Excellent book. I usually prefer the O'Reily series but thIs book contains a lot of the information needed to know on a high-mid to senior level knowledge of the language. Highly recommended to any objective c developer looking to learn the "advance" parts of objective c. Covers details like multithreading, blocks, web services, etc.

Great so far. There are allot of things that are good general review.Others are those little things that will make your code better like having private properties, all the diff options for protocols.Clear definitions on categories, extensions, when to use what and the differences each gives you.

Good book! Some nice points

Quite a good book. I've been programming in Objective-C for many years, and I still found things in this book that I didn't know. I'm not sure whether it would be a good introduction for beginners, since I am not a beginner myself and have trouble putting myself in those shoes. But for people who have done at least a little playing around in Obj-C, this book should open up new horizons. The breadth of the topics covered is vast: the Objective-C language and runtime, much (all?) of Foundation (but not AppKit), plus some coverage of Xcode as well. Understandably, then, the book is quite long, and yet still gives just a single-sentence mention to some entire classes. I think that's good, though; the author has done a good job of prioritizing the content, going into a fair bit of depth on topics that are interesting and important, while just mentioning the existence of many other things so you know they are there if you need them. There are errors, both typographical and factual, but they are not major; none derailed me. There are places where the book is a little brief and confusing; I found the chapter on blocks to be particularly unhelpful. I would have given the book only four stars, for these reasons; but the author earned the last star back. I emailed him with some questions about blocks, and he replied within a day with a substantial and helpful response. Twice. So, five stars, although the book could use a pass over it by a good editor.

I am not sure if the other reader downloaded the book. I did skim it for 5 minutes and information looks valuable. If I get a chance I will update my review.

The kindle sample tells me less than the amazon listing page. The sample includes no content. Nothing. Only a table of contents. Waste of time. Still can't tell if I would want to buy it or not from that. Sigh....

A deep dive into the Objective/C language. Written for old version of Xcode but still east to follow up. Will recommend to anyone looking for some advanced stuff regarding this lang.

I purchased this book because I love Valenti's writing, and I was excited for a book that's published goal was to help explain and understand what it means to grow up under the constant stress of objectification. The first 1/2-2/3 of the book is a very interesting study of this. But, once she brings her experience as a mother into the picture, the tone and shape of the narrative change completely and I was unable to understand where the book was going or why it had abruptly stopped making sense to me.Despite it sort of falling apart for me, I do think that this is the most important line I have ever read in a work of non-fiction:"We know that direct violence causes trauma; we have shelters, counsellors, services. We know that children who live in violent neighborhoods are more likely to develop PTSD. Yet we still have no name for what happens to women living in a culture that hates them."A valuable read, yes, but not the best structure

This is a remarkable memoir. She could have made herself sound a lot neater, a lot tidier, and made the whole thing more comfortable. This is a messy, raw, real, honest book. This is not a memoir composed of either self-mythologizing or pat storytelling. In fact, it is as little about the author herself as a memoir of its kind can be. Rather, it is a memoir about how the personal is political, one that is grounded in a sometimes startlingly unvarnished honesty about the personal. It's about sex and sexuality, about women in the world and the things that go unsaid about that experience, and about a lot of other things, too. I've read her other books and her columns appear in my social media feeds and I'm a fan. But this is something else, something deeper, more unsettling and engaging than anything that has come before. This is an important book.

I'm having a hard time putting into words what this book meant to me. I've been a fan of Valenti's for a very long time and I've read and own everything she's written. This is something so different. As a memoir, it's deeply personal and introspective, but the writing style is very different. Valenti is a great academic writer, but she's also just a great writer, full stop. Her style is fluid and honestly, just really beautiful. This book is amazing. Highly recommend to any fan of Valenti's, feminist and non-fiction readers, and lovers of memoirs.

