It walks you through the history of the town, the people that lived there, the struggles of survival, and the tragedy that occurred to a Farmerand his family both on and near the Old Alton Bridge which became known as The GoatMan's Bridge. Read and learn how the history relates to the current day paranormal activities that have been experienced there making this one of the most haunted bridges in the country. I really enjoyed reading about the investigations and the things that have happened and was amazed at the pictures and evidence the author provided within the book. It definitely puts this bridge as a place to visit on my to do list. If you like the Paranormal, you'll love this book!

I grew up a few miles from the bridge and remember driving down there with friends late at night to catch a glimpse of the wicked goatman who haunts the area. It was interesting reading about the true history of the people who lived in the small town and discovering what really happened there so long ago. There is so much more to the story of Goatman's Bridge than what I knew as a kid. The evil that lurks there is more sinister than I could have imagined! Charles Willeford lived the life to which all red blooded American youths aspire. Running away from home at 13 so that his grandmother would not have to feed him, he rode the rails as a hobo for three years of the Great Depression, working as a cowboy and a prize fighter, among other things, to feed himself. He bluffed his way into the Army at 16 where he found a home, earning a chestful of medals in Patton's Third Army during World War II before ending his days as a highly respected journalist, best selling novelist, film maker, college professor and actor (I think I missed a few occupations in there).It is as a writer that he is remembered. There is a depth to his mysteries, a creepy realism to his sociopaths, a combination of Flannery O'Connor's gothic loopiness narrated in a just the facts straight man prose of Walker Percy. In my opinion, his Burnt Orange Heresy is not just an engaging mystery and a deeply comic tale, but one of the greatest critiques - and THE greatest satire - of modern art ever written.Don Herron was very lucky to have met such a man and made him his friend, but Charles Willeford was even luckier to have made a friend who could write such a skilled biography. The closest thing I can compare this to is Boswell's life of Johnson. Like Boswell, Herron is more focused on introducing his readers to the personality than to find every last dry fact to cram into the book. The result is that Willeford lives in these pages far more than the subject lives in most biographies.There are three sections t the book. The first and longest is Willeford's life in a series of vignettes, ranging from running a radio station for the Air Force to editing Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. You don't get much about the subject matter of Willeford's autobiographies because you can (and should) read Willeford himself on those stages of his life. What you do get is a very complete picture of what Willeford must have beenlike.The second section just consists f transcribed tapes of Herron and Willeford and assorted friends and spouses hangng around chewing the fat during Herron's visit to Willeford in Miami to help clean out Willeford's garage and if that sounds dull, you don't know Willeford nor what Herron can do with such material.The final section is a bibliography of Willeford's works, together with all the titles and editions, a very important thing to have if you want to follow Willeford given the fact that publishers tended to slap a new title on each new edition of Willeford's books. I almost bought two copies of the same book until I referred to Mr. Herron's bibliography. I saved the cost of this book on just that transaction alone.This is one of the great modern biographies, capturing as it does, the structure of a man's life, his soul and the great friendship ne had with a terrific biographer.

This is the only real bio of Willeford available, but considering it's the gold standard, it isn't necessary for someone to write another bio of the brilliant writer. Don Herron (in addition to running the Dashiell Hammett tour in San Francisco) was a personal friend of Charles Willeford, which gives this book the intimate, "inside baseball" feel you're not going to get from any other source (except, perhaps Willeford's widow, Betsy Willeford). Everything one could want to know about Willeford is here, from his stint in the army, to his poetry, to his slaving in the pulp trenches during the "Black Mask" years, and his eventual "rock star" treatment (in the words of Stephen King). Herron has a spare, unpretentious style reminiscent of Howard Sounes (another skilled biographer), and he leaves no stone unturned, no facet of the author's oeuvre unplumbed. Highest Recommendation.Also check out Herron's "Dark Barbarian," one of the only books about the fantasy maestro Robert E. Howard that is worth a darn, aside from Mark Finn's "Blood and Thunder."

Very interesting behind the scenes look at Charles Willeford's life from a close friend of his and successful writer in his own right, Herron.Points back to Willefords early life but focuses mostly on his later years and especially when he was living in Miami. Nice to learn about his interactions with Elmore Leonard and other aspects of his adult personal life.

