discovered to turn it on its head.The book helped me explore my interest in more traditional diets made up of pure/whole foods, leave behind food-like (and gimmicky) products in the stores, and switch to cooking & baking from scratch. After reading it, I was inspired to buy a grain mill for my kitchen so I could grind my own flour and truly bake from scratch using whole grain flour (and wrote a get-started guide to help others do the same). Being able to control what goes into my food has improved my health and energy. I can't recommend this book enough.I also like the companion book "Food Rules" Food Rules: An Eater's Manual, which I'd recommend if you want a brief "just tell me what to do" book. But for more detailed information that may help you change your food and eating mindset, "In Defense of Food" is the way to go.

If you've read other books on food, you'll find this to be written better but not containing much new information. It's as if Pollan took the other information out there and regurgitated it in a more digestible format. Which can be a good thing, if you consider the huge tomes out there that are difficult to read.Pollan covers baby formula and how it's essentially an experiment (p.32). Techno-foods: "modern cornucopia of highly processed foodlike products." (p.14) Public confusion: "thirty years of nutritional advice have left us fatter, sicker, and more poorly nourished." (p.81) This first section covers monocultures, the industrialized food model, distraction of the real message, and detachment from our food. Pollan seems to be driving home the message that any food that purports to have health benefits really ought to be avoided, that it's "a strong indication it's not really food." (p.2) Later he tells us quite simply to "watch out for those health claims." (p.40) This really got my mental juices flowing and made me consider the counter arguments to that.The most impactful take-away as I finished was the idea that we really don't need books on what to eat. At one time, he tells us that nutritionism has done us no good, "At the behest of government panels, nutrition scientists, and public health officials, we have dramatically changed the way we eat and the way we think about food [...this] has done little for our health, except possibly to make it worse." (p.40) Gee, that is so inspiring. As a parent, I think I'd rather take this message, with a nice positive spin and which reinforces the message that we're smarter than we think we are, "most of what we need to know about how to eat we already know." (p.13)He tells us that "seventeen thousand new food products" are presented to us every year (p.133) "Although an estimated 80 percent of cases of type 2 diabetes could be prevented by a change of diet and exercise, it looks like the smart money is instead on the creation of a vast new diabetes industry." (p.136) "Medicine is learning how to keep alive the people whom the Western diet is making sick." (p.135) "Don't eat anything incapable of rotting." (p.149) "Ordinary food is still out there, however, still being grown and occasionally sold in the supermarket, and this ordinary food is what we should be eating." (p.147) Don't eat anything my great grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. (p.148)This book boils down to a lot of rules for better eating. Some of them, for me, are doable. Some of them are not. What I can adopt is a mesh of several of his uidelines... "eat meals" and "try not to eat alone" and "do all your eating at a table." My great grandmother would think it silly, though, if those were guidelines at all.

...and I was reading Dostoevsky when I was in 5th grade! At 64, I've been avidly reading 60 years and THIS BOOK is one of the all time most important and best books I've ever read.

What a wonderfully encouraging book filled with convicting messages that I knew but needed reminding of. I truly want to act on my faith. I have but I need to do more. This book just made me more antsy than ever. :: sigh :: It was excellent but so short that I was sad it was over. Gary Haugen is always so encouraging, and I am so thankful for the work of International Justice Mission. Every time he writes a book, the Holy Spirit just flows out of him (he's a great speaker as well).

Amazing. Every page is worth it.

I was concerned "Just Courage" would be a book about how the government or quasi-governmental organizations should step in and solve the problems of injustice. This book wisely sidesteps that problem by analogy - we can disagree what the perfect marriage looks like, but we all agree adultury is wrong. He discusses fighting slavery and oppression that we all agree is wrong, and argues that Christians should be doing so - NOW. There are many Christians already at it, and the rest of us need to get to work. Beware that this book will make you confront whether you want comfort or courage. I recommend it for all, especially those of us in America who often forget the injustice throughout the rest of the world.

This book was highly recommended to us but we couldn't get over the scolding tone and never finished it. Our friend was greatly inspired by it however.

Reader beware, if you would rather sit in a safety bubble and watch life pass you by, then this book is not for you! It is highly motivational, not because the author is cunning or pushy, but because it speaks to the truth that we all long to be brave for the good of those who are victimized. The detailed examples of God's faithfulness are always good to hear, and the stories of real-life humble heroism should be an encouragement to all.

A fresh and honest look at the adventure, freedom, and fear to be found in following Jesus. Great real live examples and practical guidance from Scripture.A passionate call for action to free others and ourselves.

Loved the author's perspective on justice. What it is and why we must work to see everyone receives it. Incredibly challenging but I never felt beat up on or was made to feel guilty. Highly motivating.This is going on my list of must reads for those I lead and those I love.This is the call of Christ.

