Very informative and well-written book. As an educator, I would highly recommend this book to other educators to use as quality reading material for high school students and above. The Microsoft Trial chapter was especially well-written. Dr. Becraft breaks down complex legal terms in a way that students can understand and he provides a historical context for the court cases. Very engaging reading for both high school students and adults alike.

I will never buy a Kindle book at such an inflated price.

I saw this gorgeous cover and the synopsis and was really excited to request this book for Fall reading ... sadly I was disappointed and I could not finish it.If you don't know, Art Boss is actually a follow up novel to Piper Perish, another book by this author. I didn't realize this until I started writing this review and doing some more research, so that may have been the biggest and first flaw. I found the main character to be pretty flat, I didn't really click with her and I didn't feel the need to keep reading about her experiences. I also felt like I was missing a lot of information.Since I had no idea that this was a sequel, I didn't know about Piper or her artwork, so when the author jumps right in talking about art pieces she assumes that I know which ones she is talking about (I am guess that was in the first book), but I had no clue and immediately felt lost. I was thinking that it was being kept secretive for a reason, but then the character starts to reproduce them and then I got more information but the full one never came. I made it through a quarter of the book before I gave up, between the lack of information that I felt like I needed, and my lack of connection to the main character I just had to put it down.I was also feeling some strong anxiety about what was to come in the plot, and while that is normally a good thing for a book to do, since I was not enthralled with the book itself, I felt like I was riling myself up for nothing.I always feel bad about not finishing a book, but this one just was not for me, maybe if you have read Piper Perish and really enjoyed it this would be a good one for you, either way, I would suggest reading that book first so you have more context if you pick this one up.

Piper Perish has arrived in New York City from Houston a fresh-eyed budding artist under contract to a fashion designer and modern artist who wants her to create seven copies of a piece of her work he saw on the Internet. It has been a dream of hers to move to NYC and become the artist she knows she is destined to be. At first, the City is as entrancing as she dreamed it to be. Then her work for the artist begins in earnest and her own art takes a back seat to her duties as one of his assistants.This is Cagan’s second book. It’s an outstanding read. Piper Perish is a believable character who tells her story in the form of journal entries over the course of her first couple of months after her arrival in NYC. The writing is excellent and Piper is a believable character. This is a book for readers of any age.

Art Boss is a love letter to NYC. This book is definitely a continuation of the first book as it jumps right into the next journal entry of Piper Perish arriving in NYC. The first chapter references Enzo, Kit, and Piper's sister but without much backstory. The book is vibrant with art, being young, finding yourself and making a difference in the world. Piper makes great friends, has some ups and downs, and figures out a way to make a buck in order to stay in New York. I can see this becoming a trilogy.

The novel will appeal to millennials especially those interested in the New York City art world. A young woman (Piper) becomes an intern for a hot shot fashion designer. Her art will be a backdrop to his shows. As time passes she becomes discontented with her situation and decides to venture out on her own. Of course, there is a love interest and at times the book seems much more about her relationships than about her art. Not my cup of tea.

The idea of this book really appealed to me but I had a lot of issues getting into this story. I just couldn't connect with the characters or the plot. It could be a it's not you, its me thing with this story. I think a lot of people will really love it.

I loved Piper Perish and this book is a wonderful second trip into her head and world. The only other thing I want is to see Piper's art out in the real world. Kayla's descriptions of the pieces are so evocative, I want to see them for myself!

I loved this book! It's funny, sweet, and relatable to anyone who has ever been (or currently is) a teenager.

I didn’t want this book to end! I loved Piper’s enthusiasm and I felt like I was right there with her on artistic adventures. I think I loved Art Boss even more than the first book! ❤️

I was surprised by this book in the best of ways. I expected an interesting but ordinary legal nonfiction book along the lines of a mediocre text that rhymes with Schmuffalo Creek. As a law student, I was already deeply familiar with the Windsor case in terms of both its factual history and its legal outcome, so I wasn't sure how much this book would really offer me in terms of new information.I should have known better. Even someone who is totally unfamiliar with or uninterested in constitutional law will find something valuable in this book. Kaplan intertwines her personal journey from closeted law student to one of the legends of gay rights in the United States with Edie Windsor's fascinating life story as a gay computer programmer who became engaged to her spouse, Thea Spyer, in 1967 — over a decade before New York held its sodomy statute unconstitutional. Both stories are deeply moving, personal, and compelling even to a casual reader. I think it's rare for this kind of text to feel so honest, but I'm glad it is. I think there is a place for dispassionate analysis in law, but it is far from the only valuable trait in a writer or a lawyer. This is an exciting, emotional read, and I felt gripped with anticipation even though I knew how everything would turn out. Importantly, also, this is a funny book. There are parts I actually giggled out loud, which is rare for me even in reading fiction.Kaplan also discusses really interesting strategy choices as a litigator and civil rights advocate. This book raises a lot of issues around the politics of civil rights litigation and managing tensions, even within and among groups that have the same goals, and also has a lot of fascinating things to say about succeeding in our federal court system. Professors who teach advocacy or public interest classes might want to look into assigning this book as a good primer on and overview of successful advocacy in a civil rights context.