This was an incredibly honest and brave memoir, but the book description made it sound like there would be more analysis and social commentary than there ended up being. I expected more of that from an author who's been "leading the national conversation on gender and politics." The memoir itself was interesting and shockingly honest; I was just hoping for a little less storytelling and a little more examination. That notwithstanding, it's still an important read for anyone who wants to better understand the kinds of scenarios and situations many women have to endure on a regular basis.

I absolutely loved this memoir by Jessica Valenti. She has been an essential voice in my journey into and through feminism, but this book was so much more important to me than any of her others. The themes surrounding collective trauma were very original to me.

From the time we are born to the time we are grown, we are dressed in pink; our hair places into the most perfect pigtails; and heels are placed on our feet in place of combat boots, as if the life of a woman isn't one long war zone. Jessica Valenti again brilliantly illustrates how the life of a woman is simultaneously a place of victimhood and victory. This needs to be read by EVERYONE.

It's as interesting read for a memoir. This author is not scared to lay it all out on the table. It takes courage to speak out the way she did about some of the things that women go through and don't talk about. People go through things and often suppress it but she didn't and I respect that. I know she had written other books and I will probably end up reading another.

Just a string of disconnected stories, mostly about all the drugs the author did and people she hooked up with. Perhaps I missed the point, but I fail to see how this connects to the feminist movement or explores the purported topic of sexual objectification in any new or valuable way.

Ana Pauker: The Rise and Fall of a Jewish Communist

From Publishers Weekly

Virtually unknown internationally today, Pauker appeared on a 1948 Time cover, described inside as "the most powerful woman alive." In Romania, she's remembered as a dogmatic, fanatically subservient Stalinist, emblematic of the terror and repression of the 1947-1952 period in which she served as foreign minister and more briefly as de facto behind-the-scenes leader. Levy easily refutes this image, since Pauker was purged on Stalin's urging precisely for being too soft. What's more difficult is to discover who she really was. Levy concisely describes the recurrent, historically precarious position of European Jews as social pioneers eventually viciously displaced as "parasites" a pattern repeated with revolutionaries like Pauker. Though ultimately unsuccessful in avoiding this fate, she displayed high levels of historical self-awareness, acting in often surprising ways. The central chapters explore her roles in agriculture, party purges and Jewish emigration, which provoked the major accusations against her. As agriculture secretary she opposed forced collectivization and supported higher prices for agricultural products; as a party leader, she opposed the purge of popular leader Lucretiu Patrascanu and the foreign, disproportionately Jewish veterans of the Spanish Civil War and the French Resistance, while her complex relations to her Jewish heritage, identity and compatriots were typically demonized by the anti-Semitism that doomed her. Though Pauker the person remains enigmatic, the political figure's complexities and contradictions, as portrayed by Levy, belie the caricature her homeland clings to, and challenge simplistic notions of the Cold War's darkest hours. 20 b&w photos, 1 map. From Booklist

In his introduction, Levy describes Ana Pauker as "the daughter of poor religious Jews rising to the pinnacle of power in a country traditionally disdainful of both Jews and women." Officially Romania's foreign minister from 1947 to 1952--the first woman to hold such a post--Pauker was actually the unofficial head of Romania's Communist Party after World War II, and for a number of years she was the country's true behind-the-scenes leader. Levy examines Pauker's life and career; the evidence reveals a person characterized more by contradictions than by dogmatism, a Communist leader fanatically loyal to Stalin and the Soviet Union but actively opposing the Stalinist line and deliberately defying Soviet directives on a number of important issues. The remainder of the study covers her years in power and subsequent purge. The book will be of interest to students of the history of communism in Eastern Europe and of one of its most important figures. George CohenCopyright © American Library Association. well researched

