There are different books to read during different seasons; I read a lot of travel memoirs in the summer and this one was a masterpiece! Bill’s wife leaves him and he loses his job as an English professor around the same time so he decides to take off alone on a road trip around America following what he calls the “blue highways”, roads that are blue on an atlas or essentially country highways. He avoids all expressways. Along the way he meets a host of interesting characters and documents his conversations with them and discusses the various restaurants where he dines; he determined that the more calendars a diner has, the better the food. Whenever I read during quiet time at the daycare, my students always excitedly ask me what is happening in my book. Unfortunately, they got a bit sick of me telling them that Bill was eating again, although I loved his descriptions of diner grub. His visit to a monastery was my favorite section of the book as he documented his conversation with a monk asking him about why he chose that lifestyle. I have an interest in stepping into other people’s shoes and seeing how people live differently in various communities so I found it fascinating. I think this curiosity is one reason I moved to country; I had never lived in the country before.

I love meeting people and I love going places. I'm the kind who, when out and about on an errand or toward a destination, sees a narrow shady road branching off the highway and wonders what's down that road. Moon's book takes me down those roads, introduces me to people I, too, would like to meet. I've recommended this book to so many people--both after my first reading when it first came out (I gave a copy to my husband's grandmother) and again now. I don't know what they're teaching in literature, writing, and culture classes these days--not to mention U.S. history--but I think this book could easily be fit into any of those courses. Book clubs should read it. I so wished I had someone to read it with so that I could share my thoughts on what I was getting out of it. I shared many passages on FB and others with my best friend (Kindle makes it easy). This is a book to read slowly, savoring the skillful writing, the apt descriptions, the colorful characters, the "philosophizing." I loved this book. Can you tell? I'll read it again and again.

Very gritty blue collar snapshot of America in 1982. Least Heat-Moon needed to get away from home in Missouri where his marriage and career were disintegrating so he took this circular trip around the USA to clear his head and in so doing created one of the great travelogues of all time. He's not visiting glamour spots or drinking destinations of the travel brochures. He's down, lost and confused. He wants to see how real people are living and getting on with life and maybe get a clue about his own place in life. And since he's limited himself to the back roads, the blue-lines on the map, he meets mostly blue collars in the little out of the way places. A delightful plus and surprise to me was he took photo snapshots of the people he met and included them in the book. The man has a photographic mind for detail and dialog which got a little overwhelming at times.

If you love this country, and can put his writings from before 1980 in context with today's social climate,you will love the book. It should be read with an atlas close by or, better yet, Google maps. It is richly rewarding to follow on a map or even aerial photograph exactly where the author travels. The interaction and dialog with fascinating people is rewarding. Much has changed in the almost 40 years since "the drive" was made but this only makes the contrast more poignant. A beautifully crafted book.

I first read this book when it came out in 1981 and I was 41 years old. And I loved it. Since then I've read it at least six times including recently. I am now 77 years old. Each time I read it I see things from a different perspective. It's a beautiful book.

If you think you might want to take an American road trip, buy and read this first. If you have no interest in road trips, buy and read this, and see if you don't change your mind. I've given this book as a gift probably half a dozen times...and been enthusiastically thanked later every time. Maybe I pick the right people to receive it, or maybe this book is universally appealing. If you've read it already, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't read it, it's not too late. Over thirty years old now, it's as pertinent today as it ever was.

Very well researched, lots of historical facts. Personally I wish it had a little more on the trip itself, but I realize that wasn't his goal. Very different from Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, yet also similar. Both books get bogged down in philosophical matters I don't care about.

I love to read travelogues. This one is about a circular trip around the United States in a van, in the late 1970s (I think, the 70s. Maybe early 80s). There are descriptions of areas that I looked up on Google Earth and was entertained for hours while following these roadways to see what Least Heat-Moon was seeing. The author is an English major -- a professor, I believe -- and writes with an intellectual wittiness that I much appreciate. This particular book is beginning to age and yellow a bit, which makes me feel a little sad, because this book should definitely be reprinted and kept refreshed for more people to read.

Wow! This book is a must read. Very well written and laid out in such a way that it highlights many unspoken truths in our lives. It challenged me to think about what the end of a being’s life should be; how to have a dignified end to your story with the ability to dictate how you spend your remaining time on earth. There is so much to learn from this book. I highly recommended for everyone to read this insightful, emotional, and empowering book!

This is an excellent, thought-provoking book that will be difficult to put down. Puri's vulnerability and self-awareness shines bright and transports the reader on an emotionally moving journey. The lessons from her parents, teachers and patients help us as they have helped guide her. Add this to your must-read book list!

I just finished reading Ungifted and Superungifted. A friend in book club recommended them. She is a former middle school teacher, and often recommends such books which are fitting for youth and adults both. The gifted and ungifted are not always recognizable, and the definition of gifted may vary from chapter to chapter. It's a great enjoyable read that allowable reader to look at things from citywide and still be unsure what is what in the gifted and ungifted department.