This book is a must for any fan of Charles Willeford's books and writing. Author Don Herron actually met and got to know Willeford during the latter's lifetime, and the book is as much a memoir of how Herron came to discover and appreciate this little known literary crime writer as it is a conventional biography/bibliography/critique of Willeford. I first read it at about the same time I was discovering Willeford's Hoke Moseley series, which are marvelous stories about a middle aged Miami cop's confused personal life intertwined with his encounters with some very memorable pyschopaths. Herron's book gave some great insights into Willeford's creative processes during the creation of Hoke and other works and gradually shows how Willeford came to be such a powerful storyteller.My own recommendation is to purchase this book even if you've not discovered Willeford, as Herron is a pretty good storyteller in his own right. I'm certain that after reading this work you'll want to check out CW's titles. Of course, for the long time fan of Willeford this book is the answer to most questions you may have had.A definite 5 stars.

If you're a Willeford addict (and Lord knows he is addictive), this book is an indispensible addition to your collection. Although he discovered Willeford late (like a lot of us), Herron is truly an insider who hung out with the man, collaborated with him, and had access to his private letters and archived files.There's so much Willeford minutiae here that it's like a reference book. There's also an incredibly long taped conversation with Willeford, among friends at home. The book also includes the most extensive Willeford bibliography I've seen.Thank you, Don Herron!

In my opinion, they're wrong, this is a five star book, it's just that ... and the Noisy Problem is probably a six star book. It has the same Chico Bon Bon using deductive reasoning to identify a problem and then come up with a win win solution to it. I believe I have all of them and am more than happy to read them to my young son (they give me an opportunity to make goofy noises) for the very reason stated above. You don't have to be a Tool Guy (or Gal) to appreciate this book. Though it helps. As a role model, I appreciate that Chico, even though he was an opinion about the person who created the problem, keeps it to himself in order to create a positive atmosphere when he suggests his solution. Thus making acceptance of his solution possible. Smart Monkey. Unlike Lucy, or Jimmy Neutron, Chico never creates the problem that has to be solved. Yet through his creative thinking finds it anyway.

I saw these books in a magazine and thought that our 2 year old grandson would like them. He loved them and carries them around saying, "Mine", all the time. I got the set of 3 from Amazon and had them shipped directly to Charlie in Stevens Point, WI where Charlie is being raised on a cattle farm by a very wonderful Dad(and Mom) who teach their children about everything in wonderful ways. The books gave the parents and child many hours of discussing tools and how they are used. Remember, I said he is 2 years old!! Good learning and fun books are great gifts. P.S. He won't let his big brother touch them! Amazon can get you anything!!

My 3 year old LOVE LOVES reading this and with all the silly tools in it. It is cute and clever and yet is enjoyable for the adult doing the reading. I look forward to this imaginative, well-written, witty treasures whereas some books my toddler likes are DREAD-worthy. Plus, each of the Chico Bon Bon adventures has at least one page of ENTIRE huge illustrations you could look at for days (think FIND WALDO) with so much going on. I'd say the original with the organ grinder is my son's favorite but this one is second. You can't go wrong with this. Just a beautiful book.

If you love Chico Bon Bon (the Monkey with a Toolbelt), you'll enjoy his latest adventure in this book. If you aren't familiar with this clever little guy yet, be sure to order all 3 of his adventures -- you won't regret it! (Monkey with a Toolbelt; Monkey with a Toolbelt and the Noisy Problem; and Monkey with a Toolbelt and the Seaside Shenanigans).Chris Monroe's writing style brings to mind the best of Richard Scarry and Dr. Seuss, while adding another element all her own, making these Monkey books our family's very favorite of all children's literature.

"Noisy Problem" is a favorite in our house, so I purchased this one prior to a family beach vacation. "Seaside Shenanigans" is just okay. It doesn't have the rhythm and pulse that makes "Noisy Problem" wonderful to read out loud over and over and over. My recommendation is to borrow from the library to make sure you like it before buying "Seaside Shenanigans." If you don't have any "Monkey" books yet, buy "Noisy Problem!"

My grandson loves this series. We have read this book this summer and it was a hit. He is particularly enamored with tools.

I got this book for a couple little boys I babysit (age 2 and 5) because after I had checked it out from the library and subsequently returned it, they kept asking to read about Chico Bon Bon. I gave them the set of three for Christmas and it was a hit. Cute book with detailed illustrations that make it fun to read/look at again and again.