"I don't need their rehabilitation," Ana Pauker asserted upon her release from Stalinist prison in Romania. "History will rehabilitate me." Thanks to Robert Levy's biography, history finally came around.Levy here provides the necessary human touch so largely lacking in the historiography and polemical literature on Communist East Europe. Levy reveals what anyone with decency and common sense should have known all along: that dissident intellectuals like the Paukers engaged the Communist movement as a fulfillment of their idealism, not its denial. This is hard to square with the stereotyped Stalinist apparatchik, loving only power, squelching all human values in himself and others as he persecutes "real" dissidents and unbelievers. Levy shows that the contradiction was strongly felt by many of these apparatchiki - even one who allegedly kept her umbrella handy in Bucharest, in case it rained in Moscow. But no harder to comprehend than a bishop staying loyal to his Catholic Church, in spite of pederast priests; or a banker still believing in the virtue of the free market even after the rupturing pederasty of Wall Street. (Or, for that matter, the insistent blank check given to Israel by Washington as a reward for being a liberal democracy, in spite of overwhelming evidence otherwise.)Levy shows how Communism for the Paukers was a way of overcoming the narrow horizons of Orthodox Jewry, and the even narrower limitations imposed by European anti-Semitism. They were "avowed" Communists who still felt keenly the pangs of identity and racism; who saw social revolution as a complement to this identity as Fidel Castro considered himself both Cuban patriot and Marxist-Leninist. Considering the resurgence of xenophobia and anti-Semitism in post-Communist "free Romania," we see the old demons with which Pauker wrestled a century ago were never truly exorcised but have proudly re-possessed the land. And the irony is compounded in that few stood up for the Romanian peasant more than Ana Pauker in the councils of her Party. Much as Jewish Marxist intellectuals in the US embraced the black Southern sharecropper as fellow outcast, Pauker upheld the Romanian peasant as the mudsill of the old system who had - like the Jews - everything to gain from a new order of things. That the Party hurt only itself by disregarding this grassroots potential was no fault of Pauker's, as Robert Levy shows. Yet even today (in reading certain reviewers below as well as Levy's interviews with some of her old "comrades") no Communist is more vilified in Romanian popular memory, because of her "foreignness": the very alienation that allowed her to identify with the other despised of old Romania. As a good "company person" she played along with the system she served, even at great personal cost. But in considering her background she had few other options. She was a founder of the Romanian Communist Party who had suffered torture and prison for the cause. She could not be intimidated by the backstabbing politics of the Comintern or the Kremlin, nor desert her Party in favor of a fashionable Zionism - even as she helped other Jews escape the poisonous anti-Semitic rot of her homeland, and was nearly devoured by it herself. Anti-Semitism was her true enemy, not Stalin: even if infected with it also, he conveniently died to spare her a final contradiction in her long, unfairly judged career as a Communist Jewish woman of her era and place.

Good insight as to the corruption and infiltration resulting the demise of a country

"Ana Pauker" is an excellent and compelling biography that blows old notions about East European communists out of the water. While hardly glossing over Ana Pauker's serious delusions and often cynical compromises, Robert Levy meticulously and convincingly demonstrates that Pauker was remarkably resistant to Soviet dictates during the most perilous years of Stalin's reign. This is a fascinating, well-written account based on recently unearthed communist archives and personal interviews of participants and eye-witnesses. Anyone interested in communist history or contemporary East European Jewish history will find this book utterly informative.