This was such a great book I sat outside and finished the book in a day. It took off right after the boyfriend agreement but, you didn't have to read it to understand just much better if you did. It was lighter then the BA book and I enjoyed it more. The Disney twists are so subtle I was almost to the end before I made the connection. It is a sweet high school romance and I can't wait for my daughter and students to read it so we can talk about it. If your looking for a fun beach read this is the book for you!

Personally I loved all the hidden Disney gems throughout and often smiled when one stood out. Modern Ariel dives right in and takes the reader on a drama filled journey with love, betrayal, competition, grief and being true to yourself. There were a lot of twists and turns I was not expecting. I look forward to reading more in this series.

Chasing Mermaids by Seven Steps is the second book in the St. Mary's Academy series. It follows Ariel as she is trying to start over after being betrayed by her boyfriend and best friend. While she is shutting him out of her life, she also has to distance herself from her best friend. On top of this drama, Ariel's father has begun to try to mold her into a business executive, while all she wants is to swim competitively, first at nationals and later in the Olympics. When Ariel's sister becomes more distant, it's obvious something is wrong.I liked this book very much. Although it was written for teenagers, I found the characters well developed and easy to relate to. I could definitely empathize with Ariel as her life seems to be falling apart around her. I also found the storyline well thought out and well developed.I definitely would encourage teen girls to read this story. I don't think boys will be as interested, because it focuses more on the girls and the issues they are going through.This is not a stand alone novel. If you have not read The Boyfriend Agreement, you will have a hard time understanding a major part of the book, because a large part of the book continues elements of the story which was begun in the first book in the series.I would really like to read more books in this series. Seven Steps is a wonderful author. She brings her characters to life, focuses on issues that are easily understood, and makes the settings very real.I requested this book from the author with the intention of giving an honest review. This review reflects my honest opinion of the book and is in no way influenced by the author.

St. Mary's Academy Series - I found this series of books on Booksprout.co. I read short stories by Seven before and even though I don't care too much for this age group, I wanted to read her stories and found the series interesting. SS weaves stories that hold the reader's attention. Her realistic and likable characters are in and out of stories since they're all part of the Academy. The books are well written and interesting, considering the age group, and would make good reading for any age group. These mostly standalone books are best read in order, which I found out by reading a shorter one before a much longer story, but the reader isn't lost if not read sequentially. 4*The Beginning of Forever #0 - A well written, interesting but very short introduction to a young girl at her cousin's senior year prom. She experiences several first. 4*The Boyfriend Agreement #1 - A lengthy, but not wordy, book that is interesting, well written and quickly read. Not my favorite of the series. 3*Chasing Mermaids #2 - This book should be read after The Boyfriend Agreement to get the full gist of this story. The main character wants one thing, her parents another and there's more problems in her family and with her best friend and boyfriend. Like with most of the books in this series, there's a range of emotions. 4*The Golden Boy #3 - Another well written novella with interesting characters. The main character finds out about life, truth and consequences the hard way. The Golden Boy is almost too perfect and it's nice to see such a good character. He is the opposite of her, but shows her how to improve herself. 4*Stealing Hearts #4 - Well written, interesting with realistic, likable characters. She's uptown and he's from the other side of the tracks, but their story is full of learning about life and achievement. Be careful of what you ask for, easy is too much trouble. 4*The Secret Lives of Princesses #5 - Another lengthy book who's pages flew by quickly. Another well written, interesting addition to the series that immerses the reader. While the title has the word princess in it, the main character is realistic and likable, and has to decide whether to follow her parents' wishes or her heart's desire. If you liked Ariel's story, you'll like Jasmine's. She has help from an unexpected source. 4*

“A fun, emotional, young adult romance contemporary romance about forgiveness, second chances, and chasing your dreams no matter the cost.”That publisher’s blurb pretty much describes this book perfectly. If you like YA romance and find the blurb appealing you’re pretty much bound to enjoy this book. The heroine here, Ariel, has many challenges, from finding a way to somehow achieve her Olympic goals, despite being thrown off the swim team and parental opposition, to putting her heart at risk for her ex-boyfriend who is so desperate to anything to get her back but who hurt her badly. How she handles all of this makes for a wonderful tale - and one I happily recommend.

I'm a Canadian pharmacist preparing to write the FPGEE to practice in the US. I've only been out of school for a few years but certainly needed a refresher on basic PK/PD principles and pharmacology of major drug classes. I'm absolutely loving this book so far. The PK/PD is explained in very easy to understand terms, and I have a much better grasp of basic pharmacological principles.My only regret is not buying this book sooner when I was in pharmacy school, would have helped immensely preparing for exams. This book has reminded me how much I enjoy the science of pharmacy!
