Great technical asset, must have for technical library

Goldstein et al have written a book that serves as an excellent introduction to the SEM, and is also a formidable reference. When I took SEM at NC State University, it was taught from this book. Between our professor and this text, I learned the ins and outs of the SEM, and I keep the book within arms reach whenever I'm at work.Goldstein covers everything from the basics of operation, through image formation, sample prep, usage in particular fields of study -- everything!If you get one SEM book, get this one.

This was an excellent book (5 stars) but has been superseded by the 3rd edition. Buy it only for historical interest.

This is an excellent textbook for graduate students majoring in Materials Science. The text is easy to read, and accompanied by plenty of photographs and schematics, is easy to understand. Covers almost every aspect of SEM and X-ray micro-analysis e.g. underlying science, technology, and practical use. Each chapter begins at a basic level and gradually develops the subject to intricate detail, and depending on the level of study one may skip chapters or part of a chapter.

This book, although not the newest textbook on the market, is THE textbook to have if you are looking for the history, theory or applications of electron microscopy and x-ray microanalysis. Well written, thorough and packed full of well-designed diagrams illustrating the principles described. I've used this textbook in classroom and laboratory settings with excellent results. Looking forward to the next edition!

It was a privilege to learn the subjects of SEM and TEM from the the author of this book himself (David Joy). This is an excellent book which starts from the basics and it depends on the researcher how deep he wanna go. The book provides in depth analysis as well if required. Great resource book.

Oh my, don't miss out on ANY of Jane's Furry Logic books. I sent one to a 16 yr. old friend who had a concussion and has been out of regular school for 6 mos. This book is charming & funny on every level. Jane Seabrook is an amazing artist who manages to depict the animals accurately while putting great expression on their faces to go with her witty captions. As an added bonus, she identifies each animal in the back of the book. I have several of these little books & love looking at them over & over. She did one using cats & I wish she'd do one for dogs! These books by Jane Seabrook are simply marvelous. I have enjoyed them so much that I've gone back and ordered more to have on hand to give to friends on special occasions. The first book of hers that I'd gotten was Furry Logic: Little Challenges. Even more fantastic. Really "spoke to me".

With a picture and just a few words the author manages to convey some of our deepest thoughts and feelings. Not a children's book despite charming covers but children would probably enjoy and "get it" too.

I bought a new Power air fryer but I don't really understand the manual because it was not written in English so I had to first translate the write ups. The stress made me almost condemn the air fryer. But thank God for this Vegan and Vegetarian air fryer cookbook. It is not just a cookbook for me. I also see it as an air fryer oven manual. Thanks to the author. He really saved me from the great stress!

The special seasons air fryer recipes are the best. I don't only cook them on special occasions, I cook them even in ordinary seasons because my husband will always want me to repeat some of the meals. I think he now shows me more love these days. Thank you Renee for helping me win my hubby's love again with your cookbook!

I felt reluctant in buying this cookbook but thank God I finally bought it. Although it does not have many recipe images but the recipe steps were simple to follow. My last son Kelly will always go through the recipes and pick the ones he loves and they tasted great!

He takes care to present multiple viewpoints with nuance, leaving the reader to think for herself about which argument and use of evidence seems most convincing.Th reason I consider this book compassionate is that Brown manages to capture the raw yearning for meaning and spirituality among humans of all heritages without sacrificing intellectual honesty or academic rigor. The questions in this regard which he poses are not uncritically sympathetic to his own identification with Islam, but instead highlight the human civilization's search for meaning and our cumulative efforts to collect, categorize, standardize and neatly package Truth as tradition.I can't believe I waited so long to read this book!