There have undoubtably been enough useful reviews of this book already written to enable anyone interested to form an accurate assessment of its contents. Some reviewers have rated it poorly because it was not the comprehensive CSS instruction book they expected. Perhaps they were misled, in part, by some of the five-star reviews that were a bit over-zealous in their praise of it as a book about CSS. With that in mind, I'm hoping another short review will help clear up some of these misunderstandings.First, the book is NOT a comprehensive treatment of (X)HTML or CSS. It is, however, perhaps the best book around about WHY web standards are important and how they can be utilized to produce semantic markup properly separated from presentational styling, improve code weight, increase accessibility, and deal with cross-browser incompatibilities. Toward this end, Zeldman uses enough good code examples to get his message across. Although it is true that a large portion of the book is dedicated to hard-core preaching about the value of modern standards, the included code is succinct and useful. In particular, his dissection of an actual well-designed website in the last chapter is a gold mine of valuable information.Zeldman has been at the forefront of the effort to evangelize web standards for many years. He and others (e.g., Cederholm, Marcotte, Moll, Budd, etc.) deserve much of the credit for informing designers about the advantages of standards-based design techniques and getting browser manufacturers to shift from their history of internecine warfare toward endorsing common standards. That has not been an easy task. I suggest that we should all cut Zeldman a little slack if he seems at times to be a bit too passionate. It has always required passion to kick money-lenders out of the temples! Finally, although this is not a primary text on HTML and CSS (of which there are many), it would undoubtably be of value for any aspiring website designer to have on the shelf next to the main text. I suggest this is especially true considering the recent "victory" of HTML5 over the (X)HTML path. In attempting to respond to the constraints of the real world, HTML5 allows much "sloppy" markup to survive. The need for better discipline in the world of website design will be with us for some time to come. Hopefully Zeldman's book will continue to steer designers in the right direction.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone in the web design field. A little basic HTML & CSS knowledge would be helpful, but you can do without. I've been designing websites for 4 years, trying to keep up with standards, and there is still much I learned from this book. It has changed the way I code.He provides very solid arguments why to design with standards; he outlines the benefits; he explains his reasoning to both designers & managers/CEOs. He doesn't tell you there is one way all sites should be designed. Rather, he explains the specifications they should meet, and why you should meet them. He provides several options/techniques on working with browser compatibility. If you're looking for a tutorial book that blows your mind with crazy-awesome techniques, look elsewhere. But if you're interested in an informative, research/fact-based book, with a personal writing style, that will transform the way you think about the web, help you create accessible, compatible sites for your clients, then you need to read this. And I sincerely hope you are interested.

More out of date than current at this point. Not really worth reading anymore.

Many of the examples are outdated. I'll admit I lost interest about 3/4 way through. Early sections are a very interesting read if you're looking for a history lesson on the evolution of the html spec and use of semantic html, but if you're just starting out and looking to learn some current best practices this book isn't skippable.

As used by Jeffrey Zeldman and co-author Ethan Marcotte in the third edition of Designing With Web Standards, the term "web standards" is a catchphrase that refers to writing web pages using, as a basis, a group of free and open technical specifications. The core specs being HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Think of them as the three legs of a tripod upon which all else rests. In no way futuristic, this has already happened. HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are at the heart of publishing in the 21st century. DWWS3 is largely about authoring with these and other related specs in smart and efficient ways that could, more simply and accurately, be labeled best practice. The first edition of DWWS in 2003 was in large part a work of advocacy. But six Internet years have passed and today it's mainstream. As I've labeled it on my blog, Readable Web - [...], the third edition is, simply, Required Reading.

Jeffrey Zeldman did it again. He made a huge impact with his Designing with Web Standards book (1st ed) close to a decade ago. Well, he's published his third edition, and it is as insightful as the first. This book is up to date, and covers modern technologies, from HTML5 to CSS3 to IE8.Readers of this book will gain a valuable insight into the recent history of web standards, be shown where things are now, and get a glimpse at where they may be going.Anyone connected to the web development process should read this book: developers (obviously), designers, supervisors. The book uses simple language, is not code-heavy, and is readable by programmers and non-programmers.

Developing with Web Standards and Designing with Web Standards immediately replaced most of the books of comparable material in my collection being so succinct and covering their respective materials excellently. Other books cover such specifics as CSS, html markup, design & layout, and typography on the web, but these two books set forth the direction the web is going in now and give us the roadmap for that journey as web developers and designers. Those who learn and follow these practices will create websites that work well on all platforms and browsers from the past, present and well into the future.

Technical, technical and technical. I'm glad I read it, but it's a tough read. It's a great text for learning the basics. You need to be committed to learning this stuff to get through it. I keep it on the shelf as a reference book but rarely use it.