Supergifted picks up right where Ungifted leaves off, with Noah getting kicked out of the Academy and having to go to “regular” school with Donovan. The character development, especially of Noah, is fabulous. The way things are phrased is often very funny. My 10- and 12-year-old boys absolutely loved the book (and I enjoyed it, too). I highly recommend it to middle grade age kids. It makes a great family read-aloud, too!

We enjoyed "gifted" very much and were eager to write the sequel- unfortunately, it was so frustrating! Every element was so annoying- the plot, character development- one of the first books we ever put down halfway through and won't finish! We normally love Korman (Swindle, On the Run, the Macdonald Hall series, no more dead dogs, masterminds- all great!!) but this was just bad.

I really got a kick out of this sequel. Supergifted Noah's joyful adventures in finding what he's NOT good at are hilarious. It's worth reading just for the cheerleading scenes but there's much more.

Again, daughter loves this author! I think she has read close to every book of his!

In this sequel to "Ungifted," Donovan finds himself back at Hardcastle Middle School. But this time, Noah Youkilis, owner of the district's highest IQ, is also at Hardcastle. Noah is brilliant -- but has no common sense or physical abilities. Noah's view of how the real world works has come through a rather random look at YouTube.Donovan appoints himself Noah's protector, but circumstances seem to continually work against Donovan. When Donovan is (again) in the wrong place at the right time, his world is flipped upsidedown. And Donovan thinks there isn't anything he can do about it. Donovan seems doomed to live out his life moving from one disaster to another. Is there anything to be done?I loved this book. Gordon Korman gets into the middle school boy mind better than any author out there. Donovan a typical middle school boy in that he moves from incident to incident with no thought -- he spends his life reacting. I will be recommending this book a lot!

I love this book! You will definitely laugh and more than several times! I even laughed out loud! The true stories aren’t all funny as you will see if you read this. Very emotional ending. I hope there are other books written by this author but something tells me there might not be any more. Wonderful book. I’m so glad I read it. I forget a lot (most) of the books I have read over these many years but I won’t forget this one.

This was the funniest book ever—-and the most tragic—-for one doctor, many patients and their families and most especially for a doomed and dangerous healthcare delivery system. United States politicians who tout a one-payer system would be well served to read this book and then tape their mouths and votes shut with duct tape. This is a must read book!

This is a fantastic book, and maybe a pre-requisite lecture for any of the future Health Secretaries. Doctors give so much, and ask back for so little, and even that little is many times denied. I have laughed while reading the book, but in the same time it broke my heart to see yhe tragedy underneath the words. Spouses leaving with no spouse present, kids growing up with one of the parents constantly missing in their life. The system can ignore the problems, and contonue pushing for more hours from the doctors, for more cost-cutting measures, but when most of the doctors will be gone (because they are merely mortals, and not Gods), who will take care of patients? You can almost call it the "Chinese Cultural Revolution" of the NHS. Let's hope they will not have to bring in high-schoolers to do the surgeries

Wow! Laugh 'til it hurts...and then the horrible punch line. The book doesn't inspire confidence in the British health system, although America treats its interns very badly, too.But this is a funny, funny writer...until he can't be funny writing this story any more.

I too am a doctor, albeit in a different country. What Alan went through appears to cross all borders and i can identify with so much of what he writes about. Humour is the only way to get through it. And the camaraderie.The saddest of all is that the public see us as money grabbing mean people! Really?Thanks Alan for sharing this journey. More people need to read it.

I saw the tip from John Niven: "You need to read this".Who? I dont' think I know the author? Really? OK then...Like with many great books, there's comedy (lots) as well as tragedy. The book starts off with a diary of short, dry, if rather hilarious, descriptions of the situations a junior NHS doctor -the author in a previous life- finds himself in. I read the first half gasping for breath, laughing way too hard, wanting to instantly tell the jokes to my wife, but suspected she might frown at being nudged at 4:00 AM to hear a placenta joke.But from behind the sarcasm I started to see the dedication and care - despite the sometimes bone-dry insanely funny descriptions of mishaps and human silliness. The hilarious bits are still there, yet there's another narrative coming to the front, with first hinted at, and then more open, drama. It's weird to almost feel guilty about laughing so hard when you fully start to grasp the background and even, yes, message. An ending that, if you have a heart, will make sure it will be ripped right out - which is pretty much in sync with the rest of the stories where things get ripped, gently or less so, from human bodies.No spoilers, but maybe, what hurts most, is realizing the author no longer practices medicine today, and that this, despite the seemingly cynical descriptions of bodily functions-and-parts going pear shaped (baby heads, often...), is probably a damn shame. Then again, this book wouldn't exist if that was the case.I finished this book at 5:30 AM the next day, surprised that it made me emotional the way it did. ("Woke", I think the more youthful reader might call it.) Anyway, unless you are planning to have a baby in the next year or so (and even then... there's quite a bit of useful information, but it might slightly put you off) you have to read this for yourself. You may need stitches though!