But in reality the people who read them are still subject to (mis)interpretation, are prone to errors and human emotions like greed and envy, or can have their own hidden agendas using religious doctrines. This book is about that human fallability.The book shows the complex intellectual and spiritual debates on the interpretation of Al Quran, and how complicated and political the writings of the Hadiths are. It shows that Islam is where it is today not only through the conquerings and assimilations, but also as a result of many theological frictions occurring for the past 1400 years.The central message of this book is very straight to the point: we need to read Al Quran wholly, from cover to cover (or Khatam). Reading only some verses of Al Quran or just bits and pieces would take the verses out of context, and thus their individual messages could be highly misleading - the major problem the world has always had since the 600s, especially today.Chapter 3 was spot on in highlighting this point. The author, Jonathan A.C. Brown, shows the infalibility of the work of Shakespeare, the Bibble, even Homer's Illiad and Odyssey, where each one of them have obvious flaws but were overlooked. So why should we intellectually scrutinise the blank spots of the Quran? The point of this chapter is, if we read the texts separately it will indeed produce oddities and flaws (or blank spots), but if we read them wholly the big picture will make sense in the end, just like the work of Shakespeare and Homer.Moreover, it seems like everything are being discussed by his book. Everything, including controversial topics like the Hadith about masturbation, the long debate about who is entitled for zakat, and the relevancy of Quranic verses and Hadiths in modern time. The fact that so many briliant scholars debating so many specific aspects of the Quran and Hadiths - as analysed extensively in the book - it humbles me, and show how small I am in the presence of the many experts, and how little I know about my own Holy Book and the sayings of my Prophet. With so much wealth of hard truths and brilliant reasonings this book is a must-read for every Muslims.

I'm a Muslim American woman, and I have read a number of books and essays about various parts of Islamic history. But, I've always been left with a fragmented sense of the history of Islamic thought. This book does an excellent job creating a narrative and progression, tying all the different pieces together, in an easy accessible manner. I am still in the middle of reading it, but I'm finding I can't put it down.

For most westerners, "Sharia" means nothing but cutting off the hands of thieves. However, the ad hoc barbarities given the name of Sharia by ISIS and the Taliban bear very little resemblance to this rich and complex tradition. Brown shows that this tradition deserves respect as well as critique, and why Muhammad is portrayed as one of civilization's great lawmakers on the upper Freize of the US supreme court building. This is a rich living tradition that was never afraid to reexamine and re-invent itself during Islam's golden age, and Brown shows that such re-invention is the key for a vital Islam in todays world.

This is a straight-talking practical guide to getting a little dough through small claims court. The book is well-written, explanatory, and through. Read it before you miss that first house payment if you can, before you respond to the foreclosure papers, before you walk into court or even after you've been to court and lost. You still will gain some perspective on your situation if nothing else. I wish I would have read it much sooner but it was still very helpful. Thank you Alan Sims. The general public would have been better off following the essence of this book rather than the government holding up these stupid modifications that, if you could get one, only made the banks more money and cost the homeowners valuable time they could have better spent revamping their lives.

Let’s focus on what I think is the most significant part of the Star Diaries collection: the 21st voyage. Clearly, this is Lem’s Summa Theologica for a technological age. First, we have to be clear. This is not a traditional “science vs. theology” conflict. There is no such conflict. The idea that science and faith are diametrically opposed is, as Brian Fellows (aka Tracy Morgan) says: IT’S JUST CRAZY. And second, Lem is just plain funny.Set aside the multiplicity of definitions of religion and religiosity and settle on this. Religious thought is the logical process of reasoning in light of an incomplete informational data set. Let’s lay aside Godel’s theorem and all the other information theoretic constructs were familiar with. There are just some things we just don’t know. What’s human consciousness? What is the source of our feeling of self-awareness or just plain self? Why is there an apparent order to the universe? Why can’t there be just plain nothing – the most-symmetric state!So there’s no conflict between religious and scientific thought. They just cover different domains. But technology throws a whole bunch of new stuff into the mix. For example, many church dogma hold that an immortal “soul” (whatever that is) is engendered at conception. Well, suppose you could “reverse generate” a being – take it from its adult form back to a sperm and egg pair and then return those two parts to their original separate states. Where did the “immortal soul” go?But there are two basic boundary conditions in all this: whatever we come up with, it can’t violate our basic perception of the universe (a rose is a rose is a rose…) and it can’t be contradictory. So either the soul (if there is a soul) is immortal, or it isn’t!In the voyage in question, Lem’s hero – Ijon Tichy ( I, John Cheeky) – lands on a distant planet and encounters a group called “ the Demolition Friars.” This is a religious sect whose members are robots. Turns out that for a while, many years in the planets past, there were arguments and violent out-breaks over religious belief. And every time one side looked like it was winning, some technological advance would give the advantage to the other. This is just like the issue of the immortal soul in light of “reverse generation.”So the planet’s inhabitants thought these problems were just so complex and the answers so, ultimately, trivial that they handed them over to machines (such as the Demolition Friars.) The friars realized that the problem, at its base, was not solvable. But also, they realized, that based on the construct of physical beings, chemical (or other physical manipulations) were always possible. You could take a pill that would make you a devout catholic or another pill that would make you an atheist.And in the end, the Friars came up with the ultimate “faith bomb.” A procedure so powerful (chemical, surgical, verbal, whatever) that its recipient would “believe.” They would see the internal logic of the universe, realize without doubt, the spiritual nature of the universe, the immortality of the soul, the existence of God (whatever that is) and see into the ultimate mystery with perfect clarity. And, what’s more, the process would be irreversible. It couldn’t be undone - once a believer, always a believer. WOW!But the friars refused to pull the trigger. They would not deploy their “best shot.” They, themselves, would remain to “sit among fossilized rats in this maze of dried up sewers.” But they would not deprive their fellow beings freedom of choice… whatever that is.What an incredible story! This is clearly the best “theology” to come out of the last 2000 years.