Review

Title: Oregon's covered bridgesAuthor: Staff WriterPublisher: Book New, Inc.Date: February 2010About half of Oregon's 600 covered bridges remain. The co- founder of the Covered Bridge Society of Oregon presents a historic photographic tour of these wooden structures ― financed by tolls ― constructed from the mid-1850s to the 1950s in 14 counties from Benton to Yamhill. The cover photo of a girl selling cookies and worms during fishing season aptly illustrates the nostalgic appeal of these icons of the past. (Annotation ©2009 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Originally I read this in ebook format and loved it so much that I had to get a printed version to add to my library. Excellent condition and autographed by the author.

I have all the covered bridge books in this series that I can find. It represents so many that I will never see. Having been lost often to fire and arson but mostly to storm damage through flooding. Many are saved, nowadays, when bypassed: some left in place and others moved to parks where the wear and tear is not so damaging.

Happy with book

This book was not helpful to me as I wanted directions to find these bridges to see first hand and to take photo's of them.

Oregon used to have A LOT of covered bridges. Although a few still stand, most of them are gone, so this book is a fun photographic tour of what once was. In addition to seeing the cool historic photos, it's fun to read the stories and background on these bridges.Regarding a previous reviewer who complained that this book didn't provide directions to the covered bridges so he could take photos of them, I reiterate that most of the bridges in this book are not standing anymore.

From the Back Cover

THE RIVETING TALE OF A TRUE-LIFE CRIME-FIGHTING SCIENTIFIC SLEUTHWhen a skeleton is all that's left to tell the story of a crime, Mary Manhein, otherwise known as "the bone lady", is called in. For almost two decades, Manhein has used her expertise in forensic anthropology to help law enforcement agents -- locally, nationally, and internationally -- solve their most perplexing mysteries. In this eerie book she shares the extraordinary details of the often high-profile cases on which she works, and the science underlying her analyses. Here are the fascinating details of how, from a pile of bones, she assesses age, sex, race, signs of trauma, and time of death, and how she can even use clay to re-create a face.Written with the compassion and humor of a born storyteller, The Bone Lady is an unforgettable glimpse into the lab where one scientist works to reveal the human stories behind the remains.

I was looking forward to reading this book, especially what a forensic anthropologist does and how it assisted in solving identification. However, I was somewhat disappointed as the author's book was a cursory overview of her life and did not go into great detail how she got into this career path, more examples of what she actually does, how her work is done, etc.

"The Bone Lady - (Life as a Forensic Anthropologist)" by Mary H. Manhein, ISBN 01402.9192X (pbk), Penguin Books 2000, is a 137 page curiously enticing story-telling recount of Manhein's personal encounter and infatuation with college anthropology which led her to become a working forensic bioanthropologist and Director of Forensic Anthropology and Computer Enhancement Services Laboratory (FACES), forensics instructor (LSU), and deputy coroner.A gifted story teller, she provides an articulate recital of her childhood, then marriage, and finally 'matriculating' at age 33; and she then delves into a dozen or so intriguing cases where she is asked to help provide identification of remains, often just bones and thus she acquires rank as 'The Bone Lady,' and later fellowhip distinction (FAAFS). The medley of cases provide some modicum about similariy of mammalian bones, grave sites, viewing windows in cast-iron coffins, insights into aging of bone, and differentiation of male vs. female remains. The book yields the "feeling" of field forensics by touching on the politics, stenches, miseries, hazards, grief, closure, and those too few triumphs unearthed by 'The Bone Lady." It is well written and easy to read and priced just right.