A laugh out loud book as well as a peek into the unusual private habits of the human race. I have seen similar things while working in Law Enforcement. 50% of people are just stupid or weird. This guy is a saint. A good read in any case. Government health care turns good doctors into slaves and allows bad ones to have job security. Do you want to have surgery from a person who has been awake for 30 hours straight? Not me.This would have been a four star if it had not been for the medical jargon and British colloquial phrases. The Doctor included a lot of numbered notations that are in the back of the book. However, with an Kindle book you know how impossible that is to go back and forth without losing your place.

I picked this for my book club last month and loved it. We have a bad habit of not finishing the books we pick (at least, some of us)! So I picked this because it seemed it would be easy to pick up and put down, not requiring a huge time commitment on any given day. I was right. It's easy to read and because it's a series of journal entries, you don't necessarily have to read every entry in the middle. Did everyone read it? No. But most of us at least read some of it! I read the whole thing and was impressed by the wit and humor on every page. There was a sense of continuity, even if it's journal entries.I would highly recommend this book to anyone that can grab short snippets of time to read or that has a book club with a problem finishing their books! And for anyone that has a sense of humor with a side of empathy. Also, we have a couple pregnant women in our club, and a couple moms, and they were not freaked out upon reading this book full of gynecology stories. It's safe for everyone!

I fully endorse the existing feedback "This book is a Clear and Straight forward guide for this exam with good and simple examples to try out." and this is true for all the study guides written by Matthew M Morris.

Concise and to the point book about the new features of Oracle 12c. The book can also be used to refresh your Oracle 11g new features knowledge and overall daily DBA tasks. Comparatively, few new features were added in 12c compared to the pervious Oracle editions. As I have shifted to SQL Server DBA jobs in the past 3 years, this book helped me to refresh the new features of Oracle 11g material which I went through to prepare for Oracle 11g OCP upgrade exam. Thanks Matthew.

This is not a good book for exam preparation. Not recommend.

I read it to the half so far and enjoyed the information and details as a study guide, it does not contain all details you need from every asect or new feature but it points you on the right direction. Overall I liked it exactly as the name says, a study guide to give an overall of the new features and in some of them it gets deeper, and on the others it only gives a breaf explanation. I recommend as a complement, but you should look for more sources and practice to pass the exam I suppose.

The sections on Core DBA definitely prepares you for the exam questions, as the questions for that section can be from a wide range of information.

What can I say? Concise and to the point.

I highly recommend this book.I upgraded my OCP (certificate) to 12c by reading this book. Several years ago, I upgraded my OCP to 11g by reading the corresponding book ("Study Guide for 1Z0-050" by the same author). Why have I continued coming back to buy this series of books? Because they are short and sweet. Well, not exactly SHORT, but this book is less than half size of other books with the similar title. Admittedly we are all too busy nowadays, and there are too many other more interesting things to do in our lives than studying for certification. My goal is to spend less efforts to get more results. If it's your goal too, this book is for you.I would say this book contains about 85% of the answers for test questions in a systematic way. Of course it's not enough to just depend on this book alone (or any other ONE book alone). You need to cross reference Oracle documents, Google related info, experiment in your database, practice test simulator, and so on. But I found myself spent more time on this book than any other resources. From my experience, this book has one of the highest ROI (Return Of Investment) -- in terms of my time (not to mention the money).

This book is an excellent guide to prepare for 12c ocp upgrade certification exam .however it cover only 12c upgrade portion only and one need to refer to other book for general DBA part preparation

Alissa Perrucci's book is an invaluable resource for the counseling, family planning, and reproductive justice community. She thoughtfully weaves clinical evidence with demonstrative examples and constructive exercises. As a nurse practitioner with a background in counseling, I found the book to be both a succinct review of the principles of good counseling, as well as a concise framework for assessing patients needs and assisting them through their decision-making process. The book contains excellent tools to help counselors clarify their personal values, as a means to prevent them from interfering with the delicate skill of supportive, nonjudgmental counseling. I am so happy to add this book to my library as a critical resource for options counseling, abortion care and women's health.

