It's funny and spot-on advice for recent graduates. Unfortunately, it's closer to 40 pages than the advertised 64 pages. And that includes full-page cartoons. It's a 10-minute read for the profoundly dyslexic. This could have been a pamphlet instead of a book. Frankly, it could have been a one-page editorial in a newspaper.
Dave Barry, Carl Hiaasen's longtime friend and colleague, once described him as being "somewhat cynical in the same way we would say that the universe is somewhat large". These tendencies are on display in "Assume the Worst", written by Hiaasen and illustrated by Roz Chast. How much you enjoy this little book depends on where you fall on the cynic-realist-optimist spectrum. I loved it, and have re-read three times in the days since I received it in the mail. The insights are sharp, and a much-needed rejoinder to the pablum served up at many graduation ceremonies. The pairing with Chast is inspired; my favorite is her graph of expectations versus age. This is not to say that the perspective is always on point. For example, in describing how we have treated each other Hiaasen says that "we torment and slaughter just as wantonly - and with record body counts". Writers such as Stephen Pinker The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined have shown that we are actually are killing each other much less than we have in the past, some kind of progress... My guess is that Carl Hiaasen is a deeply-disappointed optimist, who cares a great deal about the future of humanity, and is frustrated by the state of affairs. I recommend this book for any long-time Hiaasen fans, and anyone with soon-to be-graduating college age kids that need wising up.
The truth. Unvarnished. Ugly, and yet beautiful. Absurd and profound. Tear inducing and belly laugh causing. All at once.Read it.Absorb it.Live it.
ASSUME THE WORST: THE GRADUATION SPEECH YOU’LL NEVER HEAR by Carl Hiaasen, with illustrations by Roz Chast, is a hilarious and very touching essay.I could copy the entire essay with my underlinings and notes. Some of my favorite notes are:“Force yourself to experiment with kindness, even when the impulse eludes you.â€â€œCorruption is another dreary fact of life, and the worst scoundrels are often likable and smooth. Try not to fall for their act. From the local zoning board to the halls of Congress, your mistrust will seldom be misplaced.†(Cynic that I am, this is my favorite quote.)A wonderful graduation ‘speech’ - one everyone should hear and adhere to, no matter one’s age.
Classic Carl Hiaasen wit, humor, and wisdom. We thoroughly enjoyed reading this short take on the present world and how to deal with it. Thank you Carl!
Hilariously spot on but I can’t believe I paid $8.99 for a digital download of 64 pages
Just loved it!It summarizes us in such definite, easy to understand and sobering terms! And it brings us down to Earth from our aspirational heaven.I especially liked the portion where we confuse technology with evolution! Just the opposite is true. Will read it again and again!
meh... I love Hiaasen - both his novels and his selections of columns, but this isn't worth the few bucks. This is basically a column stretched with pictures into a very, very short book. Literally there are pages in which there are two sentences with healthy margins. It was cheap, but not a book wasn't the ideal format for such a piece. Would have read well in a magazine as the content was funny enough but I blew through the entire thing in about ten minutes with pauses for the pictures.