Let me start this review by informing the you that I am an Anthropology student, so I am slightly biased towards the subject of the text. In a way this is good for the book and in a way it isn't. It is good, because no matter the negatives of the author or text I am going to like it since I love reading about the cases and how the investigator got to the conclusion they reached. Unfortunately I am also more knowledgeable on the topic then the average joe. With that being said...After reading Ms. Manhein's book I am very disappointed, upon purchasing the text I was looking forward to learning something new that only someone in the field could teach me, but after the first few chapters, I found her writing simplistic and her chapters short. I do not know if the author was attempting to dumb down her writing for the masses or if she just didn't have much to write. But her book leaves much to be desired. For someone who is a novice in the field, an avid Bones watcher who just finds this fascinating and needs to have things like "skull" and "cranium" defined individually then this is perfect for them. She tends to blend her stories with the science seamlessly and while I there may have not been enough science for my tastes I cannot deny that that makes the book an easy read.If you are looking for a little to no-fluff book that describes the situation and science with little conjecture, this is not for you. I would suggest another text titled, Dead Men Do Tell Tales by Dr. Maples.

I'm one of the fortunate folks that has had a chance to work with Mary over the years. Anyone remotely interested in how forensic anthropology assists law enforcement and the loved ones of a "lost" person will love this book. The work that Mary and others have done with the LSU F.A.C.E.S lab is nothing short of amazing. Buy the book, read it, and share it with others.

I got hooked on forensic anthropology when I read "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" when I was 13 and I bought this book as a recomendation by Amazon. It was a good book, written about Mary Manhein's personal experiance in the field, but lacking technical perspective. I enjoyed the book as a look from a Anthropologist's perspective, but I was disapointed by the way the book presented the field, as if only written more as a short record of cases rather than an informative record. It wasnt very well written and rather dry reading. Over all I wouldnt recomend this because there are way to many good books out there that contain informative material that is well written. Dont get me wrong, I did like the book, to a degree, but I love to read and it was a short book that didnt take long to finish, so I am not regreting the perchase, but it is not the ideal book for someone that has not read anything else from the field... it may sour you from buying another book on the topic. I would start with "Dead Men Do Tell Tales" and then read this if you're still interested...

I enjoyed reading her book for facts, but also for hearing her voice. I was blessed to get to meet her in person and truly loved how life comes alive around her. She works with death as she helps find completion for those who have lost a loved one. She helps police discover the truth on how who died and how they lost their life. Ms. Manhein also writes fiction. The third book in the non fiction series, just released. Check out all of her books. You won't be disappointed.

The subject is fascinating and the writing is fine. My issue with this book is that all of the stories are too short to really engage. Just as one begins to get interested, the story ends. Also, a lot of the stories don't have much content (hence, the shortness), and some don't have a resolution. The diagrams, also, could have been better and better labeled; for example, in comparing a male and female pelvis, it would be helpful if the parts mentioned in the caption were labelled on the drawing. Great subject, not great execution.

My only complaint about the Bone Lady is that it was way too short. I think Ms. Manhein could have given us more information and more cases than she did. I know I certainly could have read a lot more. Again, here is a scientist who luckily doesn't write like a scientist...meaning dry, big words, and boring. This author knows how to explain with humor a topic which really is a difficult topic to deal with. Reading her book made me wish sometimes I hadn't decided to go into neuroscience and science education for the Deaf! Karen L. Sadler, Science education, University of Pittsburgh, klsst23@pitt.edu

In/Sight: African Photographers, 1940 to the Present

From Library Journal

This survey of African photographers accompanies an exhibit of the same name at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The production quality is excellent, as is the selection of photographs (from museums, archives, and private collections). Each of 30 African photographers (some of them Afrikaners and other Caucasians) from many religions and nationalities are represented by a small sampling of his of her diverse output, only hinting at the work being done in Africa during the last half of this century. The images date from the struggles for independence to the present postcolonial period. Largely concerned with Western and African perceptions of Africa and the emergence of a modern (and more Westernized) self-image, the footnoted essays do not attempt a full history of African photography but discuss such subjects as photographic ethnography, reality and representation, propaganda and truth, and the effects of technological advances on the creation of visual imagery of a continent. This book will find a warm welcome among interested lay readers and scholars alike. Recommended for photohistory, ethnographic, and African history collections.?Kathleen Collins, New York Transit Museum Archives, BrooklynCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.