Dr. Perrucci has written an invaluable book. The frameworks she builds for exploring a patient's belief systems focuses on the important work of abortion counseling but also transcends to all discussions health care providers have with patients making difficult choices: chemo or surgery? Hospice or treatment? At its core, this book is about helping the provider become a guide for the patient, allowing her space to tell her story, voice and resolve conflict, ensure her support throughout her decision.The beauty of this book is that it truly demystifies the process of supporting the patient. She literally walks you through exercises that break down different levels on which to respond to a patient when she has emotional, spiritual or moral concerns about her decision. Shortly after finishing this book, I had a patient come in for a follow up appointment after her abortion and she started to cry. Instead of just saying comforting words and offering her a tissue, as I previously would have done, I now had the tools to explore her feeling with her, the origins of her feelings and consequently was able to help reframe her vision of herself as a good person who made a moral decision that was the best for her and her family. That is the power of this book; it is a tool to help women see the difficult choices they make as moral choices and themselves as good people. In a highly contentious political landscape rife with shaming women who have had abortions, this is an incredibly powerful transformation.An unexpected gift of this book is helping me reframe my own work as an OBGYN in training and a future abortion provider. In the first chapters of the book, Dr. Perrucci discusses the importance of saying the word "abortion." Not "the procedure," not dancing around it, but "abortion," in the same tone which you would say "contraception" or "cholecystectomy." Normalizing this procedure, which is one of the most common for women in the US, is incredibly important and powerful for us as providers as well. Another powerful aspect of this book for me was the opportunity to examine our own biases as providers. What do you think about an abortion for a fatal anomaly? Does that change if it's not? If the patient is a teen? A mom? If she declines contraception afterwards? The options we offer in our clinics, from abortion, to parenting, and all array of contraception - including none! -- are really important to authentically offer if we are to be true champions of choice. This book offers a robust toolkit for examining all of these dimensions with the patient as our focus.

As a primary healthcare provider for women, this book has helped me tremendously. Certainly, it has transformed my counseling of women and adolescents with unintended pregnancies. Rather than presenting positive results apprehensively, I now find myself doing so confidently, methodically, feeling open and thoroughly supporting women's diverse decisions (including those I would not make myself and had been lukewarm about before reading this). When I began reading, I had already spent a decade professionally providing health counseling and doubted I could improve much, though I was interested in the topic. To my chagrin, the book made plain my hidden biases and counseling shortcomings and taught me how to deal with them so that I could better serve my patients. Considering that half of all pregnancies in the U.S.--and even more than that among my underserved patients--are unintended, this book is essential for all healthcare providers serving women. It is thoroughly engaging with case studies that exemplify phrasing and nuanced counseling strategies, comprehensively researched, illuminating about the informed consent process for all medical decisions, and cuts through the social stigma surrounding abortion while reckoning with the reality of the experience of stigma. Unexpectedly, it has vastly strengthened my ability to engage in shared decision-making with patients facing difficult medical choices of all sorts. I was so grateful I had read the chapter on Decision Assessment the same week that a woman in her 50's presented with abnormal heart sounds after not taking her regular heart medications. Using the counseling techniques Dr. Perrucci masterfully presents in that chapter, I felt I could more actively listen to the patient's circumstances, allow her to cry when she realized the seriousness of the situation, and better prepare her for the life change and series of decisions her new symptoms would likely necessitate. She was ultimately diagnosed with congestive heart failure in the emergency department (where I'd sent her). When she returned the following week with her family, we were both much more prepared to face the medical challenges ahead due to the counseling groundwork we'd already begun. This effect of reading this book was unexpected but not surprising: Dr. Perrucci's book is profoundly insightful, instructive and its many nuanced lessons transform situations that would otherwise be excruciating for patient and provider alike into cathartic, pivotal and often rewarding healthcare partnerships. This is a counseling reference to which I will undoubtedly turn for the rest of my career.

Such a wonderful start to a new series from Susi Hawke! It pulled me in immediately and had me riveted til the end! Don't want to give anything away but suffice it to say that you will totally love this book!

Susi Hawke 's new book Healing Choice about Tobias a Few who is given a chance to find his heartsong in the human realm and Caleb a wolf shifter. Old friends from the Legacy saga Saga make brief cameos. This book is a great start to a new series. Great secondary characters.

Loved this books and cant wait to find out what happens next in this new series. Susi Hawke has another hit on her hands.

I loved this book...!I found myself tearing up through parts of it, and smiling through others. The fae world was amazing, and I hope that there is more planned in this amazing new place.

Picking up from where the Legacy Warrior series ended, Healing Choice introduces the Fae searching for their heartsong mate. Tobias is charged with finding Caleb and having him falling in love without the use of majick within 30 days. Their journey to love is truly touching and ends up changing Caleb's fate. Susi Hawke's trademark humor is sprinkled throughout and makes the story more than entertaining. I can't wait for the next book to see what she dreams up next.

This was a great start to a new series. Like the Legacy books, there’s the fated mate scenario, but this one includes a Fae partner, which was fun. (My only question: if you can majick your way out of nearly anything, why go through physical labor?) I’m looking forward to the next installment, and am wondering if we’ve already met one of the characters that will be featured...perhaps one of Tobias’s brothers?
