We've used this for a few years, but packed it away somewhere. Couldn't wait for it to show up so got a second copy. We use it every time we hike. Highly recommend it. First book you look at when you want to get your boots on the trail.

It has all the basic informaiton in it, but the writing is often vague and incomplete.

I think you need to know what you are getting in this book - it's a great book if you have kids that you are getting into 'hiking' with, and who don't have a lot of stamina. I almost feel that if it were titled differently, they would have better reviews and people wouldn't feel like it should have been something more. I would title this book "Best Easy Hikes for Families" maybe, and I think it would hit the mark. Most of the "hikes" are big walks in nature - yes, some elevations, but very do-able for just about anyone. Sometimes it's just a leg-stretch to get out of the car too. So, if you are in the market for a book that gets you some neat things to see outside while you intro your family to the world of the outdoors, I actually think it's a brilliant book. If you are looking for half-day hikes, there are other books that will serve you better. (See my blog for more reviews).

I was very disappointed in this guidebook. The pictures and descriptions of hikes were muddy, and the selection of hikes limited to just the very easiest. My wife and I are in our 40's and not in the best of shape, but we wanted more challenging and beautiful options than were listed in this book. This book might be OK for those who are truly limited in hiking ability -- say, no more than 4-5 miles and very limited elevation changes. We bought this and "Day Hiking North Cascades" by Craig Romano Day Hiking North Cascades: Mount Baker, Mountain Loop Highway, San Juan Islands hoping one or the other would be a winner -- and Romano's book hit the mark while this one, "Best Short Hike" missed.

Another excellent issue. I particularly liked Peter Enfantino's affectionate review of the Magazine of Horror and his summaries of a a digest I had never heard of called "Justice Amazing Detective Mysteries." These reviews remind me of the great work of Richard and Everett Bleiler - the bibliographers who actually read every science fiction digest in the 20s and 30s and provided a guide to mostly what to avoid. The only criticism I have of the magazine is that although the fiction pieces were good, but I would concentrate more on non-fiction.

Another interesting issue of this niche publication for enthusiasts of digest format publication, new and old. Mystery (especially Ellery Queen) and Hoor are the focus of this issue, with review and synopses of classics (especially from the 50s) and new fiction stories as well. If you have fond memories of these classic newsstand digests--and especially if you're a collector--you will enjoy this seies.

I have the 6th edition of Janet Burroway's Writing Fiction, bought used since it's a college textbook and thus more expensive than you'd expect. When I noticed the 10th edition listed in upcoming books here on Amazon, and at a cheaper price, I was intrigued. The contents of the book are mostly the same, with some small shifting of topics between chapters, but the major differences are paper type (this edition uses a thicker paper you more commonly see with trade paperback books rather than the thinner paper you'd find in a college text) and the lack of actual stories found in the previous editions. In their place are lists of stories at the end of each chapter. Overall the content is there and probably just as good as before, but you are on your own in hunting down the example stories.