Lem is one of the most original, creative, wickedly funny, irresistibly charming storytellers ever to grace science fiction. The Star Diaries was rightly considered to be an instant classic and it has stood the test of time. I have read a lot of sci-fi in my life, and I consider this to be one of my all-time favorites. Nobody does it like Lem does it, and nobody who purchases this book will be disappointed when they read it. If I had to pick a short list of books to take along with me to a desert island, this book would certainly be among them.

If you liked Douglas Adams, "Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy" you know there are not many science fiction writers who work for laughs.Stanislaw Lem spoofs society and science fiction alike. He finds humor in philosophy, sociology, computer science, bureaucracy, historians. cosmology, astronauts, scientists, an so much more. I owned this book years ago and just had to have a copy for my Kindle.

If Borges had written "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," it might have resembled "The Star Diaries." Not really a novel, this hit-and-miss collection (mostly hits) features randomly ordered and thematically unlinked space journeys by Ijon Tichy, who also stars in the far more accessible "Futorological Congress." Even though it's not a long book, "The Star Diaries" is best enjoyed in small doses. Some of the more lighthearted tales resemble the best Monty Python skits (and are just as hysterical). In the Seventh Voyage, for example, Tichy gets caught in time loops which causes multiple versions of himself to encounter one another. "That Friday me by now was the Saturday me and perhaps was suddenly knocking about somewhere in the vicinity of Sunday, while this Friday me inside the spacesuit had only recently been the Thursday me, into which same Thursday me I myself had been transformed at midnight." By the end of the chapter, the spaceship is so crowded with Ijon Tichys that they can barely move around. Other stories tend more towards historical parody or philosophical commentary. The allusions run so fast and thick that these (particularly the Twentieth and Twenty-First Voyages) pay rereading, and even then I found myself puzzling over some of the references. The themes and plots of these tales most resemble Borges's cabalistic fables (it would be interesting to know if Borges was an influence) and, although they are absorbing in their own right, I don't think Lem's stories are as rewarding as Borges's fiction--but then again, Borges doesn?t demand as much of his reader. Science fiction aficionados looking for another "Solaris" (or even another "Futurological Congress") might be disappointed by this volume--but ultimately it will depend on your taste in cerebral humor. Instead of straightforward narrative or easily imagined characters, Lem has fashioned farcical sketches and intellectual brainteasers that are both challenging and humorous.

This book has held a spot in my top ten favorite sci-fi books ever since I first read it as a teenager. I was amazed by the divergent thinking Lem uses in his wide variety of space tales. One of my favorites now (although it was too disturbing when I was younger) is the story of the computer/robot monastery, on a planet where every doctrine had been stripped away by scientific discoveries. The monks' reaction to this situation is described so poignantly that even Tichy is humbled. At the other end of the spectrum is the slapstick humor when Tichy enters the time vortexes and finds himself multiplied. I consider this Lem's finest work and I'm so glad it was translated into English!

these stories are both simple & amazingly creative, they are quite different from Solaris, but Just as silly, which both films terribly neglected!
