One of the most famous of all religious texts, The Bhagavad Gita has been inspiring people to live meaningful lives for over two thousand years. This particular translation makes the profound (and still revolutionary!) ideas truly accessible for modern people. You have to concentrate and want to understand divinity and the greater, mysterious truths underlying life. I enjoy reading a few paragraphs a day and mulling them over. Even though I've read different versions of The Bhagavad Gita dozens of times over the last fifty years, it still feels good and necessary to reflect again on the teachings. At first, when I read this as a college student, I agreed with Arjuna at the beginning of the story (when he was shaking and confused!) that war is wrong; of course we shouldn't attack and kill anybody, much less old friends and family members. Krishna's teachings evaporated for me at that time. I simply didn't recall them after I finished my religion course. Much later I understood how war is a metaphor for simply taking action, and that Krishna was encouraging Arjuna to carry on with his duties and understand that most of this world is an illusion. He tells Arjuna that even as a mighty warrior, he cannot actually kill anyone, since the spirit is eternal. This and the other teachings in this slim volume bring a deep contentment. My sincere gratitude to the author for this translation.
This is an excellent book.Hawley does a superb job writing the text in meaningful English prose for a modern audience. Unlike most versions of the Gita in which poetics or literalness are emphasized in the translation, Hawley conveys the meaning and gets most all of it right with a level of understanding few other translators exhibit.He is clearly writing from an Advaita perspective. He is a follower of the late Sai Baba. The text is skewed in places as a result of those affiliations but all text in every translation of the Gita that has ever been made has been skewed intentionally or not by the translators' own structure of understanding. I found the distortions to be far less important than the degree to which he got it right.I teach a class on the Gita once a year. Hawley's text has become my source manual for the class.
This book is an easy interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita. It is easy to follow, understand and is definitely written for the Westerner in mind. I never came across anything like this before, so having the words and their translations in the text was extremely helpful. It's set up into chapters and subchapters so it is easy to set the book down with a book mark and to remember where you left off. I was able to read the whole book within a week or so. I would recommend reading it in parts instead of sitting and reading it whole only because there is a lot of information to dwell and think on before going to the next chapter. Well done Jack Hawley.

This was very easy to understand for me. My husband already knew the basics and had a very complex translation and commentary on the Gita and it was too hard for me to understand. This however was able to open my eyes to certain "truths" contained within the Gita.Excellent.

If you want to understand God and how to worship him/her, then this Is the book I would read! No wonder Gandhi carried a copy with him. It’s better then any religious book (bible, etc.) to help me understand who God is, and what he wants us to become! I found myself using my yellow highlighter to underline extremely important information on how to live a God centered life! This will become my go to book from now on! Like the Bible - you need to keep reading it over and over again to remind you of who and what we can become before God! Gandhi GOT IT! What a masterpiece!
