This book is about the psychology of potential or ongoing partnerships. It has good questionnaires for evaluating the people involved and how well the business may work with two 'chiefs', such as in how to split the responsibilities and ensure communications. The book does not get into the areas I needed such as assessing financials cost- or profit-sharing, unequal investment, or coordinating building inventory or marketing products or how to divide costs and impacts of other factors affecting the bottom line.
I am a business attorney who has been practicing law for over 25 years. My law firm, Walker & Chambers – Attorneys and Counselors at Law has been representing small to mid-size business in Texas for over 21 years. In my years of practice, I have been involved in the structuring, negotiating, and setting up of numerous business partnerships. I have also seen the worst of what happens when partners fail to get along, and thus fall out of favor with each other. The consequences of a failed business partnership are immeasurable.About a year ago, I read the first edition of Dr. Dorene Lehavi’s book “Business Partnership Essentials: A Step-by-Step Action Plan for Succeeding in Business With a Partnerâ€. Now, the second edition is even better! I have a partnership in a Real estate company and have other partnerships in Real estate Investments. Business Partnership essentials should be required when starting a business partnership. I have seen many partnerships fall apart in real estate with all parties being financially and emotionally damaged. It's so east to get into a partnership and very difficult to get out if it is not planned properly. Your partnership agreement should be your business pre-nup! Create it when all parties are happy and use it when disagreements occur. It's much easier to refer to your document than to call in the attorneys. Based on her experience counseling many troubled partnerships, she's able to identify the landmines that you can avoid. A great and quick read.
I recently read the Business Partnership Essentials for the second time and I found it just as stimulating as the first time I read it months ago. The suggestions Ms. Lehavi presents for success in a business partnership are so true. I have experienced a number of failures in partnerships I have undertaken over the course of years.