First, let me say that YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK. It is good. It is human. It is not overly legalistic. It shows the real human emotions around these historic events in the LGBT struggle for our rights. BUT, if you buy the book hoping to learn more about Edie Windsor, you will be disappointed. Yes, you will learn the basic facts of Edie and Thea. BUT THIS BOOK IS ACTUALLY ABOUT Ms. Kaplan. Roberta is, herself, an amazing human and lawyer. Why do I say this? Compare it to "Love Wins" that was co-authored by Jim Obergefell. In that book, when there was a win or a setback, you got to learn of Jim's emotions & reactions. In THIS book, you (almost) never hear what Edie feels. You get Roberta's feelings. They are good. They make the legal decisions human ... but they are Roberta's feelings, not Edie's. Now I feel like I know Roberta. I wanted to know Edie. BUT STILL, I learned to enjoyed getting to know Roberta.

This was a fascinating book, not only for the autobiographical details of the author's life, but for the legal and Constitutional rights of the woman bringing the suit (Edie Windsor), as well. I was greatly impressed by the tremendous amount of legal work and writing that were involved in this case. My late husband was a lawyer, so I knew a little bit about the way lawyers work, but this was most impressive. After I finished the book, I felt as if I'd worked on the case myself. Ms. Windsor sounded like a wonderful woman: her love for her spouse and her years of devoted care were very moving indeed, as was the fact that she was not well herself, suffering as she did from severe heart trouble. She and Ms. Kaplan were heroic in their efforts and triumphed in the end. I think that Ms. Kaplan is brilliant, and compassionate, too: an important combination for a great lawyer! Thank goodness they made sure that all people have their civil rights! I couldn't put it down.

This is a brilliant, full-hearted, first-hand story from one of the key players in the successful fight for marriage equality in the United States by Roberta "Robbie" Kaplan. Ms Kaplan is the attorney who successfully argued the historic Windsor vs. U.S. case before the Supreme Court, overturning the misnamed Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was subsequently cited in the swift repeal of most of the state anti-LGBT laws prohibiting same-sex couples from marrying. Despite knowing the eventual outcome, the book is still a gripping and fast-paced read, and gives a fascinating look at the insider debates and strategies that resulted in this key victory for LGBT right on a federal level. Despite the significance of the case, the legal complexities and historic impact of Windsor are translated into a compelling and easy to understand narrative that is accessible to a layperson. I own and have followed the Convict Conditioning series. I wish I knew about this book before I bought those. Don't get me wrong the Convict Conditioning (Con-Con) series is very good and I would still have bought them but I think Complete Calisthenics is a better book. I currently have tailored my own program from this book with some ideas from Con-Con 1 & 2.Kalym's Fundamental Five (F5), his starter program if you will, is well thought out. Any beginner should be able to achieve the F5 requirements in a reasonable number of months with the exception of the 10 pull-ups which will probably be the sticking point for some. That's not a flaw with the program but rather highlights two issues that are common with many. Too many of us are too heavy and too sedentary. Our pulling muscles are weak from disuse and it's hard to hit a decent number of pull-ups with a spare tire acting as a anchor.I believe hitting the F5 requirements is a reasonable foundation. His second and third programs are well thought out in my opinion. The second program uses some harder exercise variations to build greater strength and introduces handstands. Perhaps this is why some people are calling this book intermediate to advanced but remember you don't start here, you earn your way here by nailing the F5. The third program further develops handstands and introduces levers and this is getting into advanced territory for most.In my opinion this is a no nonsense, no hype book with a very good treatment of a large selection of body weight exercises and reasonable programming. The book lays out a plan to go as far as you want to go with calisthenics.

I've been following the "Convict Conditioning" plan since 2012 with excellent results. But I've been trying to include more gymnastics style training into my routine (Planche, Levers, Human Flag, etc). I read the description and the reviews and decided to give it a shot. I am VERY glad I did. This is exactly what I've been looking for. It has similar progression information to Convict Conditioning, but for more exercises. It covers Planche, Levers, and Human Flags along with many others. It gave great information about building strength in the scapula which will improve overall strength and stability.The book is well written with plenty of pictures showing how to complete each movement.The nutrition section is brief and basic, but I didn't purchase it for nutritional advice.I've only had the book for 2 days and I'm already incorporating new exercises described in the book into my routine.Thank you Ashley Kalym for the great book! I will post back in a year with my results.10/7/2014 Update: I have begun to incorporate the static holds into my routine and I am already feeling a major difference in my upper body strength. The post workout (next day) muscle soreness feels different then when I am doing my standard repetition work. I am very much enjoying these new static hold exercises.12/1/2015 Update: L-Sits, Planche, Front Levers & Back Levers have all been incorporated into my regular routine rotation. I now have a set of rings and I built a set of PVC pipe parallettes. I achieved my first back lever (held for 8 seconds) on a bar about a month ago. I can hold good clean L-Sit for 15 seconds on the rings. I am working on the panche (on the rings and parallettes) and front levers (on a bar), but I'm still a long way off from doing those. I also regularly work on ring muscle ups (haven't got these yet) and human flags (I mastered the clutch flag a long time ago). This is a great book and I have recommended it to many people.

The book covers the basic moves like push-up, pull-up and squat and the advanced variations like single leg squat. It also covers the levers: front levers, back levers, half levers, human flags and planche. For every move there is clear steps and nice clear photos explaining how to do them. One great thing about this book is that it has a feasible progression plan. For difficult move like front lever, you start with the tucked version and gradually make progress on the next version.I have read a few body weight exercise books: "You are your own gym", "Convict conditioning", "Convict conditioning 2", "Raising the bar" and "Pushing the limits". This book is by far the best book I have ever read on the topic.
